Our best Penalty takers
After Ashley Barnes slotted his pen away yesterday, the club have tweeted that's 9 from 9 from the spit for him.
How long until he starts getting talked about as one of our best?
What's the highest amount from a player for us without missing?

I reckon Peter Noble will be way up there. Never missed one did he ?

Graham Alexander is an obvious choice.

Our own Peter Noble ended his career having scored every penalty he took. This record of 28 consecutive penalties is widely believed to be a world record. In 1985 a question about Noble's penalty kicks appeared in the first edition of the popular board game Trivial Pursuit.

Re: Our best Penalty takers
The reaction to Alexander missing that penalty inside Turf Moor was something I remember quite well. Not the usual dismay you normally get when your team misses a penalty, just a complete sense of disbelief.

If this website is to be believed, not only is Barnes up to joint third in the list alongside Leighton James, but there’s a name at the top of the list that I’d never heard of. Andy McCluggage anyone?

I was speaking to Andy McCluggage’s grandson earlier this week and he was rightly proud of his record. I think he’d had contact from BFC at some point showing him to be top of Burnley’s list. Perhaps Noble’s record above included penalties for his previous clubs?

We've had surprisingly few penalties this season given how much we've had the ball in the opposition penalty area

Grezza, Uve and Bash are all excellent.
I think Grezza's was the better technique, always felt confident when he stood forward.

Noble, Alexander and a certain Jimmy Mac. I only ever saw him have one saved by, I think, Hopkinson the Bolton goalkeeper( CT will correct me if I’m wrong hopefully).

Re: Our best Penalty takers
I think that Grezza was the best I've seen, and I saw Noble score lots. I genuinely feel that Grezza didn't know where he was going to put it when he stepped up, so the keeper had no chance of 2nd guessing him.
Barnes penalty at Anfield to win the match was possibly one of the most coolest penalties I saw but for sheer pressure, Grezza's at home to Reading in the play off 1st leg was possibly the most important.

The only one I saw him take live. David James in the nets for Bristol C. and he went for the top bins instead of his normal smash it just of centre.

The above quote is taken from a google search and is of course historical.beeholeclaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 8:42 amOur own Peter Noble ended his career having scored every penalty he took. Harry Kane has scored over 30 penalties for Spurs although he has missed at least 4 more. Burnley obviously don’t get as many penalties as “Big Six Tottenham”.
Noble’s penalties were not all in the top division either.

Re: Our best Penalty takers
We have been blessed with good penalty takers over the last couple of decades. Jayrod and Chris Wood I guess have decent records
On the other hand I am sure Marty Taylor has a good record other than the one he took for us. Proved very costly

He didn't and always looked assured taking them. When he went to Stoke, they'd had a bad run with pens so Sam took one on his debut for them and promptly missed.

Did Gifton Noel Williams take another for us after sending one to the moon ?
Re: Our best Penalty takers
I remember us having Grezza and David Unsworth on the pitch and neither were the designated penalty taker because we still had Andy Gray (who I don't think missed any). I'm pretty sure also had Robbie Blake on the pitch too - late 2007.

I seem to recall Grezza being asked of his technique and saying his technique was just run and kick it as hard as he could, if he didn't know where it was going neither would the keeper!Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 19, 2023 9:42 amGrezza, Uve and Bash are all excellent.

For a player whose technique is rarely considered a strong point (is it 2 goals for us where he's had more than 2 touches including the shot?) Barnes' penalty technique always impresses me. Always very well placed with plenty of pace.

Re: Our best Penalty takers
His technique is baffling to me. Excellent chest control, but his first touch is often better than his second, which is better than his third. Nuisance for defenders because it's quite unusual to see that.

Re: Our best Penalty takers
I would say that Grezza is being economical with the truth there, he always used a straight run up, but then either hit it with his instep, outside of his foot or straight down the middle, impossible to read.spt_claret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 2:01 pmI seem to recall Grezza being asked of his technique and saying his technique was just run and kick it as hard as he could, if he didn't know where it was going neither would the keeper!

Re: Our best Penalty takers
I recall he said that he made his mind up before he stepped up, and never changed his mind. He also practiced into an empty net, because of he hit it right the goalkeeper was irrelevant.spt_claret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 2:01 pmI seem to recall Grezza being asked of his technique and saying his technique was just run and kick it as hard as he could, if he didn't know where it was going neither would the keeper!

Maybe a bit unfair on Barnes, but I always get the impression he's almost too daft to feel the pressure of taking a penalty.
Some players looks slightly uneasy stepping up. He never does .
