Overlooked maybe ?

Post by 1882Clarets1882 » Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:50 pm

Looking at the board since last night , I'm not sure if anybody has focused on JBG"s goal.

Coming off the bench and scoring an absolutely class goal as he did, must give him a real boost going forward for the rest of our campaign.

Hes had his injury issues, but a fit JBG playing with renewed confidence can only be a good thing especially at championship level.

Good point and he will offer us a potent threat if he can stay fit, sadly that is a big if based on his recent injury history.

Perhaps he can be used as an impact sub later in games, he certainly made a huge impact last night from the bench.

I dont dislike JBG, and he has had some great seasons with us. However for all his skills he looks slow and ponderous. OK last night he cut in and scored a beauty with his left foot. However how often do you see us break, give it to him on the right wing, and expect him to beat his man and cross with his right. 9 times out of 10 he has to stop, check, and manoevure the ball to his left foot, by then the opposition have regrouped. By contrast Zaroury and Tella look explosive on the break, and from what I saw the former should have had a penalty in the second half through one of these runs

Can't disagree with most of that and in a way maybe JBG is yesterday's man, but credit where credits due it was a belting goal and should do his confidence no harm even if he's to a bench warmer only used for impact.

Was a brilliant goal and he certainly seemed to relieve some pressure with his celebration.

I don't see him being overlooked, it's a case of we've been here before. He gets games and then gets injured. A solid option from the bench though.

Impact sub is probably the best way to use him, minimises the risk of injury by playing him sparsely

Good goal, but everything else he offered last night was terrible. Sloppy passing, not challenging for headers and generally being a soft touch. I was hoping he'd look better at this level but so far he hasn't.

JBG 5 years ago would be unreal at this level. He just isn't the same player. Can still be useful. He was great though first two seasons for us before the injuries.

Play him on the left?

Like when he crossed for Jayrod to score recently at the Turf

He was very good at Wigan. Looks to have more end product than the other 2 wingers (tella is a forward)

Up to Vinny who he prefers.

When he was injured

I think he has done enough this season to be given a chance

JBG has done well for us when he played but those repeated calf and thigh injuries (with some knee, hamstring and appendix too) have really hurt him. He is a bit one footed but at this level you can get away with it, in his best 2 years in the PL he had something like 15 assists across those years so it didn’t hold him back up there either.

I think his biggest asset to us this season though is his height, we are a very small team so anybody over 6 ft is a big asset. We need to play him while we can because, in that he has already missed games with his calf this season, he is unlikely to be fully available.

Which is why JBG would be best employed as an impact sub, not starting.

Can’t deny what a peach of goal this was , but JBG and “ impact sub” are (ironically) not words often heard in the same sentence .
