Is it any wonder players try to con the officials when cheating is rewarded.

Ronaldo is no more a cheat than Jack Grealish who was looking for a free kick at every point of contact last night against the USA
Re: Ronaldo is a total genius
I feel privileged to have watched us in the 60s and early 70s and I can’t honestly remember any player from any team trying to win a penalty or free kick the way they do nowadays. The amount of cheating is shocking. Ronaldo in this game featured should have been booked for diving.

If you’re referring to me then yes I did see them but both as I recall Lee and the Leeds team were hard individuals who got stuck in, unlike these wimps these days who are looking for the slightest touch to fall over.

Hard individuals? Yes, probably.
But still a bunch of cheats, and some very cowardly.
I still enjoy the footage of Frannie Lee having a go at the so-called hard man Hunter

The sheer jealousy and rage on this thread is a sight to behold . Let’s not forget that cheating in English football in endemic and utterly disgraceful. The CR pen was a reasonable shout in all fairness ,and a soft pen. He can dive alright but has spent most of his career as the most fouled player , and is nowhere near the worst culprit .
FIFA are indeed a steaming pile though .

Rodney March was a brilliant diver he'd get tackled on the half way line yet contrived to end up landing in the box.In the modern game we have Vardy.Wilf,Grealish,Kane and Richarlison are all cheating bxxxxxxs who con refs on a regular basis
Sean Dyche was the only manager to call them out.

Indeed Southgate said he was on to “buy fouls and get us up the pitch.” Horrendous that a manager would dare say that in the dressing room, never mind to the media as the voice of English Football. Dwight wasn't immune to milking fouls either in his last couple if seasons at BFC.
Let's get real the modern game is full of diving, sure it went on back in the 60's and 70's but nowhere close to the extent it happens now at all levels.
However what really irritates me is when players and increasingly managers are gesturing for the opposition to be booked, just leave the reffing to the officials and get on with the game lads eh.

Maybe if Sky stopped encouraging the cult of the manager gesturing and yelling on camera it might be start. It's revolution I know but let's actually show the game and stop focusing on fans in the crowd

Not just Sky that insist on doing this though is it, I've watched several games on BBC and ITV recently where they do precisely the same.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 7:01 pmMaybe if Sky stopped encouraging the cult of the manager gesturing and yelling on camera it might be start. And often they can moss key moments in games when they cut away from the action on the pitch.
Re: Ronaldo is a total genius
In season 71-72, Lee scored 35 goals, 15 of which were pens. "Lee won pen". It was (is still?) a record number of pens in a season.
Most of these were given for alleged fouls on him. A large chunk of those were dives or cons on the ref.
Other cheats at the time included Allan Clarke (Leeds) Osgood (Chelsea) Charlie George (Arsenal) Rodney Marsh (QPR then Man C) - the list goes on.
The aforementioned all conned refs at various times.
Then there were the snidey, sneaky cheats eg Bremner, Hunter, Tommy Smith, Souness etc etc who cheated behind refs' backs with fouls - shirt pulls/ elbows / even punches in the back at corners and free kicks.
Granted there was much less rolling over 3 times as if shot that we get today but to pretend cheating didn't go on then is wrong.
Another factor nowadays is that with every game televised with 15 cameras capturing every incident and replayed ad infinitum, to us as spectators it appears more prevalent. I don't think it is.

Half the Leeds team were hard cases, those that weren’t rolled around like they’d been hit by the proverbial sniper.
People credit the start of the modern cheating with the influx of foreign players like Klinsmann et al, but I remember that Leeds side and Franny Lee all too well.

Hanging a leg out to create contact is CHEATING end of story ...
I might be breaking a taboo but ... Dyche used to say ... how does a finger touching on a shoulder stop an opponents legs working ...
Its rife through football and officials should put a stop to it NOW ... and yes some Burnley players occasionally do it and I hate it ... but its part of the game now ... but I still call it cheating

Why would I prefer WWF? If someone is ill-disciplined enough to be drawn into fouling their opponent then that’s not my problem. It’s hardly disgraceful to send a player on who is very good at retaining possession and inviting fouls from the opposition.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 7:52 pmTake it you prefer WWF to a competitive game of football.

Grealish doesn’t hang a leg out to create contact. He shields the ball and carries it very well. He’s extremely difficult to dispossess and as a result he is fouled, a lot.Bosscat wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 7:57 pmHanging a leg out to create contact is CHEATING end of story ...

It is if that's about the only tactical ploy you have, despite having the pick of a fair percentage of professional football's elite.
Re: Ronaldo is a total genius
I didn't mention Grealish ... I was aiming at the Whining cheating peulant little sh!t Ronaldo ... but there is a reason Grealish is the most fouled player in the Premier League ... he goes down like a sack of sh!t at the slightest contact ... if these players stayed on their feet they would gain a lot more respect etc etc etc ...
I like Grealish in an England shirt but ... he has been very guilty of buying fouls ... its cheating nothing more ... nothing less ...

I don’t doubt that Grealish has dived before, I’m sure almost all professional footballers have. My point is that I don’t think it is a general feature of his play. He wins a lot of free kicks and the vast majority are fouls.

For all Ronaldo’s prolific scoring and records he has never scored a World Cup finals goal anywhere near as good as Messi’s tonight, even when the great man is nowhere near his best.

I find the juxtaposition of some posters interesting: England is pound for pound the best squad there, yet have no problem adopting the hanging on Burnley style of SD for a team that should be footballing lesser mortals to death.

Re: Ronaldo is a total genius
Buying a foul isnt diving or cheating and I think starting with Elwa a few people are completely misunderstanding what the term relates to in the context it was used by Southgate or is used just in general.
Buying a foul comes from the skill of showing just enough of the ball to the opposition player to make him think he can get it and then at the last second taking the ball away as the tackle comes in. As a result the attacker either skips past the player or gets fouled.
When teams are defending well as a unit and not over committing a good tactic if you have a player good enough is to draw a tackle from them and if need be win a foul when they miss the ball and kick you.
Make your own minds up as to whether Grealish dives and goes down to easy but at least try and understand what someone is referring to before starting to call them disgraceful otherwise you just come across as it bit melodramatic and foolish
