Great 2nd half Burnley fightbacks
I know this was touched upon in other threads, but after yesterday's huge comeback it really deserves a thread of it's own.
Can't recall many however a few come to my mind.
Palace home think we were 2-0 down at HT yet hit back to win 4-2.
Hull away when we bagged 3 in the last 15 mins to win 3-2 at the death.
QPR away when Andy Cole netted a HT from memory.

Barnsley home in I think 2006? 2-0 down before GNW scored a hat trick and won 4-2.
Preston home in 2010, 3-1 down after 80 mins and won 4-3.
Tottenham home 2010, 2-0 down and won 4-2.

Not sure I've ever felt sicker when they scored.

Modric scored a superb goal for Spurs, real quality.
When they came out for the 2nd half knowing Arsenal had clinchéd 4th spot, they alledgedly switched off.
Yea, right!

Re: Great 2nd half Burnley fightbacks
Spurs away 1960/61 season. 4-0 down after about 35 mins and 4-1 at half time. Game finished 4-4 in a week where we had played in Europe a couple of days before.
League Cup tie at Bradford City in late 70's. 2-0 down at half time and ended up winning 2-3.
Was it Charlton late 70's when we were 1-4 down in the second half and finished with a 4-4 draw.
Worst one I went to with the boot on the other foot was that bloody FA Cup tie (6th round) v Blackburn in 1960. 3-0 up with around 17 minutes left and drew 3-3.

Re: Great 2nd half Burnley fightbacks
Whenever this subject appears, for me, there's only one classic of all-time dating way back to December 1960 at White Hart Lane. To set the scene.....We are the reigning First Division Champions, Tottenham are an all-conquering side and arguably the best team in the land at the time.
Four days earlier we were involved in a titanic European Cup tie away at Reims, after which we were knackered and in the first-half at Tottenham it showed. After half an hour we were 0-4 down and looking shattered. Somehow a Jimmy McIlroy inspired response brought us what seemed like a consolation goal from John Connelly just before the interval.
Pride kept us going in the second-half and goals from Ray Pointer, Jimmy Robson and another from Connelly gave us an unlikely 4-4 draw. Never have I been more proud to be a Burnley fan than I was that day.

In the notes, if you click on '47.16 December 1960', it's the first match, played on a lovely pitch!

In October 1969 we had two home games in succession where we came from 0-2 down to win 4-2, although can't recall halftime scores. First we beat Palace, then 7 days later Sheff Weds. Was on both games with my dad, and I do still remember him saying that we wouldn't repeat the Palace comeback when we went two down against Sheff Weds as they had a much better defence

Not until i just looked him up! 1 goal in a handful of appearances before quitting for university!
There was also a dramatic second half turnaround vs Everton in March 74. 0-1 down at halftime and I am sure we scored three late goals timed incredibly inside three minutes to win 3-1.

Re: Great 2nd half Burnley fightbacks
72-73 promotion season. Looked like losing our unbeaten start to the term when we were 3-1 down on Ayresome Park to the Boro. Two very late goals from Fletch and Dobo salvaged a draw to keep the run going. I was working in Stockton at the time and went on with a colleague, big Boro fan, so I was stood in their cemetery end. Kept me mouth shut but not the smile.
Lost at home the following weekend.

Can we have 2nd leg Burnley fightbacks ?
Gerry McEvoy, Peter Jones, Mick Docherty, Wilf Wrigley, Eddie Cliff, Eric Probert, Alan West, Dave Hartley, Willie Brown, Dave Thomas, Steve Kindon & George Coppock.
Apologies, feeling nostalgic tonight after a couple of large whiskies.

A few posters have highlighted this game as the biggest and best Claret comeback. When Spurs scored their fourth goal to take a 4 nil lead Dave MacKay 'took the mickey' by bowing to the crowd ( not sure if it was to their supporters or Burnley's,) he didn't repeat it after 90 minutes! I have wondered if his actions were the catalyst for that marvellous response. (I also recall that Burnley nearly won it with Connelly going close at the end.)

Re: Great 2nd half Burnley fightbacks
Aye Connelly hit the post and Bill Brown made a brilliant save from Brian Miller......but, for balance, John White missed an open goal for them. 5-5 would have been a fitting scoreline for two of the greatest club sides in Europe at the time.claret59 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 23, 2022 8:17 pmSpurs away 1960/61 season. 4-0 down after about 35 mins and 4-1 at half time. Don't think it was down to Mackay's actions.......it was merely Jimmy Mac literally taking over a game in his inimitable fashion. Just wish jedi_master could see the second half highlights.

Got back in just in time to see Super Taff score a beauty.
A fellow Claret, no idea who he was, that got kicked out at the same time, had a screwdriver put through his cheek, as we walked around the cricket ground, by a pleasant bunch of Scousers.

I went to a match at Chelsea years ago. A midweek afternoon match rearranged. Bad winter?
Anyway, we were 3 nil down at half time and drew 3-3.

Seem to remember a home match early 70s vs Sheffield Wednesday, 2 possibly 3 down at halftime and put 5 up them in the second with Paul Fletcher getting a hat trick.
Re Wilf Wrigley I also remember him playing and quitting to go to university, I reckon he will be about 70 now, does anyone know what happened to him?

I remember us getting three goals in the last ten minutes to beat Everton 3-1 in 1973/74 to end a bad run in the league, despite winning cup games. The Longside then flushed the Everton fans down Brunshaw Road.

If I'm not mistaken I think Everton missed a penalty at 0-1. Alan Whittle was the culprit.

Cracking free kick from just outside the penalty area by 'Bomber' Harris to make it 4-3. 99/00 promotion season, 2-2 at Stoke after being 2-0 down. Two from Payts, the late equaliser being from 20 yards right in front of our fans.
