Least favourite game ....

Post by Clarets4me » Thu Sep 29, 2022 1:04 pm

Feature currently running on the " Guardian " website, we've had a couple of mentions ....

" 2nd January 2016, Burnley 0-0 Ipswich

Burnley were stuttering thus far and a team meeting a week before had, shall we say, refocused the mind. Both teams went out with a mindset that they must not lose. In the end, Burnley were poor, Ipswich even worse.

Dyche-ball has a reputation for being horrible but even the worst of it was like Barcelona compared to what Mick McCarthy's men were doing. The entire match was played in an area around the centre circle, all but the goalkeepers in a space 10m wide and 10m long. The ball was repeatedly launched into orbit. Players hugged and grabbed and tripped each other. The refereeing was so bad that I do remember Andre Gray being rugby tackled on the halfway line and the entire stadium rising in the most sarcastic standing ovation I've seen in years.

After the match Ipswich fans pointed to the stats, saying their team had more shots than the hosts. Well, yes, technically, if you count repeatedly trying to score from 40 yards and smashing it into the stand as a shot.

Part of the fun of Turf Moor is seeing how the visitors react to the cold winter conditions but this was absolute torture, with the majority of fans wishing they were in the warm watching something on the telly. Didn't matter what, repeats of Songs of Praise, a documentary about Estonian milk farms, every episode of Miranda, it couldn't help but be more entertaining that the absolute stodge that the two teams put on that afternoon. Speaking of which, the TV "highlights" that evening were last on the schedule, consisted of 20 seconds of footage followed by Colin Murray saying "that's more than that game deserved". He was absolutely right.

Runner up: Burnley 0 Man City 2, April 2022. De Bruyne scored inside five minutes and the rest of the game was played out in the very definition of the phrase "contractual obligation". Gundogan scored the second twenty minutes later and if the ref had blown for full time after that, not a single thing of consequence or interest would have been lost. "

Secondly -

9th February 1991 ... Leyland DAF Cup, Northern Semi Final, Preston 6-1 Burnley

Under manager Frank Casper, Burnley took around 3,000 fans with spirits high to play on Preston's abomination of an astroturf pitch. Their new signing, Ronnie Jepson scored a hat-trick, as they raced into a 4-0 lead. Our consolation came at 5-0, with an Ian Bray backheel ...

My late Father in Law and I left early to get back for a quiet pint at the Railway WMC, in Rosegrove, Burnley. As we walked through the door, the back page of the local evening paper featuring a headline " The plastic will suit us - Casper " had been pinned to the dartboard, and six darts had been pinned through Casper's smiling visage !!

Seven months later, Jimmy Mullen took over, we immediately won 8 on the bounce and went up as 4th Division Champions, 6 points clear of Rotherham. After the ignomy of nearly being relegated from the Football League in May 1987, the road back had begun ...

I think Watford at home last season was poor.
Some cup finals and internationals are just as bad though.

I must have been at the Ipswich game, and remember nothing about it at all. The 6-1 at Preston I do recall more vividly.

That training session against City neatly sums up the reality of the Premier League once the novelty has worn off.

The FA Cup Quarter Final away at Watford under Stan Ternent is a game I've been trying to forget for years ....

Got to be Watford away in 2003 in the quarter finals of the F.A.Cup. Little and Blake on the bench.

Biggest let down with Stan throwing one in when the game was very winnable.

Was the Preston game the one where the away end was full and we had to stand in a small section in the middle of the home fans.

it was one away game at Preston, but I can't recall which one.

Crewe away 1987 lost 1 worst game I have ever been to

Telford away 1986 lost 3-0 deserves a mention too, but the Crewe game should be anyone's least favourite who was there

Loads of us were locked out that night. I was outside ground hearing goal cheers and after about 30 mins Burnley fans started leaving telling us on the way we were 3 down (think Jepson scored a hattrick for them that night)

I was on supporters coach so had to wait and finally got in ground when we were 5-0 down.

I defend Stan every time this comes up. He went with the same team that had comfortably dispatched Premier League Fulham 3-0 in the previous round.

