Friday night in Burnley

Post by Neil » Mon Feb 20, 2023 6:03 pm

Heading to Burnley for the weekend for my first home game in years. Was just after some recommendations for where to have a drink on Friday night.
Just be a lone saddo and I'm in my 40s. I prefer an older crowd but a cool older crowd and not keen on pubs like the Rovers Return.
Any suggestions?

Started at the Circ, then walked down the hill to the Bridge. You pass at least 2 bars in between, usually live music in the Loom from 9pm on a Friday.

Other side of town Cork House is OK, Cross Keys, Empire Theatre bar (Thai bar) will be OK early but not mega busy and bars around Hammerton/Hargreaves Street get busier late on.

I'd go with the top run, then if you get the taste walk through Charter walk towards Williams Bar and the late night bars.

Food available at Loom, Empire and pretty certain Cork House. Few options for food in town if you want them

I'd head to the Bridge and then up Bank parade. The loom will probably have a band on and the circ is definitely worth a look if you've never been before.

The circ has 3 bars on bank parade. The top one is the retro bar with great ales and quirky interior and art deco. The one next door is the lounge , like a small Cabaret club, then the unit at the bottom is a massive space for live bands that’s open Saturdays and Sundays. The loom do great pizzas and have bands on too, and the bridge is a cracking pub for all sorts of ales and also do good food. Bank parade is the best place in Burnley at the minute and has a better vibe than the town centre.

Tbf, I went up around 12 months ago and it was fine, no way near as bad as being made out.

Most folk that drink in town pubs aren’t snobs, they tend to stay in city’s.

I think all the pubs mentioned such as Bridge Bier Huis, The Loom, Cork House, Williams and the Circ bars are all privately owned. Been them all bar the Circ and all are well run establishments who try their best to provide good beer, food and live entertainment.
The costs to provide all this at the moment with the current heating and lighting costs must be quite testing to any business.
I would say go and support your local bars whether in Burnley or Colne- they need it. As they say Keep it Local.
Last things they need is the cheap jibes and sniping.
Hope your Friday goes well!
Let us know how it went. UTC

It's a better night out up Colne than Burnley if you're over 30, it isn't full of Two can Van Dammes wanting to fight you like 99% of Burnley pub's on a night out, Burnley is full of kids out their head with god knows what, I've switched to Colne over ten years ago and haven't see one single fight or trouble in all that time.

The bars up Bank parade are a good addition to town. Problem for me with Burnley is I can't help but compare it to how good it used to be. When you're in town at 11 pm on a Friday or Saturday and it's like a ghost town it's just depressing.

I agree jrgbfc it's hard not to compare.

Reference to Two can Van Dammes, you'll know the Bank Parade bars have changed when they need bouncers. The fact they don't, indicates they're not having the same problems as those in town

Try the Crow Wood triangle

Start in the Lounge, then head upstairs to Bertram's then finish off in Wilfred's. Food amazing and ambience usually top class.

Whenever someone asks for advice on where to go in Burnley, posters on here can't wait to tell them it's crap and to go somewhere else.

This is half they problem and why it won't improve the area.

It's sad.

Nothing wrong with that but if you haven't got any good places in Burnley to try then just don't comment.

And then hopefully more businesses in Burnley survive.

Not just aimed at you by the way. Many threads like this when people ask for Curry places in Burnley. Someone will mention Manchester or Bradford.

Plenty of sensible suggestions tbf. But for a town the size of Burnley there's no denying the nightlife has gone downhill massively.

Where’s best to go in Colne on Fridays then? Would want pubs that are busy and possibly a live music bar?

Friday's can be a bit hit and miss tbh! Spoons is always busy, then if you like real ale you've got 2 micro brewery's pretty much across the road, then can walk down to the Lord Rodney where you'll often get a band on.
Or down the bottom end you've got the Crown, Tubbs and Riley's. Crown has a band on this Friday actually, and you might get a bit of an acoustic set at Riley's.

Seems like you've had a good few suggestions of pubs to go to in the evening but if you are hungry when you arrive in Burnley I strongly reccomend goint to Sycamore Farm for some food. Its a bit out of town but well worth it as the food is second to none.

Skipton, Halifax? Also places like Clitheroe and Hebden Bridge prove that plenty of people are still going out drinking locally.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Last time I stayed in Burnley was at the Sparrowhawk so I've no idea what the pubs are like now. I live in Sunderland (well, just outside now) which is obviously a city and bigger than Burnley and the nightlife is really poor here now. Would say it was about ten years ago the decline started. Night and day compared to the nineties when I was in my 20s when every bar was heaving. Sad to see.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the weekend. Anyone fancy a pint😁

Definitely start at the bridge and work your way up to loom and circ bars. Just look for a massive Russian military tank on bank parade 🤣

There's a band on at the loom bar this Friday classic rock band called marching bones if you like that sort of thing.

Best local band for me are strange brew, they play floyd (dark side and wish you were here tracks)led zep and the doors. They are playing at the venue in Colne March 11th
