Plymouth 0 Burnley 0

Cotteril one

Drove all the way down, and drove all the way back

Still, at least I've done it now and don't need to contemplate ever doing it again
I was there that day. Awful game. My vote goes to 1st April 2001

I think Watford at home last season was poor.
Some cup finals and internationals are just as bad though.
That was the straw that broke the camels back for me with SD

The 4 nil defeat at West Brom under Dyche always sticks in my mind. The one where Stephen Reid played in centre mid, Juke upfront on his own. Can remember hearing the team news in the car and wanting to turn around and go home.

I think I've actually attended 90/95% of these games. More reason to enjoy the good times.
Remember going up to Newcastle visiting in-laws in Feb 75?. Think we were near the top of the league and went down 3-0. Appalling performance.

Plenty of bad ones but in 1999 Burnley 0 Gillingham 5 followed by Burnley 0 Man City 6 spring to mind. In recent times I did not enjoy Burnley 0 Watford 0 last season. Dire performance with dire weather.

Semi-final defeats are tough to take, and those in 1974 and 1961 x 2 (FA Cup and League Cup in the same season) were very difficult to accept. But, from memory, the worst journey home was from West Brom in a League match in 1967......We lost 1-8 and the one we scored was a late consolation goal from Arthur Bellamy......a horrible feeling.

For me it’s the trip to Sheffield Wednesday for the FA cup quarter final replay in 1983, 5-0 defeat, I was heartbroken !

Liverpool fans are exactly the same after we beat them at the Turf 1-0 can't remember when it was,I was attacked by about six of them while I was with my very young sister,Liverpool & Celtic fans two of the worst set of fans on the planet.
Yes, we beat them once in the mid-70s as far as I recall Peter Noble scored a controversial goal and their fans behaved atrociously in the Longside (before the fence).

It was interesting for me because my parents are Scousers and I lived in Liverpool up to the age of 6 or 7 so Liverpool was my other team. I went to Anfield watching Burnley a few times in the 70s, which was a bit of a treat.

Later, I turned against Liverpool because of their Woollyback humour, which I didn't rally enjoy that much with my newly acquired thick Burnley accent.

Norwich away last season was pretty awful too. Witnessing dyches last game as he went out with a whimper after driving to the back of beyond for my sons first away ‘experience’

“Daddy I don’t want to go back to Norwich ever again”

Don’t worry son

October 14th 2003 - Ipswich 6-1 Burnley . It really was desperate, five down at half time and we had subs wearing business suits! The Ipswich fans actually pitied us...its the worse reaction you can get from any victor. I have seen some bad ones but this left me feeling completely empty....we were dreadful.

There are many during our time in the fourth division that I have managed to delete from memory for good mental health reasons. But I think above all the 1974 FA cup semi final at Hillsborough was my least favourite game. We were head and shoulders better than Newcastle but managed to allow Malcom MacDonald to batter his way through twice whilst we could not get near scoring. All the time I was being crushed in the Leppings lane end as to the tune of 'Howay the lads'.

5-0 defeat against rover is by far the worst

The rest of my top ten are made up of Cotterball matches
I watched in the pub. As the goals went in I kept going back to the bar. I’m a lightweight and up in a drunken tearful heart to heart with the only other Burnley fan in the pub (a complete stranger) about how we’d never beat rovers and how it was a metaphor for life or somesuch. A friend called my wife to take me home….

Surprised the Mark Kendal inspired 5-2 at Blackpool in 92 hasn't been mentioned. That was bad.

Quite a few to choose from

3-0 Chesterfield away. Dave Lancaster hat-trick 1993
4-1 Hartlepool away 1994
5-0 Gillingham home 1999
6-0 Man City Home 1999. Still not sure how Stan survived this
2-0 rovers home 2000. Confirmation of the gulf
6-1 Man City Home 2010. Disaster from start to finish. Kev McD gave up that day too. Showed how much Laws was out of his depth
2-0 Norwich away 2022. Confirmed for me that Dyche was done

Of all of them, the one I really wish hadn't happened was the Rovers game

There's also a game I think I've deleted from my brain it was that bad. Early 90s. Away. I think I arrived 2 minutes in, and we were already a man down. I thought it was Joe Jakub but I can't find any evidence of this. Anyone know?

Hartlepool away some time in the 90's. Midweek game in winter conditions. We had 2 men sent off early and the lack of a stand on one side meant the north sea wind blew directly into us. Cold doesn't begin to cover it. I think they scored 4 but it was difficult to see with the ice forming on my eyelashes.

A few fairly recent ones that spring to mind.

Accy 1 Burnley 0 LC, and to make it worse our dire display was shown on Sky, Tarks played that night among several first-teamers, yet we didn't muster an effort on target in 120 minutes.

Burnley 0 Bournemouth 2 FA Cup 5th round, SD decided for whatever reason to field a weakened side, and we were 2nd best all evening, made it even worse when the draw the following day would have seen us having a winnable tie at home to Southampton.

Regarding league games the 2 horror shows at Brentford and Norwich last season will live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons.

And Newcastle at home when with survival in our grasp we simply never turned up on the day.

Looking further back the 1-0 reverse at Chesterfield under Waddle, when their fans were taking the mick showed that it would be a long season that year.

I crossed the Pennines from Durham in January 1980 we played Bury away in the cup. We lost 1 - 0 Stevenson was adjudged to have taken the ball over the goal line. We were obliged to watch the game in a small roped off area where we stood on wobbly wooden planking. ( Health and Safety?)

