The National Dirge?

Post by Billy Balfour » Mon Nov 21, 2022 7:05 pm

I am not a fan of our National Anthem. I would rather have something uplifting. My choice would be Jerusalem. What would you opt for if you had a choice?

The best anthem is the Italian one, up tempo and uplifting. Ours is dreary in comparison

Or a good one like the French.

The same with La Marseillaise. The US anthem is also an uplifting tune.

Irish, Welsh and Scottish all better than the English (British) anthem especially at sporting events mainly I think because more of their fans actually sing the thing!

France and Italy probably have the best though.

What anthem was played for the English athletes at the recent Commonwealth games? I know they sometimes play Jerusalem at the cricket which is a far better tune

I’ve never understood why GSTK is the English national anthem when the monarchy is for Great Britain.

It’s fine for any GB team ,such as at the Olympics, but the all 4 home nations should have their own imo

They don’t, they play it before/as the players come out. National anthem is always the national anthem.

It's a little odd that the National Anthem of the United Kingdom is the same anthem as one of the member nations.

Especially the 4th & 5th verses 😉

"Lord grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,
Victory be holy made.
God save the King

May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God Save the King."

Now the Queen has passed I’d very much like a Jerusalem or Land of Hope Glory . But let’s face it , it’s not gonna change in King Charles’s reign for sure .

Yes..surely as a group people with a local attachment to "dark satanic mills" we should all get behind jerusalem ? Have any more stirring words ever been penned than :
Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear .Oh clouds unfold.
Bring me my chariot of fire"

King Charles recognises that it is not necessarily a good thing to have anything too jingoistic, so that probably rules out two of his favourite composers, parry and Elgar.

As a country we are pretty doomed, so let's go for some joy division.
New dawn fades? That would be appropriate every two years at tournament time.

Ha ha. You got that in before me. Great sketch by him talking about us being lapped at the opening ceremony. And he mentioned that it is terribly racist toward the Scots.

‘We are Monrovia and we don’t give a f*ck’. Comedy gold.

Not only is the Welsh national anthem better than ours, but the unofficial one is an absolute banger, even though I don't have the slightest clue about what they are singing about

Billy Connolly recommends, the theme from the Archers.

Why do people actually suggest old Victorian hymns or other music written in the 19th century, usually depicting Empire?

Bizarre!

As an atheist and a republican, god save the king frankly does nothing for me. And I would agree with those that have already mentioned it that it does seem strange that we do not have our own distinct English anthem.

Slightly off topic but the use of "has passed" instead of "has died" still irritates me.

We should be that the BBC now censor what we can and can't watch, something as trivial as a WC opening ceremony

So the BBC decide an opening ceremony isn't worth showing and that's "censorship"?
The Qatari culture stinks and our national broadcaster, in line with public opinion, I'd wager, has left it to those so interested in an opening ceremony such as this to find it on YouTube or wherever.
