Penalty Shoot Outs Question
A question raised in a family discussion
A penalty shoot out stands all square after 10 penalties each. One side had a player sent off during the game so all their available players have now taken a penalty, the other side has a full 11 players available so presumably their least reliable penalty taker has to take theirs.
Does the side with only 10 players have to use a previous taker or does that 11th penalty become null and void? Seems unfair if that side having lost a player to some sort of foul play can use their first choice taker against the other sides worst. Don't know if this has ever happened or what the rule is. Anyone know?

Re: Penalty Shoot Outs Question
I think the team with 11 players nominates a player who does not take a penalty
I believe this is done before the first penalty is taken
I believe this is done before the first penalty is taken

Re: Penalty Shoot Outs Question
This happened in one of the CONCAF World Cup Qualification playoff matches and I was surprised to see that the actual rule is the Manager or one of the coaching staff had to take one

Can't argue with you DA but that is is ridiculous if true. What if the coach was eg Graham Alexander?

Down_Rover has it spot on.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 1:04 pmWhat if it happened to Burnley in the mid 80s? Tommy Cavanagh could barely walk across the pitch in his Man Utd hat, never mind take a penalty kick......
The thought of Cavanagh taking one would have been a major concern I reckon