The company i worked for at the time had a box at Portman Rd. Head office was in Ipswich but they didn't do any business in the area. Every Friday, even when Ipswich were in the Premier League an email went around offering free tickets for the game that weekend. I went a couple of times - West Ham and Arsenal games. I was in there for the 2-2 draw the season previous and for this one i managed to get 4 tickets, so I took Bedfords, another Claret from Welwyn who's name i have forgotten and then CT got the other ticket. We lined up without a recognised centre half (3 full backs and a winger formed our back 4). I think it took Ipswich 20 minutes to score their first and my comment of "I reckon that's the floodgates opened" was never more apt. It seemed like every time they went forward they scored and what made it worse was the Ipswich fans were infront of the box on the other side of the glass and they all turned round to watch the replays of the goals on the TV in the box. We did pull one back just after half time and stemmed the tide until the 90th minute when Ipswich made it a round half dozen. By this time we were well on our way back to the A12 and a journey back to Hertfordshire in record time.

Losing 6-5 to Grimsby away in 2002 must have been pretty awful for those who went.

Scoring five away yet still having lost the game wouldn't have gone down well surely?

First game I took my daughter to was the Brian laws sacking game. I hadn’t seen a game in ages. I lived in the USA and she lived in England. She’s never been on a game ever again.

Worse experience - the Celtic game

Most miserable - in the rain at Hull City, having had my umbrella confiscated

Has to be B@stards 5-0 at Deadwood. Brother-in-law was a BFC director at the time and got my other bro-in-law & myself in their hospitality area, with seats in the main stand.

Was sat next to one of my all-time favourites, Ian Brennan. Desperately thinking of something to say to him, I asked if he had played in many games against the B@stards, to which he tersely replied 'Yes, and scored against 'em!' End of conversation. Thing is, I had probably been to those games! Then Ian Moore 'scored', and we received dog's abuse after celebrating the 'goal'.

Close was a game at Portsmouth - never been so cold!

Celtic was the only game I can remember leaving early - very early!

I think I was at that game...lost 2-0 on a New Years Day. Pitch was half-frozen and I seem to remember Adrian Heath sliding around trying to get the ref to abandon ! Probably the coldest Ive been in my life !

Yes, I'm sure that was the game where we ended up in an enclosure in the middle of the Preston fans because the away end was full. It was chaotic..
Yes we were in that enclosure. Got in the ground 2-0 down, away end full so we climbed into an enclosure that was empty. Police marched us down the touchline past the PNE fans. Even the disabled section was giving us abuse. We were put into an enclosure with PNE to our left, right and behind, they were enjoying all the goals and were happy to rub it in. In the 2nd half Pearce took a short free kick to either Bray or Deakin who wasn't looking, the ball went out for a Preston throw in.

Charlton away 1977. Burnley scored first, Newton, but lost 5-2. Got soaked standing on an open terrace and got lost leaving the ground. Thoroughly miserable night.
My sister and her boyfriend also left the Celtic game early.

If you're an old git like me then you'll have more than one, but, one that's burnt into my soul is the 5:0 at Ewood. I still need revenge for that, I know we've beaten them since but I need a real thumping of the bast___s to let that one go to bed so to speak.

There are 2 games that immediately spring to mind. Both horrible games in horrible conditions.

The 1st a 0-0 draw away at Wigan in the Ternant era possibly around Jan 2005 (I know I could look it up) and the other probably late 90's early 2000's was a 3-0 defeat away at Macclesfield.

Talking of games in horrible conditions the 6-1 hammering at the Turf by Man-City wasn't one of my favourite games...I had a season ticket in the James Hargreaves lower that season.............

Millwall 0 Northampton 0
Cant remember exactly when it was, but at Millwall s old ground. I also can't remember exactly what I was doing there, but I had gone to London to see a game which was called off and ended up at Millwall instead because it had survived the weather.

The one thing that it taught me was that I thereafter got why people that aren't into football think it is boring. If you don't want one of the sides to win (or one of them to lose) then a boring game is more boringly boring than any game that features a side that you like - even if it is the under 16's or a game where we don't have a shot on target.

Having looked it up, it must have been even more boring than I thought as it wasn't Northampton Town playing. Some other nothing team, I suppose.

Plenty of bad ones but in 1999 Burnley 0 Gillingham 5 followed by Burnley 0 Man City 6 spring to mind. In recent times I did not enjoy Burnley 0 Watford 0 last season. Dire performance with dire weather.
I was working in Sittingbourne at the time and the office had several Gills supporters. Fortunately I was in Florida for both these games …… unfortunately my desk was covered in newspaper reports of the Gills game when I went back to work.

I think my worst game was a very boring 0 : 0 away to Brighton when they were using an athletics stadium for home games. Bitterly cold and wet mid week game and I think the gymnastics class in the sports hall was more interesting than the match.

Talking of games in horrible conditions the 6-1 hammering at the Turf by Man-City wasn't one of my favourite games...I had a season ticket in the James Hargreaves lower that season.............
A Hammering and Pneumonia ....wasn't a great day was it?
No it was a shocker on all fronts but unlike Macclesfield at least there was a roof 😆

With a bit of imagination you never have to be a neutral. I had a dodgy pie at Sixfields, and for that reason would have wanted Millwall to win.

Reading 5 Burnley 1. 84/85. We were 1-0 up at half time through Wayne Biggins, playing with a gale behind us. It all started quite early in the second half when Tommy Hutch switched off from a corner and then the wind just seemed to keep blowing the ball into our net occasionally abetted by Trevor Senior. At the time Reading had switched from their royal blue hoops into light blue and white stripes and black shorts. The only entertainment of the second half was an extremely drunk claret railing against the f**ing Argies!
