Any recommendations for a local solicitor for a will

Post by troubleatmexico » Fri Nov 18, 2022 1:56 pm

I don't suppose anyone has had a will drawn up recently and recommends who they used? Looking to get one sorted in the near future.

Something we need to do soon. Someone said to us that a lot of charities are doing "free" will writing with a donation.

Quick google search through up the Marie Curie one.

If you’re quick you can take advantage of Will Aid where the solicitors are free but you’re encouraged to make a donation to charity. I did this a few years ago

If you wish to give some money to a charity you could contact the charity who might recommend a will writing company.

I recently used Accord Legal Services of St Helens. They ring you up and talk through everything, then draw up the will and send to you (this took about three months in my case). You then need to check it over of course then get two people (not beneficiaries) in the same room to witness you signing it. It was entirely free unless you need to use their service as an Executor.

I started writing Wills and Trusts to complement my Financial Advice business.

It's not a punt for business although I'm happy to help but I would consider the following:

- Being an executor is very challenging so definately ask those who you wish to appoint. Having a professional executor or back up can be useful but if the former the make sure they can be stepped down if requested.

- Don't overly complicate things i.e 2% to this friend, 2% to this colleague etc as if you fall out with them you may have to rewrite in full

- Trusts are very useful as they can protect your assets from being used to support long term for your spouse, your estate leaking if your spouse remarries or inheritance tax

- The catastrophe close i.e everyone dies in a plane crash is the least likely outcome but the one that tends to prevoke the most thought. Worth some time thinking beforehand.

- power of attorney are very useful documents which you don't realise until you need them

- you can also reword pension nominations to work in your favour.

Martin Lewis Moneysavingexpert.com website had stuff about November and wills being done in exchange for donation. Probably more detail about how to access etc.