As for least favourite, there were many candidates in Cotterill's 19 game winless run. I remember the crowd getting excited about a carrier bag blowing in the wind at one point.

I dont blame Stan too much for sticking with a formula that seemed to be working but I often wonder if we'd have been better off getting beaten in a couple of league games prior to Watford which probably would have seen Stan bring back Blake and Litlle

I came away from Crewe that night convinced we were leaving the league via the trapdoor. To say I was disconsolate was an understatement.

Another acknowledgement for this game, the seeming inevitability of non-league was there for all to see. Also remain convinced the ref blew for full time about 3 or 4 minutes early!

Another vote for the Watford away 2003 cup tie.
However well we played against Fulham in the previous round, and whether it was the right team to pick again, we just didn't turn up for the Watford game.

Very disappointing.

2 already mentioned - Crewe in 1987 and 1st April 2001. I was also at the 6-1 debacle against PNE. 5-0 away at Wycombe under Heath was another shocker - I had moved to London the week previously so it was only a short run up the M40 to see the Clarets. I left early at 4-0 down (it was 4-0 at half time where we were treated to the infamous gut barging display from 2 well known and sadly now departed Clarets, Selwyn and Rocky. Wycombe scored their 5th as i was walking back to the car only to find it blocked in and having to sit on the car park until the match finished.

Plymouth at home under Cotterill, pretty sure it was 0-0, absolutely woeful game.
Hull at home under Dyche in his first few months, midweek match, think we lost 1-0.

Two that popped straight to mind, never been as bored on the Turf.

No arguments against any of the ones chosen thus far. A game at Boothferry Park in the mid 90's when I think Clive Middlemass was in charge. Anyway, we lost 3-0.
Much more recent was the 0-1 home defeat to Arse Al early last season. Underlined for me just how one dimensional we had become under Dyche, especially in the first half where we were squeezing any fun left out of the game.

I’ll give three of mine:

1) Sheffield United 3-0 Burnley, March 23rd 2002

Sheffield United 3-0 Burnley

My first ever away game, filled with intrigue & excitement venturing across the spine of England to the Steel City…. The excitement soon turned to misery & misfortune at the dross that ensured, so much so that I turned to my dad at the end of 90 minutes and exclaimed, “I’m never coming to an away game ever again!” - Oh how wrong was I.

Was a game that literally exemplified our infamous 01-02 season; a trailblazing start at the beginning of the year to heartbreak from narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

Gazza, who I’m sure was either hungover or intoxicated was demanding the ball in midfield, acting like he was still leagues above the standard and proceeded to spend the entire match screaming and pointing at fellow teammates & launching the ball either into the stands on attempted defence-splitting diagonals across the pitch or into the hands of Simon Tracey… Speaking of which seemed to engage in 90 minutes of football tennis with our goalkeeper Marlon Beresford.

Utter crap - somewhere in those 90 minutes we conceded 3 terrible goals.

Worst day ever

2) Burnley 0-2 Scunthorpe, 28th December 2010

The final nail in the coffin for Brian Laws, it was the first home game after Christmas and a sure fire guaranteed win* to put us back in the playoffs after the crushing relegation we had just endured from the Premier League.

Sadly, it was not to be… the game was flat and the side seemed out of ideas and not really playing as a cohesive unit. The turf moor faithful was turning and you could really feel the toxicity in the air…

When Scunthorpe put one past us you thought to yourself, ‘surely not, we’ll still win this’ but then the second was slotted past Lee Grant in the 84th minute you just knew we were pretenders, we weren’t going back up and who knew when or if we ever would go back up - the dream was well and truly over.

3) Third was a hard one for me, was either the disastrous cup exit to non-league Lincoln which was truly embarrassing but I’ve decided to opt for:

Burnley 0-2 Swansea, January 10th 2009

I’ll always remember this game, I recall a reporter calling it ‘the coldest game ever’ - well at least it was for me.

