OT Knee relacement
OT Knee relacement
Has anybody had a knee replacement recently, I have one on friday and apparently now they give you an injection in your spine to numb you from the waste down so you are awake for the op, probably good news for me as I will have the game on my i pad and will be wide awake, but probably be hurting a bit.

You won't feel out, had 2 that way, specialist told anaesthetist to knock me out second time as I wouldn't shut up

If you are having the procedure early in the day there’s every chance you will be able to enjoy the game. It’s the best thing I ever did because all the pain you have been suffering will go away .
It’s a weird experience being awake but you will feel relaxed and there are no ill effects.

I have had both done but under general. My choice, I was offered nerve block but not for me.
Glad I had them replaced though as they were shot!

Thanks for the reply, I have been unable to do anything physical due to the pain, no golf, no bike riding to the pub, even had to give up my part time job as a driver, but as a 70 year old I don't really mind giving up workElizabeth wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 6:37 pmIf you are having the procedure early in the day there’s every chance you will be able to enjoy the game. Re: OT Knee relacement
Father in law had that exact procedure, didn't feel anything. Recovery takes a while though, good luck hope all goes well
Re: OT Knee relacement
I have had my knee replaced a few weeks ago. I had the epidural injection, though they also gave a gas sedative which meant I knew nothing about the actual operation. I had the op at around midday and they had me doing a short walk with a frame by tea time. Walked along the corridors etc the next day and came home the following day, 2 1/2 days in hospital.
You must do the physio's exercises once home for best recover.
Am happy to talk to you about the op etc if you wish.
Good luck with it.

I’m sure being physically fit before the procedure will be of great help with your recovery. I was back driving within a short time

Re: OT Knee relacement
I was at walking football session last week - a new group I've joined up with. I noticed one of the footballers had scar running down his knee, then saw similar on another guy. This time the guy's scar was new, still a little scabbing. I asked them both if this was common among the group. The first guy turned his other knee towards me showing he had scars on both knees. He said he'd had the both done at the same time - aiming to lessen the inconvenience, rather than having to go through rehab twice. These two guys, both late 60s, are decent walking footballers. Won their league last season and will compete in a national walking football trophy this season. Seems getting your knees done is good for walking footballers.
Good luck on Friday.

Re: OT Knee relacement
Had one done 9 years ago, I’m currently on a waiting list for my other but have been told it’s a wait time of around 18/24 months. If you don’t mind me asking how long did you have to wait gsyclaret and BigF from going on the list to the actual operation date.

Best of luck for the operation & it's nice to hear other posters offering reassurances that things are routinely straightforward.
Re: OT Knee relacement
I waited around 2 years but when I went to see the surgeon before christmas he said he would bump me up the the list because it would have been a lot more difficult if had left it another six monthsbeddie wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 7:27 pmHad one done 9 years ago, I’m currently on a waiting list for my other but have been told it’s a wait time of around 18/24 months. Re: OT Knee relacement
I had damaged my knees through playing basketball. (Some time ago I must admit). It got really painful several years ago when I was not living in Burnley but was given various alternatives but no op.
Moved back here 2 years ago and got so fed up waiting, (as it appeared my name had disappeared from the waiting list), that I paid to go privately. Had the op within 8 weeks of the decision.

Re: OT Knee relacement
Thanks gsyclaret. He’s probably right about not leaving it longer. I was told 10 years earlier than when I had it done that it needed replacing. I was 49 years old at the time. I was concerned at the time about if it didn’t work, if I’m honest I was bricking it. Then it got to the point I couldn’t do any Sport, I was literally dragging the keg around. The surgeon told me it was now or never and it would never be brilliant due 5o me leaving it so long. It’s okay but it stiffens up a lot and I often find it stiffens to the point where I struggle to bend it. I can still do the gym, bike and do short walks so not so bad. My other knee has recently shown the first signs of pain I experienced with my replaced knee so I’ve acted straight away, the long waiting list was also part of the reason. Good luck gsy I hope it goes well for you.

