Black and white thrush
Black and white thrush
Walking the dog in Ightenhill Park this afternoon, spotted a black and white thrush like bird about the size of a blackbird. Dark plumage on its back and head. Light coloured throat and breast with dark spots. I thought maybe a mistle thrush at fieldfare. Never seen one like it before. Too quick to get a picture.

Whenever I’ve seen thrush it’s always been red and spotty
Re: Black and white thrush
We had a black and whit bird that looked remarkably like a Blackbird (or Thrush) a few years ago visiting the garden ... remember we looked it up and this was online ...Chobulous wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 7:27 pmWalking the dog in Ightenhill Park this afternoon, spotted a black and white thrush like bird about the size of a blackbird. Re: Black and white thrush
No red patch on its back so not a woodpecker, wrong shaped head as well I think the genetic mutation is best bet

There was was a white tailed sea eagle pictured over Burnley a couple of weeks ago.
Re: Black and white thrush
Could it possibly be a Missle thrush or Song thrush both pretty distinctive and can be found up Ightenhill Park?
Re: Black and white thrush
I saw (or initially heard, they were making a heck of a din) a couple of oystercatchers on the roof of a factory in Keighley on Sunday. Presumably mating calls, though I can't imagine there were too many other oystercatchers in the area to be rivals. If they're living round here, they must be able to manage on more than just oysters!

Oystercatchers are here all year round. You hear them before you see them. They are just a very vocal bird. Very distinctive call.dsr wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 8:59 pmI saw (or initially heard, they were making a heck of a din) a couple of oystercatchers on the roof of a factory in Keighley on Sunday. Re: Black and white thrush
Chobulous - I saw a flock of ring ouzel round about this time last year (maybe a few weeks later than this). We live in SW Scotland.
I asked the same question because they were definitely thrush sized or slightly bigger and making a strange call that I had not heard before. Lots of theories locally and lots of people saying ring ouzel/ not ring ouzel, but turns out they seem to migrate north early in the new year and are more common than people assume. People were saying that they prefer higher ground but the ones I saw were in a woodland close to a coastal plain.

Re: Black and white thrush
I saw a Ring Ouzel in Richmond about 20 years ago, on the 20th January.
I didn't recognise it at all, they have a winter plumage that leaves the whole body with scalloped feathers, and only a hint of the ring.
I described it to the local bird recorder who put me right.
I would think by March they will probably look more like the photo.
Re: Black and white thrush
There used to be loads of Oystercatchers by the Calder around Altham. Really distinctive red/orange beak

They are common in the higher moorlands, near footpaths or rills.

That was the thing that convinced me they were ring ouzel.

They sometimes nest on large flat roofs, particularly if they have gravel.dsr wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 8:59 pmI saw (or initially heard, they were making a heck of a din) a couple of oystercatchers on the roof of a factory in Keighley on Sunday. Re: Black and white thrush
Ouzels are relatively common in these parts but they are definitively moorland birds, very rarely seen at low level. They're also very shy, unlike our familiar thrushes and blackbirds.

Re: Black and white thrush
Another birdie query.
We live on the coast (Solway) but have a house, bushes and a tree between us and the beach. Every night (in the middle of the night) we hear a bird chittering in the tree and bushes - I have seen it on the very odd occassion and it is quite small. I had presumed it was a little owl but every vid clip and sound file of the little owl has a hoot or a screech. This never does but it is very active and moves about the bushes from area to area as though hunting. Any ideas?
Like I say the sound is more of a chattering rattly sound. Its definitely nocturnal and not a song/garden bird.

I know from night fishing that Sedge Warblers can chatter on all night, but they won't be here yet, late spring arrivals.Guller Bull wrote: ↑Wed Mar 08, 2023 4:40 pmAnother birdie query.

I was in Sharm el Sheik a few years ago sunning myself lying on my stomach doing my back. When I turned over there were 3 vultures circling overhead. Trust me Carl I know the difference between mutated blackbirds and vultures

Re: Black and white thrush
It's just a local Burnley group.
Not sure It's right to share from a private group then or without the photographers permission.
But they say it's quite a common site in the park.
