A promotion goalscoring record to be beaten

Post by ClaretTony » Wed Mar 01, 2023 10:14 am

Over the years I've been going on the Turf, I've witnessed four seasons when we've won promotion to the top flight and I'm sure this season will be number five.

I suspect that we will also score more goals this season than we did in any of the four previous promotions which incredibly all brought the same number of goals.

1972/73 - 72 goals scored (35 conceded)
2008/09 - 72 goals scored (60 conceded)
2013/14 - 72 goals scored (37 conceded)
2015/16 - 72 goals scored (35 conceded)

To date, we've scored 68 and I very much doubt we will only score four times in the remaining twelve games.

I'm not sure it will be my 5th time seeing us promoted....I'm absolutely certain.

They've all been brilliant seasons in different ways but it's remarkable that in the previous four we've scored exactly the same number of goals.

It's also possible we could conceive the fewest.
On current form we would conceive 37.88, but given that 8 of the 28 we have let in came in two games and we have improved drastically since, there's certainly a chance we could do it.

Quite a remarkable statistic and got me contemplating the various promotions which led me to this visual representation of league performance. As far as football story's are concerned, the journey from around our Division One title win to now is one heck of a tale. Those lucky enough to have experienced it all have had quite the supporters life

We’ll only conceive a lot if we get properly screwed a few times between now and the end of the season. Will see the benefits in about nine months time though.

This is my 61st year of adopting Burnley as my team. Top to bottom, avoiding the trap door and back again. It really is a remarkable story. Wet day on open terraces to a cup final win at Wembley in 61 years! Can't wait!

My journey starts just after the top of that peak before the massive dip to the bottom so that was all I knew for years. Makes the last decade even more incredible.

My first game was 1986 so it's mainly been an upward trajectory for me.

Scary to think we were only one goal away from dropping out of the league in '87 and one goal from dropping back into the fourth tier in '98.

It's a remarkable stat CT has uncovered about the goals.

For those of us who started in '86, it's been quite the progression. Didn't feel like it for large chunks of that time though.

Looking at the image that 4:20 posted, the descent to the bottom was so quick. I started watching the Clarets in the mid-80s so didn't really know anything other than lower league football until the turn of this century. It’s taken a while to get back to where we are but it’s been a great ride and I’m loving it at the minute!

I knew about the most recent three but was astonished when I checked 1972/73 and it was the same number, albeit from four less games.

I started in 82/3 so caught the really **** years. Amazed that I wasn’t put off but it shows that perseverance does pay off.

We are a small but quite remarkable club. To achieve what we have in history (and indeed in more modern times, punching well above our weight) is something we should all be really proud of.

Been supporting since 1960 seen the lows of the old 4th division etc. last few years have certainly been interesting - for a small town club we have done really well.

My first game was in ‘75 when the good times were well and truly over. We got relegated from the top tier at the end of my first season and just 11 years later we were staring oblivion in the face at the bottom of the fourth.

I'm fortunately young enough to have only fanatically supported Burnley since 2001 (in terms of attending games) so have incredibly seen little old Burnley promoted 3 of those 4 times.
