and thats why I said early days. With both Al-Dakhil and Ekdal you can see they look good players immediately. I'm just not seeing it yet with Foster.

I agree-yes its harder when you are not playing with the starting 11, and quality does show. Listened to Radio Lancs and Paul Weller was scathing about Bastian-inaccurate 6 yards passes, a lack of urgency, and generally not in touch with his colleagues, and unlike some of the others he has played quite a bit this seasoneastcoastclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 10:18 pmand thats why I said early days. Only going off what I've read but it didn't sound pretty, however I suppose the main thing is we are through to round 5 having navigated a tricky tie.Sheedyclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 10:19 pmMy word that was a tough watch some really poor performances tonight

I was on and we were very poor (by our extremely high standards this season) but tbf Ipswich were excellent at stopping us playing and it couldn't have been a fluke as they did it first game too. Ipswich messed up in the end however because they became increasingly obsessed with wasting time with more than one eye on the extra time and penalties and increasingly less focused on actually trying to win, which I felt they really could have. Our subs definitely changed things too, but we've GOT to be better Saturday and next Tuesday for sure.

Re: Game v Ipswich
Well what i learned tonight or I’m starting to form more conclusions is. :-
Cullen is the heartbeat of this side , gets everything moving forward and with urgency. When he’s out and Jacks on his own we struggle. There 23 had a really good game and pretty much nullified jack.
Bastion - not sure what he brings to side - doesnt really seem to understand his role are position..
Twine needs time to settle made some good runs , has promise but not a first team starter yet.
Taylor , was slow and laborious first half, to be fair there wasn’t a lot of options in terms of movement up front for him.
Churlinov starts brightly for 10 mins and fades.
Tella probably the best first touch i have ever seen from anyone in claret and blue.
Al Dakhil can play and will get better , Beyer is our centre back lynch pin though and walks into our side, ahead of Taylor for me.
Vitinho didn’t have a good game but has done sufficiently previously to just pass this one off.
Foster too early to call, needs time to adjust to pace and shape , hopefully not a hammy and just cramp are a calf strain.
Bailey peacock, a very competent number 2.
Barnes probably playing the best football from him in the last two years.
JBG you can see when he cam on and balls into box why he got contract extension and well deserved.

I know it's not easy getting thrown in for the odd game but Bastien doesn't look up to it. Apart from the free kick against West Brom Twine has shown very little as well.

Poor compared to our usual standards! Too many changes so was very disjointed especially first half but once again we find a way to win.

Re: Game v Ipswich
Thought they were had some passages of play in first half. Second half they increasingly time wasted, espeiclaly the keeper and ref didn't get in top of it all. It was pretty sweet to score in extra time.
We didn't flow, making do many changes probably didn't help but you expect better after a fantastic start.
Onto the next round, hopefully a win as I'm away for the Ewood date

Re: Game v Ipswich
Foster looked better when Cullen and Brownhill came in and we moved the ball quicker and Tella went more central to run off him.eastcoastclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 10:18 pmand thats why I said early days. There were some poor performances tonight. Taylor (first half especially), Maatsen, Vitinhio, Twine, Bastien we’re all off it I thought, though Ipswich were aggressive in their press and tackling to be fair which rocked us at times.

I was on also.
I don’t think Bastien should be anywhere near the starting 11. Looks too heavy and slow to me.
Roberts was poor, Vitinho marginally better.
Worst game I’ve seen from Maatsen.
Really don’t like Taylor at CB.
Twine looks lightweight but probably just needs games.
Relieved we won!

Re: Game v Ipswich
On an Ipswich perspective on that showing will be more than comfortable in the championship next year and i hope they come up. Well drilled and organised and adapt at the dark arts of the game to slow the game down and halt momentum. (Were no diff here). There 23 was excellent but tired ata end. I hope they come up because on the 2 games ive seen they’re a club back on the rise.
To be fair there any following should also be applauded as i suspect they wont get home till after 3am at least. A team with confidence and belief is what i witnessed tonight

Maybe puts paid to the idea that our second eleven would walk the Championship. Good to get through a tricky tie though, and always difficult when there’s so many changes and inevitably less preparation than for a league game.

Really liked Ipswich no 27, a proper old-school CF, but skilful and no slouch for a big lad. Great battle with Al Dakhil.

Foster looked like came off with cramp not a pulled muscle, he certainly was snippered. Probably should have come off sooner as he looked off the pace and adapting to the English game.

Not a lot.JimmyRobbo wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 9:58 pmSo what have we learnt?
Bastien is not going to be a hit?
Twine still needs more time?
Foster has a way to go before he;s ready for English football?
Al D looks a good find?
We still rely on some of the old Prem players for a killing edge?
The players need more game time, they got it.
Bastien coming in for stick again. People forget you can't pass a ball if no one is showing for it. Any one of those players would have benefited from playing amongst the regulars. Playing amongst others needing game time just makes it harder.
VK wasn't surprised it was hard going 1st half, realistically neither should we.
It sounds like Foster is going to take time to adapt to the system, and the tempo required, which makes it better we brought him in now and not the summer.
We need to cut these lads some slack.

Completely agree, they were better than most of the champ teams I've seen. But like many other side's we've played they seemed to lose a bit of belief, the time wasting was appalling also and why the refs don't clamp down on it I'll never know, should have bee at least ten minutes of added time.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 10:38 pmI was on and we were very poor (by our extremely high standards this season) but tbf Ipswich were excellent at stopping us playing and it couldn't have been a fluke as they did it first game too. Ipswich were typical of a league one side
Constant fouling and wining
Charlie Taylor was poor but got better.Lyle made the first goal passing to Nathan Tella
Twine was disappointing. Barnes cameo and Tellas goals lit up a ahite game

Re: Game v Ipswich
I’d suggest slotting in at centre half, as a natural ball playing centre half, is a lot easier in this team than at centre forward. The movement, pressing and positioning is way more involved in that position, in this system. Add to that having to link up with square pegs in round holes like Vitinho on the left wing, rather than the usual Zaroury and Benson etc.eastcoastclaret wrote: ↑Tue Feb 07, 2023 10:18 pmand thats why I said early days. I rarely post about the crowd. In fact last night may even have been my first on the topic for years.
I was just surprised how little slack the players were given by a fair chunk of those around me every time a mistake was made.

Not sure of actual numbers, but it was very impressive I have to say considering the distance involved, it was a Tuesday night, they were serious underdogs and they have a far more important game coming up Saturday.

Similar. Defensively he looked very solid and assured, but his passing was slow and almost always backwards. That wasn't just him though, Taylor was the same and BPF seemed to have to always have to take two touches before playing the ball.Sheedyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 5:57 amI thought he was just ok abit negative for me every pass was backwards
Obviously have to give him time and the signs were very bright.

Re: Game v Ipswich
Think most of the team suffered with that at times. Missed Zaroury and Benson on the wings. Combined with Jay and Barnes and Cullen missing , we can see who are good at getting the ball into play more forward.Sheedyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 5:57 amI thought he was just ok abit negative for me every pass was backwards
He was the best defender on the pitch without a doubt for me.
