Considering he'll be 31 by the time next season starts, even if he scores four or five for UTD (doubt he'll get enough game time to breach that) I don't see how his value goes any higher than what we paid for him. If we can bank the money and get another Benson or Zaroury but in a central striker or holding midfielder role I'd do it in a heartbeat.agreenwood wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 8:09 pmI wouldn’t necessarily include an option to buy.
He’ll still only be 30 in May/June and a good spell at United will see his value rise above £10m.

Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
Don't think he's mobile enough for our system, especially in the prem. He's not a total carthorse, but we're most dangerous when Tella/Zaroury/Benson/Brownhill/Jay are rotating positions, and they're all way more agile than him.claretspice wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 8:18 pmI reckon he'd do well in this system next season if he's with us.

Sounds like Conor Roberts touched a nerve somewhere. Can't get the.miss by WW at Villa Park out of my head. As poor as could possibly be.NRC wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 8:07 pmI’d love this to happen, with or without any fee.
His only “crime” was in an interview for his cultural straight-forwardness to not dress up that he could move to a nation’s leading league in order to preserve his World Cup interests.
Mismanaged, misunderstood by our own claret-spectacled bigots, and an amazing opportunity for him to give those of you who gave him crap the opportunity to rub it back in your faces. And I include Roberts in that too.
As a select few have said, he would murder the Jay-Rod/Barnes role in this Kompany team

Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
They can exercise their option to buy. He would then be their future, but contracted player to sell. They could scupper any deal between us and MUFC on the basis of risk, and we can scupper them by not playing ball on the option to buy, which they would then have to take to an arbitration……. So it sounds to me as of we’d both get our heads together to work something out.
An interesting scenario though

Too many on here too quick to condemn him for no reason other than the application of a contractual circumstance, and Roberts was just an unnecessary dick, which again too many on here thought was greatSilkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 8:26 pmSounds like Conor Roberts touched a nerve somewhere. Yes he could have scored.. but it was a great piece of defending (as much as I don’t rate Mings).
If it was Watkins’ shot and Ben Mee had pulled off that block we’d have been saying how he earned us points as opposed to Watkins missing a sitter.

Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
Seems contradictory, but both are true.
To parse it out, Mings was successful at defending the shot he was forced to defend. Weghorst took a shot that was capable of being defended by Mings; it was virtually an open net and he played it low and central because he's not sharp enough to anticipate, let alone react to the body movement the defender. A better forward would have placed the shot higher and to the right because they would have had the picture of play in their head quicker.
So good defending by Mings (did his job), bad reflexes by Weghorst (he did not do his job). Both are true, therefore it's not a lie to say Weghorst blew the best chance he had all game.

This entire season so far feels like I've fallen asleep and woken up in a game of Football Manager 2023 that I've cheated my way through but even I couldn't countenance cheating so much by sending Wout Weghorst to Man Utd, it's too unbelievable even for fantasy football.

Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
Whatever we think, he's scored a goal every other game in a competitive Turkish top flight, and within the last month, scored twice in a World Cup Quarter final, against the eventual winners, and slotted his shootout penalty. He comes from a wealthy family, is currently earning north of £30,000 a week, and now Manchester United have come calling ...

Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
The whole Weghorst saga looks odd to me.
Why was there only a verbal agreement that WW could leave on loan if we were relegated? Why wasn't it contractual? The problem with a verbal agreement is that it may have been devoid of important details and safeguards, like BFC would not be financially damaged by any arrangement. I appreciate Pace is not naive in these matters but that doesn't mean to say it represented good business for BFC.
Perhaps as a consequence of the lack of detail, the loan to Besiktas seemed to be concluded with unnecessary haste. There was about a month to go before the PL was due to start and I am guessing similar timescales for likely destination leagues. Let's not forget, WW has been a 1 goal in 2 striker for a number of years.
If the spirit of the agreement was to provide WW with the best chance of making the Netherlands WC squad, why did the loan need to be a season long loan with no recall option? Are we really saying Besiktas held all the cards? Let's not forget, WW has been a 1 goal in 2 striker for a number of years.
Why did we grant an option, rather than an obligation? This looks all the more bizarre in light of the comments made by the Besiktas owner. He was basically boasting about his track record of not paying full option price and gambling on BFC not securing promotion back to PL. He had no intention of paying the option price, so why did we grant it?
All of this before we even start speculating on the latest bizarre twist with Man Utd showing interest. I appreciate there is much that I don't know about this saga but that doesn't stop the decisions looking very strange.
Comments from Besiktas "chief" (Lancs Live):
"If Burnley make it to the Premier League, they will obviously have a high budget. In this case, they may prefer to use Weghorst. Weghorst may also consider playing in the Premier League a top priority. The specified purchase option is 10 million Euros. Of course, this is a very high price, but this figure may change depending on whether Burnley make it to the Premier League or not. (Rachid) Ghezzal was also worth 15 million Euros, but we got it for three."

Not going to list all of the 'worst misses' suffice to say Jay has scorned several very presentable opportunities over the past couple of seasons none of which were on target and required a flying block from a defender
I know it was a different level and a different era but if we are talking 60 years I've never seen a miss as spectacularly bad as Brendan O'Connell at Bootham Crescent

Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
Weghorst was keen to play in premiership, cannot be blamed for that. Could the loan deal to Besiktas have a clause allowing that deal to end if a premier club showed interest? If it does it would make sense to me on how this could happen?
Re: Weghorst to… Man United?
Good luck to Wout if this happens. Suspect he could do quite well at Man United.
Let's just remember in our judgement of Wout that while the move wasn't a success, he was playing in a poor team, one in which our most successful Prem striker Wood, was also struggling to score goals.
