Terribly sad. My reading of this suggests that away fans got on the pitch and as a consequence, police followed, flooding the playing area with tear gas. This more than likely caused thousands to immediately dash in panic for the exits, resulting in crushing around the stadium. Desperately sad. A full enquiry has been ordered.

And we have complained about our cops at times. Tear gas in a football stadium...utterly ridiculous...it would affect even those doing no wrong and has obviously caused mass panic it seems. Very sad news indeed.
Re: 174 dead in football stampede
Both upsetting and disgraceful. Hard to imagine how things like this can happen. Shameful by the authorities.

Terrible.

Terrible yes and particularly knowing that I have visited both these places in East Java numerous times. I cant take it in.

I believe it was the home fans who invaded the pitch and the police fired tear gas in to the home stands not just the pitch causing the panic and rush for the exits. Apparently a lot of the deaths were from suffocation due to the tear gas and not just the crushjdrobbo wrote: ↑Sun Oct 02, 2022 9:16 amTerribly sad. That's my take on it too, I saw reports that when the tear gas was fired it rose up into the top tiers of the stands, causing panic. Whatever has happened it's tragic.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Oct 02, 2022 10:57 amI believe it was the home fans who invaded the pitch and the police fired tear gas in to the home stands not just the pitch causing the panic and rush for the exits. Really sad reading that today , did stay for a few days in Surabaya long time ago always remember a large painting in the place where i stayed of the South Korean passenger plane that was shot down by the Russians in the 80s .
Again hard to get your head around going to a football game and not coming home .

Re: 174 dead in football stampede
I remember attending England vs Belgium in Turin in the 1980 Euros. There was a scuffle between some non-English fans in the England end and some likely lads. It had all faded out but by then the Italian police had already decided to send in the riot police. I was near to the front of the crush where police were coming at fans weilding their truncheons and fans had nowhere to go but back towards the police…… and then they fired the tear gas in. I copped a huge lungful.
Horrible, horrible. Disgraceful how amateur authorities can be in public disturbances. So sad for these people and their families

Insistence on a specific IQ for senior police officials would go much further than removing terracing as a measure for ensuring safety at football grounds.