I was an adolescent at the time and me and my mates thought we were really cool for having a few tinnies earlier in the day under the winter sun - which put me into a false sense of security as I proceeded down Brunshaw Road dressed in nothing more than shorts and a t-shirt (seriously what was I thinking) to watch us uncharacteristically get absolutely footballed off the park for 90 minutes, falling to a brace from the legendary Jason Scotland.

As soon as the sun disappeared around kickoff the temperature plummeted - I was f****** freezing to say the least.

I was a ‘hardcore’ then so no way I’d leave early, but I recall not being able to feel my toes and hands till the next morning and being ill for 3 days following. In hindsight I should have left at half time because I’m pretty sure I was close to hypothermia… but I guess I wouldn’t have this memory now!

He wasn't saving them, we had been on a run of 3 wins and 1 draw plus beating Fulham in the previous round. I think one or both had been injured and his replacement 4-5-1 formation with Taylor up front had been working.

I didn't agree with the decision as I thought we were a bit lucky in a lot of those games but if you're the manager and your team keeps getting results you can't blame him for thinking they could do the business at Watford

Burnley 0-0 Plymouth at the Turf early in the season when Coyle eventually took us up via the play offs. Turgid doesn't come close to describing it and Eagles got himself sent off near the end, but tbf he'd probably seen enough and just wanted to beat the traffic. Awful stuff.

What about Burnley 0 v 0 West Brom the season before last?

Never have I seen a Burnley side so incapable of playing a simple 5-yard pass and this was in the Premier League, not the old Division 4 ! We were summarily outplayed for the whole of the second half by a 10-man West Brom side bound for the Championship, who had they taken any of the numerous chances they spurned, would have won comfortably.

Has to be the Celtic game,I was honestly frightened to death that night,my worst ever experience inside a football ground,I now live amongst them and they are still as obnoxious as f**k to this day...horrible fans are Celtic supporters
.
I was a young boy with my middle aged father and they were threatening him. Can you imagine being such a low life sub-species as to start threatening a middle aged man with his terrified young son...! I rarely do hyperbole but their are few words to describe such people.

Yes, I'm sure that was the game where we ended up in an enclosure in the middle of the Preston fans because the away end was full. It was chaotic..

Sheffield United 2002 .3-0
Sheffield United 2019 3-0

Never going there again
Was waiting for someone to mention the 3-0 in 2019. One of my worst from recent memory.

It was hammering it down all day from the moment we left Manchester, the drive across was awful with very little visibility on the motorway. Three first half goals and zero fightback.

Then had to come back over the Snake Pass with the same awful weather.

...Telford away 1986...
Oh that one hurt; we went with/stayed with friends who were Telford fans; the game was painful, but they then took the **** out of me all night too.

...Sheffield United 3-0 Burnley, March 23rd 2002

...Gazza, who I’m sure was either hungover or intoxicated...
That was another one we went to with friends - Blades supporters - the only consolation that I remember was watching Beresford make a fantastic save to keep out a high lob goal attempt; though the fact that it was Gascoine's 'shot' did spoil it a bit.

It was a properly putrid performance wasn’t it.

Maybe I look back at it worse than it actually was but I doubt it, complete and utter dross.

Crewe away 1987 lost 1 worst game I have ever been to

Telford away 1986 lost 3-0 deserves a mention too, but the Crewe game should be anyone's least favourite who was there
The worst thing about Telford is that it wasn't even a shock...they were the favourites to win.

Grimsby Town 3 - 1 Burnley in 2002

Michael Boulding (who?) looked like Messi for them. Michopoulos was horrendous (as so often that season) as was the ‘defence’ of Davis and Gnohere. Lee Briscoe got a consolation and Gazza came on probably half cut looking like a bloke who had wandered on from the stand.

I’ve seen us battered plenty of times over the years, but that first half is laser etched into my cerebral cortex as the worst 45 minutes I’ve ever seen from Burnley.

Liverpool fans are exactly the same after we beat them at the Turf 1-0 can't remember when it was,I was attacked by about six of them while I was with my very young sister,Liverpool & Celtic fans two of the worst set of fans on the planet.
