Current squad v Last Season
Assuming the Foster deal goes through, and McNally goes on loan, here are the 2 squads, side by side
I've had to slightly fudge the positions to make it fit (Taylor for example), but it's difficult to see how we are weaker

Re: Current squad v Last Season
It’s weaker for me in certain positions but completely different football styles now so all irrelevant really

Unless you can tell me how the majority of the players on the right would perform in the Premier League I’m not sure how you can tell!

biggest difference is on the pitch, attendances have somewhat proved the theory that people want to be entertained regardless of the division their team plays in (any team, any club)

Re: Current squad v Last Season
Relegation has worked in our favour. Maybe that's what Everton need as well. Clean sweep and re-build
Re: Current squad v Last Season
Attacking and Midfield wise 100% better, full backs i believe we are better off as well, However in terms of centre back i think we are weaker but only just, i do though believe we lost the best goalkeeper in the country in Nick Pope in my opinion so we are definitely weaker there.
Re: Current squad v Last Season
I'd say it's about level. In some areas we're weaker and in some stronger. I don't see an obvious overall 'winner'. Pope in goal, McNeil through the middle (10), Cornet or Vydra with Zaroury/Benson on either side. Tarky alongside Beyer or THB.

We were shite for most of last season.
It’s hard to imagine we could have been much worse.

Re: Current squad v Last Season
Interesting to look at that.
Weaker in goal but given our style under Kompany you could probably make the case for Muric on balance notwithstanding Pope's brilliance as a keeper.
Weaker at CB I'd say but maybe not by very much
Similar, and definitely not weaker, in midfield
Stronger going forward mainly by virtue of the brilliance of Benson and Zaroury

This is exactly what needs to happen with Everton. The fans won't like it . But....Marney&Mee wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 3:10 pmRelegation has worked in our favour. Maybe that's what Everton need as well. Clean sweep and re-build

Re: Current squad v Last Season
Old stronger in midfield, and generally better cover.
Pope the best keeper, PL central defence better through having lots of experience.

It’s completely irrelevant, that was the Prem this is the Champ. Though I believe if we’d kept everyone from last least ( I know but just for comparison) we’d have also walked this league . That said we wouldn’t have had the sheer dominance and points total and more exciting open style of play . This defence and mid this season would be eaten alive in the prem .
It’s apples and oranges , though I’m very much enjoying the fresh oranges this season .

Re: Current squad v Last Season
it's not a comparison I would make on a player-to-player basis. It's the system played. The SD teams remained in the PL for six seasons, but on a player-to-player basis you'd make the same statement regarding eaten alive, but the system brought a collective strength beyond the individual players.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 5:13 pmIt’s completely irrelevant, that was the Prem this is the Champ. I sense that the squad we currently have would fare just as well in the PL as the SD team, just in a different way. We'd concede more, but we'd score more..... but we'll never know

Re: Current squad v Last Season
Earlier in the season I thought if last season’s team and this season’s team played out a hypothetical match, it’d have 0-0 written all over it.
I’m now almost certain that this season’s team would win convincingly - don’t underestimate just how much confidence plays a part in picking up wins, and last year’s team was devoid of confidence for most of the season.
