Youth cup final second leg 1968 stood in the paddock 2-0 win after loosing the first leg 2-1, memory a bit hazy but I think a guy called David Hartley scored both goals. Team included Mick Doc,Dave Thomas, Steve Kindon

Re: My first Burnley game ....
Yes, we were living in Tunbridge Wells then, I was 11. I was born in Berkhamsted, Herts and moved around with Dad's work, firstly Dublin, then Nottingham ( his home town ) followed by Tunbridge Wells. At that time he was driving down from Accrington to Kent every Friday, spending 36 hours with us, and driving back up Sunday after lunch, a 562 mile round trip. He did this for 6 months. Having lost his Dad during WW2 aged 7, he was determined to be the " best " he could be, and took me to games in London occasionally. The 11 year old boy fell in love with the " V " shirts of Burnley and that was that ... we moved to Clitheroe a few weeks later ! I was playing sport on Saturdays, so it was another 3 years before I first visited Turf Moor, to watch Dad's team, Notts County ....Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 10:33 amIs there any reason you went to an away game in London, before waiting 3 years to go on the Turf?
I can't imagine West Ham away in the 70s was the first choice for parents taking kids on?
He's 87 now, suffering from vascular dementia, but I got a " golden ticket " in life's lottery with the parents I had. I wish everyone was so fortunate

1967, Southampton 4 Burnley 0. Lived in Hampshire, lost my dad in 1966 so went on my own, aged 12. Stood in the Milton road end behind the goal with all the saints fans. One year later stood on a side stand right at the front and saw us draw 2-2. Remember asking John Angus who scored one of of our goals as he took a throw in right in front of me. A much better experience second time round!

Boxing Day, 1961, against Sheffield Wednesday. Taken by my grandfather and we won comfortably, despite Wednesday having the England goalkeeper at the time. The beginning of a lifetime's addiction which has felt sometimes to have been more of an affliction!

March 28th 1964 -Burnley 1 Stoke 0 (Alex Elder scored)
Jimmy Mac's 1st visit back after his move - embarrassed to say I wasn't impressed by him.
As an 11 year old I went with a mate from junior school on Wild's bus from Barlick. Told my mum I was going with a mate and he told his parents similar. Turns out both sets of parents thought we were going with the others parents.
Was grateful to some oldish guys on the bus who told us where to go and where to catch the bus on the way back.
A while before I went again!

October 1973 Burnley 2 QPR 1. I was 8 years old and oined my dad to death to take me on t'Turf for the first time. Until very recently this was the only match I'd ever been on with him. My parents came to stay in Suffolk the weekend of the Tractor Girls game so I repaid the debt 50 years later! Dread to think how much I've spent following The Clarets in those 50 years!

Tottenham 4 Burnley 3 FA Cup Third Round 1965/66. 2-0 up, then 3-2 up at half-time. Irvine and Gilzean hattricks.
First on the Turf was Burnley 0 Arsenal 1 1969/70. An evening match. I went up with Arsenal supporters on their coach.
First reserve match: Burnley 4 Bolton 0 1977-78 - David Loggie hattrick - I like my hattricks. After that we went to Bolton to see the first team win 2-1. A pretty good day!

Burnley 7 Spurs 2 in 1964. I was definitely at this game aged six, but I'm not sure it was my first. I'd like to think so, as it was quite the debut. I thought Jimmy Greaves scored both their goals but when I checked he scored one and Cliff Jones the other.

12th December 1978
2nd leg of Anglo Scottish cup final v Oldham
We lost 1-0 but had thrashed them in the first leg at their place.
My only real memory of the game was Peter Noble doing a lap of honour with the cup.
I was stood on the longside.
Just had a quick look back on that cup run and only just spotted that we beat Celtic in the quarter finals. For many years I thought that was the semi final and hadn’t realised it was Mansfield we beat in the semis.

2nd Nov 63: Stoke 4 Burnley 4
Gordon Harris scored 2 late goals to earn us a draw..
You don't see many 4-4 draws and for us to come back from 3-0 at half time was some achievement. The only other time I've seen us come back from 3-0 down at half time was Chelsea away possibly in 73-74 when we got a 3-3 draw. I think that my Dad and I were the only Clarets in the ground that night jumping around when our equaliser went in. Getting out alive was our only issue

Burnley 2 QPR 1 May 1983. Two goals for Terry Donavon. I've recently purchased the programme for posterity. It was a rearranged game so the programme came with a sheet, making them harder to find. 40 years ago this year.

I was 65 and it was my first visit to England during.the foorball season. I saw the next game vs Wolves as well. My most memorable lesson from those games was that Burnley is much colder than my home city Bergen! I came back in the autumn, and four years later I bought a season ticket, which I still renew

Re: My first Burnley game ....
Mists of time but about 56/57, dad took me on the long side just behind the enclosure kids could transfer to for a few pence. His mates were all Poles from ww2 having found jobs in mining and weaving in our towns. I had to ask which colours Burnley were playing in. The teams that stuck in my head were Arsenal and Aston Villa. Some of those guys had had a hard time, dad was in a Siberian prison camp and later was at Monte Casino where he was wounded. Jimmy Mac became everything to me as I grew up and I remember a sudden hush when he got the ball, it was the expectancy of something good may happen, Still going on!
