New Springsteen album

Post by Brucefanclaret » Fri Sep 30, 2022 9:37 am

Due out next month. Soul numbers - just listened to Bruce singing Do I Love You (Indeed I do). I was a soul babe back in the day, especially Stax and Atlantic - not sure about this at all. What does anyone else think?

Bruce with the E Street band is the best music there is, in my opinion, way back to the mid 70s, and are excellent live.

When ever he has strayed from that format I've not it liked so much

Should stick to what he's best at....Do I love you is a great track....which Bruce has kind of ruined.

Amazing talent, amazing tunes and utterly amazing live which I've been treated to several times, but as mentioned above, stick to what you are brilliant at Bruce.

I’ve had it on pre-order for a while now. Didn’t know about the soul feel but it'll be a grower.
If he doesn’t get you at first listen he’ll get you at third or fourth.

Never liked Springsteen. Always photographed with a Telecaster round his neck, then when you listen to his stuff its all sax and keyboards.

Heard the Springsteen track on Vernon Kays show this morning. As a Springsteen and Northern Soul fan couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Bruce- you're a legend, you've no need to do covers of other peoples classics. What next a spice girls tribute album? Nay lad.

Perhaps you need to listen better, two excellent guitarists in the band, in addition to Springsteen, all can be be heard very clearly on most tracks

Over the years he’s done some fabulous covers. Mostly for the live shows rather than recordings. His cover of Bob Dylan’s Chimes of Freedom being my favourite.

An album of covers suggests a lack of creativity and originality. Maybe selling his back catalogue for megabucks has reduced his creative spark.

The title track is " Only the strong survive " the old Jerry Butler classic ... you need to be careful re-interpreting much loved originals !

Regular posters will know I'm an Elvis aficionado, but Butler's version is even better than Presley's 1969 rendition that appeared on " From Elvis in Memphis " ...

I'm a massive Springsteen fan but I do have reservations about this new soul covers album. Having watched the video for Do I Love You (Indeed I do) it's kind of irresistible but this is more down to the power of the song , allied to a big production.
Nothing he's done or will do will ever surpass the genius trilogy of albums Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River in the late '70s but despite the odd lapse in quality (notably the Working on a Dream album) Bruce has maintained a fantastic standard well into old age up to now.
Personally I love the Western Stars album from around 4 years ago with it's classic songwriter stylings and character studies. The film that was released containing live versions of the songs and commentary from Bruce was magnificent.

I really rated his Seeger Sessions album from a few years back. Will be interesting to hear his latest effort

That’s a fair comment. I guess I thought The Seeger Sessions fitted better with his gritty , true All- American persona. An album of soul covers seems less consistent, and more opportunistic.
But having said that - I thought “Pin Ups” was a great David Bowie album (albeit not soul songs) and I love Eric Clapton’s versions of “In The Midnight Hour” and “Hold On, I’m Coming”. So what do I know…?

Yes I'd agree, felt in keeping with his Darkness on the Edge of Town/Ghost of Tom Joad era stuff.

Will be good to see how much of a departure the other new covers will be from the originals

Aye, you'd think I'd be able to hear it being a pro guitarist.

I often wondered why you have an ability like Nils Lofgren in your band and you don’t utilise his talents too much.

I think Bruce doing covers at live shows is fine. He’s a great songwriter so I’m not sure why he’s doing a covers album. I said when he did the Seegers Session album that it’s self indulgent but he knows his fans will buy it. He’s in danger of tainting his legacy by releasing stuff like this, and alienating his fan base for charging so much for tickets to his shows. Perhaps he should be revisiting some of his older stuff like he did with Ghost of Tom Joad

The 3pm Sunday slot at Burnley Wood club doesn't count as a pro guitarist

I've some sympathy with that view. First time I played it was 1978 and really enjoyable (the last free festival there I think) but as it's grown it's become more of a grind.

More an age thing, both comfort wise, and music, and price. At least you've had the experience of playing there
