Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Haven't looked for odds but I think Dean Smith will go sooner rather than later. I have a Norwich-supporting friend who is NOT a kneejerker and stuck by Smith for much longer than most NCFC fans but he feels Smith should go now.
It's been their awful home form that's largely generated the ire of the locals, with only five wins from 12 games. Four home defeats in their last eight.
They face a tough trip to Luton on Boxing Day followed by a visit from The Ince Family on Friday. And then Watford at Carrow Road on 2 January!

I would imagine that he’ll soon be on his way, yes.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Think he may be gone before the New Year. The problem Norwich have is their fans want large scoring wins with exciting football. Smith is old school, get the structure right and grow. Norwich needed a Smith to try to save them… but he didn’t. They have now seen Kompany come in and transform Burnley and want that NOW. He will not be given the time he needs, therefore its like putting off going to the vets.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Definitely "under the microscope". They had a good start to the season but mid-table form only home and away in the last 8 matches. Quite a lot of fans turned against him for results & style of play + he's been a bit confrontational with the fans. If there's no substantial pick up in results over the next month I think he'll go.
Next run of fixtures are:
Luton away
Reading home
Watford home
B******s home in the FA Cup
PNE away
Think he needs to win 2/3 of those at least, though I'm not sure who a replacement might be.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
I think this might have some truth to it, if they didn't need to pay him off I'm sure he'd have been long gone.

I imagine Dyche would be interested (if approached).

I think Norwich would try and tempt someone like Steven Schumacher at Plymouth or Kieran McKenna from rivals Ipswich. 2 Managers who appear to be on the 'up'...rather than Dyche.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
(a) I would have thought if he finds employment we stop paying him.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 25, 2022 12:35 amWhy would they want a manager who
a) they can't afford because Burnley are still paying him so much; or
b) was sacked for allegedly talking to another club while under contract and/or assaulted one of his players?
(b) I don’t know whether that’s true or not but to be honest if another club wants him I really don’t think they’d be interested in any of that.
Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Where do you get b) from? You should be careful what you put on here.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 25, 2022 12:35 amWhy would they want a manager who

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
They aren't too happy with the style of football under Smith, not sure they'd be overjoyed with Dyche.

Beddie, ECC, firthy. Merry Christmas.
Check the "Dyche still on the payroll" thread for full details of the unsubstantiated rumours.

I hope this, posted on the payroll thread clears up any doubt that I was mocking the rumours rather than peddling them.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sat Dec 24, 2022 10:18 pmRight, so we've two supposed acts of gross misconduct doing the rounds. Surely that's enough to tell the tinfoil hat brigade that it's ********. Unless you believe both of them.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Smith could well get his marching orders soon, I had Norwich as strong favourites to win this league, but after looking good a couple of months ago they've really hit the buffers, and even a PO place is by no means assured, given their squad they should be competing with Burnley & Sheff Utd for automatic not scrambling around the play-off fringes.
And for whatever reason DS has never won the Canary fans over, might be style of play more then their results, however with several younger managers coming in and enjoying success namely JDT and VK he's bound to be in the firing line given the pre-season expectations for Norwich.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
They're still 5th in the table.
They've just had several weeks off, so a slow start was potentially going to happen, not every club could come back like we did
It may depend on the next couple of games, Luton and Reading which are winnable as to whether or not he's in charge for the new year though.
Lose them and he could get potted

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
Managing people myself I have noticed a big difference in mentality between my age group and those in their early 20s. I struggle with it. Although people like Dyche and Smith have had success I am wondering if they can connect with players in that age range. Maybe a less old school mentality is needed. A large part of management is understanding those you manage and I'm not sure they can connect with the modern player.

There are older managers who haven't changed a great deal and are still able to the job

If there were any truth to it, there would be grounds for dismissal, so why would we continue to pay him. Sounds obvious it's BS to me.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sun Dec 25, 2022 10:11 amI hope this, posted on the payroll thread clears up any doubt that I was mocking the rumours rather than peddling them.

Re: Next Championship Manager Sacked: Dean Smith?
If you look at the top flight managers they tend to be getting younger. Or at least have a modern outlook. I love Dyche but he is old school. Maybe more suited to working with older players.

Dean Smith led an Aston Villa side with Jack Grealish and Tammy Abraham to 5th in the Championship. I think he's just not a very good manager.
