Oh! Something interesting!
Channel Four say it's been 405 minutes since last goal from open play. Another feather in Southgate's cap.

Some of the so called fouls in this game are embarrassing! It’s almost as though international football has become like netball with a constant barrage of the refs whistle stopping the game dead It’s bloody awful to watch!!
Re: Italy v England
Agree! I would rather watch local non-league footy than this garbageIm_not_Robbie_Blake wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 8:44 pmWatching Burnley is FFFFAAAARRRR better than watching matches like this.

Re: Italy v England
Pitch side commentators saying england have played well in the first half… disqualifies them from ever being allowed to commentate again. If you cant assess a game truly and put forward rational thoughts on the game… you should not be allowed to commentate

A couple of confidence boosters against Malta and Lichtenstein will do us good.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 7:17 pmPretty straightforward really, Pickford injured.
Don't we get relegated, from whatever this is, if we lose tonight?

Can't believe that James took that free kick. Normally Kane doesn't let anybody near a shooting chance from that range.

Watching England play like this and knowing I’d rather be watching Burnley this season is evidence relegation need not be a bad thing for us fans.
Caveat - Burnley wouldn’t be able to play this way without the parachute payments.

Re: Italy v England
When he was Boro manager he was in the bar at the Radisson in Liverpool - they were playing Everton the following day.
Anyway, someone had been sent off on the MOTD game and Mr Southgate asked me if it was a straight red or two yellows ( it mattered as if it was a 3 game ban the player would miss the game against Boro)
I thought it was endearing that he literally relied on the testament of a bloke in the pub.
We had a good chat to be honest and he really is a likeable good bloke.

He’s a knob who should concentrate on actually trying to make us capable of scoring.

Re: Italy v England
He’s a man promoted outside of his capabilities , happens in many professions. May well be a lovely chap. But in terms of being equipped to manage and motivate a team. He fails miserably. For those who say he’s got us to semi’s and finals, i believe that has been more by luck than guile. And when we have needed that guile its lacking he does not tactically know how to change a game. I think with this squad venables as an example would have won a trophy or two, even hoddle would do better,
I mention venables and huddle as examples of men who were tactically competent

I think it’s the frustration of how much attacking talent we have, yet the football is so dull. Two keepers on the bench here and no Toney in the squad. People dread international breaks as England are just never a good watch. This is almost Italy’s B team and our first 11 have barely had a shot.

Re: Italy v England
Another farcical VAR rule. Clear foul and possible yellow but because it isn’t in the penalty area or a red card the VAR just go with the original decision. Even though if the ref saw it again he would give the foul.

Re: Italy v England
If you accredit major semi-final and final appearances as luck then you’ve already lost the argument. If we’d have won that final you no doubt would also be claiming he was lucky. Strangely not many people say that Ramsay was lucky.Goalposts wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 9:05 pmHe’s a man promoted outside of his capabilities , happens in many professions. May well be a lovely chap. Re: Italy v England
Bellingham is class, full of attacking intent.
Southgate should be able to coach that out of him before the World Cup.
Feel sorry for Saka.

Lots of attacking talent yet a weak defence - something has to give…and it just has.RVclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 9:06 pmI think it’s the frustration of how much attacking talent we have, yet the football is so dull. Southgate will go for damage limitation now, such is his philosophy on attacking football.

Still only one comically weak shot on goal.

Re: Italy v England
My problem with Southgate illustrated right here.
No creativity, no guile, no penetration - crying out for a player like Grealish whilst the game is 0-0 to get out there and try and change it up and go for the win.
No prospect of that sub happening.
We go 1-0 down - “…Get Jack stripped off”

Re: Italy v England
Pope’s distribution is quite poor to say the least.
Re: Italy v England
In the last tournament with home advantage and with a kind draw Southgate somehow managed to lose the final through inept mangement. RamsEy won the World Cup.
Re: Italy v England
Lost count the amount of times Pope has shanked it, really poor performance all round.

Grealish Foden and Sterling up front now. Three (ex) club mates knowing how to play together makes a big difference IMO

Mate, first comment all game and it’s slagging Pope off. Do you realise how boring you are?

What’s the point of calling Toney up and then not putting him on the bench?

Re: Italy v England
Well if you think that not scoring in open play for over 440 mins the worst performance for over 20 years, by any england side . is the plan of a master strategist and someone who understands the game and how to change it.. i rest my case

To be fair, my first comment was also slagging off Pope. He has been poor. Fortunately he no longer plays for us!Winstonswhite wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 9:25 pmMate, first comment all game and it’s slagging Pope off. Do you realise how boring you are?

That’s a poor way to rest your case, but thanks for doing so.
Re: Italy v England
Why has he only brought 2 subs on? The man is an idiot.
Re: Italy v England
The chinks in his managerial armour are starting to show, unfortunately.

Re: Italy v England
We've created a single half chance in all the game.
Think of all the creative and flair players at Southgate's disposal and that is the net result. One single half chance created all game long, against essentially an Italian reserve side.

Re: Italy v England
Dont usually express my opinion on this board, but that performance was diabolical. Time for a change in management
Re: Italy v England
Player for player, bar the odd one, we should be better than Italy here. You point to the defence yet he has a Serie A winning defender on the bench (on his home ground) so it can’t be that weak?Rileybobs wrote: ↑Fri Sep 23, 2022 9:11 pmLots of attacking talent yet a weak defence - something has to give…and it just has.

Kane or Scammaca? The latter can’t even get into West Ham’s first 11. Foden, Walker, Stones and Grealish all regulars in one of the PL’s best ever teams (+ Sterling prior to this season). James scores / assists every other week for Chelsea? Bellingham is bossing Champs League games at 19.
The attacking play is constantly poor and this game isn’t an outlier. We struggle to create quality chances against any decent team we face.
