We caused them zero problems in open play. We needed penalties to stand a chance and couldn’t put them away.
France created less than us from open play.

Kyle Walker did a great job on Mbappe.
I suspect the French allowed Mbappe to be marked like he was as it freed up so much space for Greizmann.

I think that tactically Southgate is inept, he has an exceptional squad and does not know how to change it up when required, so against tier c we win , against tier b we struggle , and against tier A sides we lose, because at that level you need to get it tactically right and make the big calls in and during the game. That is an area Southgate really struggles with.

All of you who are clutching at straws think about this:
We haven't scored from open play, in fact we couldn't convert both pens.
We are crap, just accept it.
Still haven't beaten a so called elite team away from home since F knows when.
No, we are not a crap team, we are a good team.
But we are not quite good enough.

End of the day around the box they were more decisive, we tried to be solid and it nearly worked again, alas we don't have or choose not to start players who can play that killer ball perchance we lose possession.

A close game but England offered little apart from the penalties.

Thought Kane was poor, as was Rice. Our standout was Saka, not sure why he took him off.

Southgate has been SafeGate but tonight he didn’t do much wrong, maybe should have been more aggressive with his subs after Giroud’s goal. But we weren’t clinical enough despite being the better side.

A shame but reputations hinge on these moments - Kane may be remembered as the guy who won nothing of significance in his career.

What a huge missed opportunity. Kane scores that pen, I fancied us to go all the way.

Yup....well, the second half against Senegal perhaps.

All this whining about the referee is funny to read though 😂I think he had an excellent game and didn't fall for any of England's theatricals.

Kicking myself for breaking my resolve and watching though..utter garbage.

Exactly. Spurs are different they don’t have the players England do. He doesn’t need to worry in this England team. He just needs to play between the widths of the penalty box.

Best game England played up to now, unfortunate with Kane’s second penalty, but ultimately undone again by the immobile central defence. McGuire too late for their second…

It's what he gives you sitting behind Giroud, who plays as a centre forward, same position as H.Kane who has to go searching for the ball

Not Southgates fault "one of the best strikers in the world" balloons a static ball 20 feet over the bar from 12 yards out.

As a wise manager of BFC once said "you've 192 square feet to aim at and all you have to do is miss the goalie"

At least FIFA have denied there is any agenda to this World Cup and confirmed that the Argentina v France final will be referred entirely without bias.

Thank you, he was head and shoulders above anyone else tonight, just his movement creates so much space for Giroud and stretches the pitch, allowing Mbappe and Dembele to stay wide and not go chasing, and we had Defensive Midfielders on the pitch

I'll never knock a team that is brave and has a go, I thought second 45 today we were excellent against the World Champions. Pens get missed, we should have had a 3rd and they should have been down to 10 but hey ho. I'm pleased Southgate set them up to attack.

I’m not impressed by France tonight. They weren’t on fire so I hope Morocco knock them out!
That's what is so disappointing we made France look distinctly average in the 2nd half, yet couldn't convert when it mattered, then when poor defending offered us a lifeline we blew that golden opportunity as well.

Mbappe was fairly quiet and still France found a way to edge a tight game.

Fine margins and all that.