Re: OT Knee relacement
The wife has had both her knees replaced...she said the worst thing was the surgeon had to keep dragging her back up the bed as the hammering he was giving her knees was pushing her off the end of the bed ..Good luck rather you than me buddy
Re: OT Knee relacement
Thanks for that
Re: OT Knee relacement
Apparently the authoritis in the knee is primarily caused by the removal of the cartliges, they took both mine out so it's down to to the wear and tear.
Re: OT Knee relacement
You’re right gsy. I had a cartilage removed aged 40, told from aged 49 onwards the knee needed replacing but I foolishly left it until I was aged 59. I stupidly struggled through those 10 years. When the surgeon told me it’s now or never he said once the cartilage was removed it was downhill and that’s why aged 49 I should have had it done. By the way gsy where are you having it done, do you know who the surgeon will be, I’m always interested to research them. Thanks.
Re: OT Knee relacement
I'm having it done here in Guernsey, the surgeon os called George Cooper, the guy I saw before that some 4 years ago was called Benjamin Bradley, i'm sure they are bound to be listed.beddie wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 8:35 pmYou’re right gsy. Re: OT Knee relacement
My mum had hers done before Christmas, she had a peridural but she was out for 5-6 hours, she didn't want to be awake for it. She had it done in Blackpool. She saw the surgeon last week and he said that they'd sort the other knee out in 3 months time. I guess the waiting lists are different in different places.

I had my left knee replaced nearly 13 years ago when I was 49, it took a while to get it back to bending etc. but by far and away the best thing I did. Give yourself time for it to heal, and when you go for a walk, remember you have to get back.

Re: OT Knee relacement
The wife had one knee done at Spire in Blackpool privately and the second one at Burnley General by a surgeon called Dr Zubiary a lovely guy,she said there was no difference at all in the surgery or the recovery ...but the surgeon at Burnley was a topman...I suppose Zubiary might have replaced a few knees of posters on here

Re: OT Knee relacement
I got too big for me boots and found myself up in the middle of Barrowford, I sat on a bench wondering how the crap I could get home!! I eventually did, but every bench had my ass for company whilst I hobbled back slowly. Now I have zero issues, and am both tablet and pain free all these years on.
Re: OT Knee relacement
I've put up for years of a clicking in my knee, which has got worse recently, but an x Ray shows it arthritis. Lately I've started wearing s surgical knee support, as my knee is swollen and painful during the night. Are these signs of the symptoms of those who've had knee replacements.
I'm seeing the Physio following my recent shoulder replacement surgery and thought it might be worth asking him to examine my knee.

Don't put up with all the "this could work theories" I had a knee brace made for me, it didn't work and it made me look like robocop, cost the states of guernsey 400 quid for nothing, get it sorted and be firm.Bfc wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 9:24 pmI've put up for years of a clicking in my knee, which has got worse recently, but an x Ray shows it arthritis. Re: OT Knee relacement
The clicking of the knee doesn’t suggest it’s time for a knee replacement but if you are waking up most nights in pain that does suggest it’s severe . Developing a limp is also a sign that a replacement is necessary.Bfc wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 9:24 pmI've put up for years of a clicking in my knee, which has got worse recently, but an x Ray shows it arthritis. I had arthritis in my knee during 40 years of an active life and continually had to manage swelling and pain. I knew when this had gone beyond the norm
Re: OT Knee relacement
A 70 year old friend of mine had knee replacement in the US and went back to being an ice hockey referee. Not at a professional level to be sure. But he said the pain relief was amazing. Good luck.

Epidural is grand. No recovery ward, straight back to your bed for a butty & cuppa. Had a hip done. Worst thing was the smell of the cement coming out of the caulking gun.

Re: OT Knee relacement
Had mine done, with Epidural.
No problem at all. Looked up once to see my leg pointing almost vertically upward. Never knew it could go that high and had no feeling that it belonged to me at all.
As others have probably said - DO YOUR REHAB EXERCISES!!! - to get the full benefit going forward.

Re: OT Knee relacement
Hi gsyclaret. I had a full knee replacement 6 weeks ago yesterday at Burnley General . Like yours I had the injection in my back to numb my bottom half. It was quite a surreal experience as I could hear them hammering and banging but not feel anything until one particular part of the operation when it felt like they were shortening my spine with a lump hammer. No pain, just a strange juddering sensation. I was in an out in 45 minutes after the lunch-time operation and back on the ward for 2pm.
Six weeks on I've pretty much got full mobility back. Still on painkillers but managing to walk up to a mile at a time with little adverse effect. Best of luck!
