Think this was the game where we were 0-1 down then Frank Casper got sent off for thumping Francis Burns. Down to 10 men and we went on to win the game.

Re: Turf Moor of old
I mentioned that goal in the recent George Best thread. I actually thought he was a lot nearer the goalline than the photo shows.
Re: Turf Moor of old
This photo and game were discussed on a Turf photos thread very recently. Somebody posted a pic of Frank walking off & asked if he was being subbed or sent off. I confirmed his dismissal for taking a swing at Burns. Andy Lochhead had to go off after colliding with a post but we still came back to win.
Re: Turf Moor of old
The goal came about because of a bad error by Colin Waldron who left Harry Thomson exposed with a very short back pass.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 4:40 pmI mentioned that goal in the recent George Best thread. I actually thought he was a lot nearer the goalline than the photo shows.

Great to see a packed old Turf Moor. I'd forgotten about this match.

[/was only talking about this game at the weekend Francis Burns had been hacking Frank all of the game so Frank jabbed him as Burns was just getting up off the ground, the ref had to chase Frank who had already trotted up to the tunnel. I think O'Neill and young Martin Dobson scored.

Blimey, a Brian O'Neil and Martin Dobson midfield.

Or was Dobson still a striker at that time?

Re: Turf Moor of old
Think it was the start of the next season he played in midfield. A number of injuries led to us introducing some players from the successful youth team v West Ham at home and a very good League Cup run followed ending with the semi defeat at the Hawthorns v Swindon.
Man Utd. did have a forward line that day that included Best, Law, Charlton and Kidd.

I think the lad's name was Paul Lonsdale. He was mascot for about 3 seasons in the 1960s. He went on to be an accountant.

What an iconic photo.
Denis Law.
No badge on the Man U kit, similar white shorts and socks as Burnley and no segregation in the crowd.
The state of the pitch.

Re: Turf Moor of old
On the Facebook Post a woman says her Dad played in that game for Burnley and "marked George Best". So there's every chance it is Les. Stood on the corner of the Longside and Bee Hole for this game. Clearly remember Dobbo's winner.

Best gave Les the runaround in the 1st half but once Les got to grips with him we got on top & O'Neil equalised with a worldy before Dobo got the winner.

Brian O'Neil scored a 'worldy' seven months later against them at Turf Moor in the last minute to give us a 1-0 win. Just lost 7-0 to Spurs the week before.

Remember that game as well against the European Champions Best, Law, Charlton Kidd etc. After we scored Utd poured down the other end and won a corner which Best put straight behind the goal. Oh how we laughed.....Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 3:30 pm

Re: Turf Moor of old
Indeed he did but I think you'll fine the goal he scored in the game being discussed here was pretty special too. In fact Keith McNee described it thus in his match report; '..after a centre from the left by Ralph Coates the ball came to O'Neil, some 25 yards from goal. Bang...a terrific shot past the goalkeeper's left hand and into the net via the woodwork.'Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 3:30 pmBrian O'Neil scored a 'worldy' seven months later against them at Turf Moor in the last minute to give us a 1-0 win. Re: Turf Moor of old
Rod Jones seemed a good keeper, but barely featured, then only had 19 games in two years at Rochdale. I thought someone said Dobson scored in this match. Was he the substitute?Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 7:42 pmHe didn’t play that game. He was transferred to PNE the following month.

Re: Turf Moor of old
Some absolutely cracking photos there Guitargeorge- real gems. Never seen them before.
Re: Turf Moor of old
Bob Lord must have had turnstiles that didn't register people, when you look at the crowd and then the official attendance. You couldn't get many more in there but the ground officially held over 40,000 and the attendance was 32,000
Re: Turf Moor of old
Are you talking about the Denis Law/mascot photo? Denis Law is not mentioned on the programme team lists either? Of course there were often late corrections.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 7:42 pmHe didn’t play that game. He was transferred to PNE the following month.

Re: Turf Moor of old
Yes. There was chat higher up referring to Alex Elder and Les Latcham, in the background. I thought you were chipping in on that.
Re: Turf Moor of old
It was a certainly an action packed 10 minute 2nd half spell - Dobo replaced Lochhead on the hour after Andy collided with a post, 2 minutes later O'Neil equalised and 5 minutes after that Dobo got the winner - just 3 minutes before Casper got sent off leaving us to play the last 20 minutes with 10 men.
Re: Turf Moor of old
Nobby Stiles & Denis Law replaced Fitzpatrick & Herd from the United team listed in the programme - Fitzpatrick was an unused sub.

Re: Turf Moor of old
There's always a reason......this time it's because the CF terracing was closed for the final time on the 30.Dec.'67 some seven weeks before this game against Man Utd........on that basis the official attendance of 32,165 seems realistic enough.
As for the player in the background on the Denis Law photo.......Is it Sneckham ?.......Some uncertainty, for me.

Worth another mention for that game against Everton in Dec.'67......Was that a special occasion or what ?......the finest experience ever in the CFS that day.

As was always the case, Everton fans attempted to "move" us onto the Longside, but on this occasion it was never going to happen........Their fans did not take kindly to the final result and the winner from Willie Morgan was just a bit special, on a very special day.

Re: Turf Moor of old
The remarkable thing about the photo in the OP is that, in terms of the background, it could have been taken in any of the previous three, four, five decades.......Nothing changes, the tapering off of the Bee Hole End and the original Brunshaw Road stand with the Enclosure in front.
Then it all happens......In 1970 the Bee Hole End is extended backwards with a view of increasing capacity, the last game for the Brunshaw Road stand is 23.April'69 against Sunderland and the CF terracing is demolished.
Bob Lord's vision for a new Turf Moor begins to take shape.

Jones played his only game of the season the previous week away to Fulham.
Harry Thomson must have recovered and played this match.

Programmes rarely got the teams spot on. They essentially guessed the line ups based on the last starting eleven (in a day and age where starting elevens only changed due to injury). If Jones played the week before it’d explain his appearance in the United programme.claret4blue wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 1:29 pmTrevor when is this programme from ?
