15 Volleys
We've scored some crackers over the last few years

Re: 15 Volleys
They need to look up what a volley is! There’s maybe ten in that collection of fifteen. All cracking goals though.
Re: 15 Volleys
The Matt Lowton one for me is unbelievable, if City scored that with De Bruyne finishing it off we'd be seeing it every day. It's up there with the best in the premier league

Re: 15 Volleys
martin_p, I would love to know what your definition of a volley is, because I've just watched 15 volleys.
I'll help you out. A volley is when a ball not on the ground is struck. A ball in mid air.
If you don't know what a volley is you won't know what a half volley is either. That is when a ball is hit as it drops and hits the ground, at the precise moment that it hits the ground.
Hope that helps

Re: 15 Volleys
Incorrect. A volley is when the ball does not bounce at all and the player hits it, the ball cannot touch the floor prior (Blake’s goal for example). Others, like Arfield v Chelsea, are not volleys, they are simply shots from a bounce.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 7:14 pmmartin_p, I would love to know what your definition of a volley is, because I've just watched 15 volleys.

Re: 15 Volleys
Just like all those volleys that tennis players hit after the ball has bounced, and the sport they named volleyball due to the law requiring the ball to bounce before a player can hit it back over the net.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 7:14 pmmartin_p, I would love to know what your definition of a volley is, because I've just watched 15 volleys.

????
A volley is no bounce - eg Robbie Blake v MU. Volleyball - essential ball does not touch ground, on your side, hence all that diving, to keep it off the ground.
Half volley, also as stated previously. Ball and foot or racket meet just as ball hits ground.

Re: 15 Volleys
Yes, I definitely got that wrong in the way I described it. Still, there are 11 volleys and 1 Maxwell Cornet strike that wasn’t a volley, but the other 3 are classified as self engineered volleys, where an initial touch is taken prior to the strike.

Re: 15 Volleys
I forgot to say, when a player either hits it in the accepted way, or if he takes a second touch when the ball is in the air. I should have read before posting so Martin, I apologise for my sarcastic post especially as what I posted was incorrect.
Re: 15 Volleys
Actually, I think a volley might be when it goes straight over your headIanMcL wrote: ↑Wed Nov 23, 2022 8:03 pm????

Re: 15 Volleys
Are we all agreed on the difference between a lob and a chip. A chip is when you clip the ball from on the ground into the air, as in chipping the ‘keeper, or a lob which is when you try and lift a bouncing ball over the ‘keeper. Obviously it doesn’t have to be a goal attempt but often is. West wood chips the ball into the channels over the heads of opposition defenders.

Should have called it 10 full and half volleys to escape the pedant police.

Re: 15 Volleys
Definitely not, Elwa. There are no half volleys in that selection.

Re: 15 Volleys
A true volley requires connecting with 1/3 of the surface of the ball to impart the correct amount of topspin. And no prior bounce, obviously.
A 'side-foot volley' isn't a volley at all.

Re: 15 Volleys
Regardless of anything else Blakes goal still brings a tear to me eye every time I watch it. I travelled over for that match with a friend who was a Man U supporter and he bought the tickets so ended up in the away end. As luck would have it I was right behind the goal where he scored, I'll never forget that moment.

Re: 15 Volleys
I get all the technical arguments about what is and what isn't a volley, but unless its twatted as hard as possible its not a volley

Re: 15 Volleys
That's the thing about a volley, it's technique and topspin that puts the velocity on the ball. You don't actually have to **** them as hard as you think for it to proper fly.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 9:22 amI get all the technical arguments about what is and what isn't a volley, but unless its twatted as hard as possible its not a volley

Re: 15 Volleys
Not sure about the topspin aspect Doug. I know that Ronaldo and other free-kick specialists have seemingly mastered a new kind of strike partly due to how some balls fly differently to previously but I’ve never knowingly hit a volley with topspin.

Re: 15 Volleys
And the number of commentators who confuse ‘instep’ with the inside of the foot, amazes me.
