The current Man Utd 3rd choice goalkeeper

Post by 1882Clarets1882 » Sat Nov 05, 2022 3:18 pm

Would be an upgrade on the former Man City 3rd choice goal keeper in my opinion.

I'd have Tom Heaton back in a heart beat.

I’d like us to give our second choice ‘keeper a proper chance first.

Based on basic goalkeeping skills like catching a ball that comes near you...maybe.

Heaton was poor at coming for crosses and got a lot of stick on here for being routed to his line for corners. One of the big improvements when Pope came in was how much more safer we felt hanging on for a win or a draw when teams were launching balls into the box.

Heatons great strength was his shot stopping and his sheer consistency at not making errors but he definitely would not have been at ease today with those long throws being launched into the box.

The other notable difference when Heaton was in the nets was that he had the likes of Mee, Shackell, Keane, Tarks, Vokes and Wood in front of him defending set pieces

Scapegoat after today
However if we played a team of 6 foot players who could cross balls well and throw long balls well we would be hammered every week with all our tiny players who are clueless defending with horrible Zonal marking whoever we had in goal

Heaton's biggest attribute was organizing his defence, Muric is pretty young for a keeper still and has a lot of improvement to do

Heaton of old maybe, he's had a few shoulder injuries since then and never got picked at his previous club or current club which tells me he's never returned to his best.

Tom was a superb organiser.
Sorting ( good - see what i did there, Tom) crosses did seem the weakest part of his outstanding abilities. :D

Dealing with crosses is easy for a keeper. If it’s your ball then come for it and catch or punch it. If it’s then let your defense deal with and be ready for an attempt on goal. If he is under pressure Muric seems to do neither and our defense clearly has no idea what he is going to do. If I was his size I would simply wipe out anybody in my way. He looks apologetic. BPF should be given a few games.

Whilst I agree mercer has proven abilities in making good keepers great, I’m not sure that’s what we want.
Need? Yes definitely, but it seems goalkeeping is way down the list of skills required by the manager, and mercer is a goalkeeping coach.
Seems that a lot of managers these days just want a sweeper who can pick it up when necessary.

Let’s bring Arfield and Boyd back while we’re at it. Stephen Ward too. Get the grenade ball band back together.

Just to offer balance to your post . TH got badly injured at villa ( against us ) they understandbly brought in a top class replacement . As for his return to Man Utd ,he signed as 3rd choice and is doing his coaching badges , he’s actually been 2nd choice until a couple of weeks ago , and but for the ultra high end consistently of DDG would have played a much bigger part . At 36 though he’s no more coming back to Burnley as any of the other fan boy favs like Trippier /Ings et al so , yeah some really do need to let the past go .

Must admit my OP was a bit tongue in cheek , but I do wonder if Bart Verbruggen the young Dutch U21 keeper from Anderlecht, who let's not forget was probably Kompany's first choice , (remember the Simpsons related video ) would have been a safer pair of hands, literally. Don't want to kick a man when he's down but our current No1 hardly gained a top reputation while at Forest. Anyway, we are where we are , top of the league BTW, but I'd be considering letting BPF a run . The Derby next week then the break makes it awkward for Kompany though.

The number of times he came off his line and completely missed the ball, leaving the goal wide open, was dreadful. That said, they had 28 shots which is more worrying
