No alcohol in fanzones and possibly stadiums at World.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/sport ... ANNED.html
Just been announced.
Another reason why it shouldn't be in Qatar or a good decision reflecting Qatari views and hopefully it will stop the plastic table throwers ?
Not sure myself why anyone would want to go there, I'm sure as well the idiots from various countries won't be going anyway as the deterrents for criminal activity will be off putting.

Re: No alcohol in fanzones and possibly stadiums at World.
I'm not against them banning the alcohol in the stadiums but it should of been announced years ago not the day before.
Nothing excites me about this World Cup.
I've seen nothing yet to suggest it was a good idea to give it Qatar.
I fear for anybody going out there, some people will be banged up for no reason.

I like a beer or two but it isn't an absolute deal breaker and to go without for a few weeks isn't a drama.
I suspect those doing the campaigning against not being allowed alcohol aren't even going to be there.

I think the real issue here is that Qatar have changed the rules at the last minute
What if they suddenly change the rules on something more serious?

If it was crap beer like they sell in most football stadiums then I applaud them for not selling it, especially at the rip of prices.
They were offering a burger and beer for 25 quid or something stupid.

Yeah, it's not about whether you can get through a game without a beer - it's the fact they've promised FIFA, and their main alcoholic beverage sponsor, one thing and then completely changed their mind at the last minute. Like they did with the timing of the tournament...twice. I suppose FIFA are getting what they deserve on some level.

If it was part of their bid and was accepted in 2010 then it would be ok. But a few days before? I suspect this was decided from the off. I would have thought logistically there would be a lot of alcohol already at these sites. So another lie.

If beer is banned, Budweiser would sue FIFA for breach of contract.

The whole show is a disgrace. Even if you overlook the fact that the stadiums are built on the bones of some of the poorest workers in the world, you still have the massive issue that this World Cup is taking place in a strict Islamic country that hardly has any history of football or league system. The whole thing was tarnished and spurious right from the off. There won't be much glory for the winners. History will make sure of that.

Looking forward to the World Cup. It will be interesting to see how Qatar comes across once it’s kicked off. I’ve been there with work and quite enjoyed the country.
However, I agree it’s certainly not a country blended to football culturally.
I do think there’s an element of hypocrisy in the press. What country could the World Cup be held in that wouldn’t upset certain nations?

I’m sure the inevitable legal case from Bud will be chump change for the Arabs .And it’s not actually affecting their sponsorship per se . The upside being nobody has to drink Budweiser at the matches ,surely only awkward teens and pro wrestling fans drink it anyway ?

I disagree there won’t be glory for the winners, they are still winning a World Cup regardless of where it’s held.Billy Balfour wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 11:39 amThe whole show is a disgrace. It’s a shame that money and greed put this World Cup where it is but we are where we are and I’ll be watching in with interest despite the poor timing and other issues.

Should never have been awarded to Qatar in my opinion and when you see the documentaries out there and read the FBI findings it’s shocking just how corrupt the whole process was for 2018 and 2022!
Back to the thread title however. Hopefully, one of the positives from limited or expensive alcohol access will be zero/minimal trouble from the small minority of idiot fans who end up getting into bother. Let’s face it, ‘Team England’ has had enough trouble over the years and no doubt much of it has been alcohol and/or drug induced!

Doesn’t affect corporate areas though, I wonder why.
I followed England home and away for a number of years and honestly it’s the drinking of beer which helps you cope with it, so I can see why people may struggle.
As others have said, not sure anyone is missing out not drinking Budweiser.

Re: No alcohol in fanzones and possibly stadiums at World.
Like a lot of people (not all I do know), I enjoy a beer or two around the football and regard going to matches as a very "social" thing, so were I bothering to attend this shamozzle I'd personally be more than a bit miffed off. However my biggest gripe with all this is exactly as others have stated above. The plans and promises laid out in the original (wining) bid have proved to be complete bobbins simply aimed at winning the event before back tracking constantly. Consequently I really couldn't give a toss about this WC and I'd have been more than happy for England to give it a miss, because I will be.

I think not too far in the future there will be countries looking back at this and thinking “I wish we had boycotted this utter sham”. We missed a real chance to be the driving force for what’s good and right and honourable.
Instead, we’ll have countries embarrassed about claiming the moral high ground because their captain wore a rainbow armband and they paid the fine.

I've always believed when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Qatar is entitled to enforce it's own laws and beliefs, and if you don't agree you really shouldn't be going.
The big problem here is giving them the tournament in the first place. Like others, I really have no enthusiasm for this WC. I couldn't care less who wins it. Partly to do with Southgate and his boring set up and favouritism, but mostly the timing and location of this WC.

You can get alcohol inside a stadium at the World Cup in Qatar if you have a corporate hospitality ticket, where prices start at £19,000.

But they promised that this World Cup would be a middle ground between western fans’ tastes and Qatar’s conservative culture. The stadium ban is backtracking on this promise. Also, it's quite convenient how this U-turn was announced only a couple of days before the start of the tournament. Basically, they had no intentions of keeping to what they previously said.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 1:01 pmI've always believed when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Re: No alcohol in fanzones and possibly stadiums at World.
It's their country, they should do what they want. It doesn't mean the rest of us have to accept it, or agree with it. Just don't go there, don't give them the world cup. Treat them like the pariahs they deserve to be, but don't go and complain about it.
We ALL bang on about freedom of speech, when what most people believe is a freedom to agree with themselves. We are all different, it's called diversity, and we fight for the rights of diversity within the law. Qatar are entitled to believe, and enforce, what they want. It's up to the rest of us to either accept or disagree with that, that's our entitlement. I'm not defending the Qatari regime, just defending their right to run their country, the way they see fit.
If we had refused the invitation to go to Qatar in the first place, it would have done a lot more to let them look in the mirror, than going and then moaning about it.
