Barnes as captain
So everyone, what do we think about not only Barnes starting tonite, but starting as captain?
I’ll be honest, I’m a little confused. I’m sure I read on here after Saturdays game that after his “strop” when he stormed off after not being brought on he was unlikely to feature again…. Playing him tonite as captain sort of sends out a different message don’t you think? Well, that’s what I think. So maybe, there was a perfectly good reason for Ashley not featuring….
Anyway, he did ok tonite and was unlucky not to finish the game with a hat trick. Lovely taken goal I thought.

The oldest on the pitch so makes sense.
Probably about his level of opposition these days, not surprised to see him score.

Re: Barnes as captain
I’m reaching here but I saw starting him as captain as an olive branch from Kompany after Saturday’s events.
A different style of leadership. One I definitely prefer.

Good of Vincent making him captain and leading by example that is what might be the difference on Sunday.

I’m fed up with hearing the sh*t Barnes is getting.
Whether or not he’s good enough, he’s given 100% playing in a Burnley shirt since we signed him. The guy owes us nothing, we renewed his contract, age and injuries have caught up with him but he doesn’t deserve vitriol he’s received this season.

Re: Barnes as captain
Barnes has always been a Captain at Burnley.
Always 100%
Always for the team.
Always works hard,
By all accounts a key member of the dressing room.
Naturally helpful to newbies.
Grounded and finally found a home at Burnley.
Yes he is in his twilight - but yes he is still needed. Also an important link (like Cork) to the Burnley ethic.
Tonigth he missed a sitter and scored great finish (peak Barnes) plus an assist.
Plus the tireless effort making runs, pulling there defence one way or another...
Is he on his last season with us? Probably.
Would you want him in your Championship Squad for a return to the PL = HELL YEAH !
Lay off him if you are looking for moans...
I'm sure he'll play a part this season.
I'm pretty sure he is also well respected in the Day to Day glueing that makes a team.

There was no strop.... It was cleared up by the press shortly after full time on Saturday

Re: Barnes as captain
His volley against Rotherham was very unlucky to be given as offside. It was very marginal but I think he was onside. The amount of nonsense on here about him is ridiculous, particularly for the Sunderland game where everyone was bad and he wasn’t actually the worst. He has been a great servant and deserves a good send off at the end of the season. It wouldn’t surprise me if he nicked a couple of important goals in the league at some point.

Re: Barnes as captain
The morale of this tale is don't believe everything you read on UTC, especially if it's classed as a rumour..
Barnes did well last night, and it was pleasing to see him score, however the level of opposition does need to be taken into account at the same time.
Assuming Jay is fit Barnes won't start on Sunday, but he night have shown enough against Crawley and Rotherham to earn a spot on the bench, and his know-how could be important in the closing stages of a tense derby.
Almost certainly his last season along with a few others at this level, but our experienced core will all have a role during the season to nurture our youngsters.

Yet you mention it again and start a thread regards the rumour. For some it will only make the rumour become fact. Who do you support? Because threads like this are not needed and only detract from the feel good vibe around the club at the moment

Re: Barnes as captain
Oh give it a rest cleveleys ffs….
The thread was really just about knocking the rumour mill that’s rife on here, not trying to perpetuate it.
I read all the rumours, and didn’t get involved because I KNEW they were ********. This thread is about highlighting how far from the mark these rumours were. I mean, no manager would have one of his players behave the way it was suggested, and in the next game start him and make him captain would they? I was merely trying to highlight the inaccuracies of said rumours.
Maybe I wasn’t clear in my op. It’s the rumour mill o have an issue with, not Barnes.

What I would say is that if a player is currently playing and playing badly, then its ridiculous to not say so because he is a club legend
He was brilliant for us, he may well be again, but at the moment he has a hell of a long way to go to fit into our side as a useful option

Re: Barnes as captain
His legs have gone, only good enough to score against Rochdale? Isn't that what people were saying about Jay Rod last year. Deja vu anyone?
Has anybody actually seen statstics on Barnes' running? Distance covered, average speed, sprints per game.... Surely those are the sort of stats that will indicate if he's still physically capable or playing at this level. As for scoring, his header would have beaten a Championship Keeper and his finish against Rotherham was excellent even if it was offside. Barnes has always been a marmite player but there have definitely been glimpses of his brilliant best in the last two games. I've always felt that Barnes is at his best when he doesn't have time to think and just follows his instinct. Over the last few seasons he's been a victim of playing the Sean Dyche way, backing into players to try and win free kicks has become a bit of trade mark and last season I'm convinced that it stopped working when the referees decided to let the game flow and stop giving free kicks for minimal contact, Barnes had been winning around 2 fouls per game up to that point, last season that stat dropped to 0.5.
I reckon he's still got plenty to offer and could surprise a few people.

Unbelievable what Is being directed towards Barnes.
Yes, he is past his prime and not a starter anymore, but he’s always given his best and has never downed his tools.
I think at least a bit more support and respect is in order.

Re: Barnes as captain
I thought Ash showed his desire to get into scoring positions last night, his header was excellent and he pulls defenders around.
It seems he has stopped backing in and falling over hoping to gain free kicks. Maybe something has changed in his instructions from the coaching staff.
