You always get a different vibe from a screen than actually being there.

Can't mark but want to have my say on a few points:

Their Goal
He missed the push in the back on Taylor. Understandable but disappointing all the same.

Barnes' Penalty Appeal
Not a penalty. Got this right.

Barnes' Goal
I think that's level. When did "level is onside" disappear entirely? Is it part of the rules any more? They got this wrong, but linesman is main culprit.

Goal Disallowed for foul on Muric
I think this was incredibly soft and we got away with it.

Brownhill Penalty Appeal
Would have been slightly soft but it's a foul and therefore a penalty. Again, it's one that could go either way.

Tella Penalty Appeal
I was screaming for a penalty but having seen it again, I think he called it right. He could have been booked for this.

Penalty for the FK on Cullen?
Cullen has one foot in the box and one foot out. I think he called this right.

There we have it. My honest opinion. If I'd been at the game and part of the crowd I reckon I'd have entirely different opinions.

He didn't have a great game but he DID retain control and authority much better than almost any ref we've had this season, particularly given it looked a tricky game to referee. In summary, I think the mistakes he made were "honest" ones, if that makes sense.

He was pretty decent. Compared to some refs we've had this season he was pretty good!
Though think the Broanhill one should have been a pen. Clear push.
But it took a replay for me to see the dive.

The ball looked to curl way out of play for their goal from my pov in the Bob Lord.

Was a blatant push on Taylor for their goal and on Brownhill for what should have been a clear penalty.

The positioning could be interesting.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a referee try and do almost the entire game from the centre of the pitch.

As for control…

Barnes was clearly offside, his foot and lower leg being the offending parts of his anatomy. Patently obvious on the replay.

Pretty academic now.

When you can’t control a keeper time wasting and taking throw ins from the right place then there is little hope for anything else.

Not content with having the worst of the English refs, we've mystifyingly imported an even worse one from Oz.

Absolutely clueless, looked like a kid who had been asked to ref his first ever game at the last minute. Hardly moved about the pitch, zero control or authority and some abysmal decision making.

A joke.

Surprised by the low marks, thought he kept control pretty well, particularly compared to some recent refs.

A few questionable big decisions but I don't think any of them were definite enough for them to be a definitive mistake. If we'd lost I wouldn't have been blaming the ref. Should have booked Tells for that blatant dive.

When the right back eventually was booked that should have been his third yellow.

Cullens standing foot was in the penalty area but his kicking foot, when clipped by the defender, was (debatably) just outside the box.
I thought this meant a penalty due to Cullens standing foot but on looking it up in the Laws of the game I could only find the reference re penalties stating that it is a penalty if the offence is committed inside the area so it seems that “the offence” has to be on a part of the body that is inside the area and the standing foot is irrelevant.
I am happy to be corrected but that is now how I understand it - however strange it seems.

I also thought the pushes on Taylor (for the goal) and Brownhill (for the penalty claim) were also clear fouls but over the past couple of years this offence seems to be increasingly ignored by officials. When off-balance, in the air or even unprepared then a nudge, push or barge in the back usually gains significant advantage and with the refs allowing more physicality this year I have become very unclear when it should be given as a foul and when the player offended should “just be stronger”.

Clear foul on Taylor and Brownhill missed but the disallowed goal wasn't remotely controversial. It was a foul and WBA barely complained.

There's contact on Tella but he very much makes the most of it and if you ignore the fact he'd rejected one very good and one possible penalty shout previously, its probably a very good decision from the ref.

I thought Rowls got it pretty much spot on. Only watched on the TV but think some of the low marks given for the ref are ridiculous. Most of his decisions were right.Yes there was a push on Taylor for their goal and a push on Brownhill which, although soft, could have been a penalty. However, both of those may have been down to the view he had. I thought overall he controlled the game well. Having said that, I had texts from family at the game who were absolutely blasting him. It's very different when you're caught up in the atmosphere. :)

Can’t mark but I’ve watched it twice on tv.
They had a corner prior to the one they scored from and Furlong pushed Charlie over to allow Dike to get a header in. This led to the one they scored from where he again pushed Charlie.
I’ve commented previously that pushes in the back are now deemed acceptable and it’s a nonsense. The Brownhill pen shout was the same, Furlong just barging into him when he had no chance to play the ball.
The offside was tight but with the lino on the longside line he would see Barnes first and not the defender. If he had been on the BL line and he’d seen the defender first it would, probably, have been given.
Overall he was average. A shocking first half and an excellent second.

You've got me doubting the rule. I've had a quick look but can't find it. How is it written?

It might well be that he *should* have given a penalty if so much as a toenail is in the box but the foul definitely happened outside the box.

It's where the actual offence took place that matters, and that was outside the box. Definitely not a penalty.

Just a question for everyone. Whats the thoughts on Mulluby and when he shoved Tella over?

It absolutely was a blatant dive by Tella and he should have been carded but the shove after didnt seem much different to what maatsen was sent off for against Blackpool? I might be making something bigger of it than it actually is but just noticed that hasnt been mentioned

Sky said the free kick was correct because the foul was on the line.... doesnt mean they're right however it all matters not when you have a guy that can take free kicks like Twine

I think the elite refs have become so reliant on VAR that they are finding it difficult to ref without it. The main problem last night was the refs positioning, he was often too far from the action and was not positioned well to see many of the key moments like the push on Taylor and Brownhill. the other decisions he did get right though he took an age to blow for the foul on Muric when they headed it out of his hands, think he was waiting for VAR instructions. Better second half performance.
