That feeling

Post by Vegas Claret » Sat Apr 08, 2023 12:27 pm

it's an intangible thing, I just can't describe it, but this season and last night gave me the same feeling as I had at York for the first time since that night. All the other promotions have been great (and fully celebrated!!) but this just seems that bit special to me

anyone else ?

Agree, very special, for me it was because of the manner, all things considered in which we’ve done it. Quite remarkable really.

Not for me. Apart from 1960 at Maine Road the real high point had to be the unexpected promotion back to the big time under Coyle never ever expected us to hit the big time again
But 2013-14, 14-16 and this season are pretty high up as never expected the promotions when they occurred. 13-14 one of the favourites to go down
14-16 unlikely to bounce back but a fair chances as we kept the manager and most of the squad. This season no chance, could go down again-new manager selling off "the silver" complete rebuild which rarely works straight away. So this season quite a shock but what was achieved last night was going to occur at some stage since Xmas really-so the other seasons take the wow
This season it has been wow bloody wow but without the massive boost at the end because we all knew it was going to happen even if the fat lady was still going through the scales and not singing

Very special season. Totally surpassed my expectations. Kompany has been outstanding. 2008/09 was probably even more remarkable. The last 15 years as a Burnley supporter have been unbelievable.

I'd say the last 23 since the promotion season 1999-2000 or is that 24?

Sobering thoughts:
Football back to stupid prices.
Ridiculous kick off times.
VAR.
Otherwise what a fabulous day. At my caravan in the lakes sitting in the sun and thinking what a great time to be a Claret.

We’ve been fairly spoilt as Clarets fans over the last 10-15 years, but nothing has topped our play off win in 2009 for me (I’m 41 years old for reference)

Yes, this is a greater achievement with the manner in which we’ve done it (as were Dyche’s promotions) but it really did come out of the blue and was the first time I’d been able to see our club in the top flight, something I thought may never happen in my lifetime.

I think the 2009 was more special as we hadn't played top level football for decades.

I’ve found the kick off times more all over the place in the Championship. Especially because we’re the team the punters want to see. And I wouldn’t be surprised if VAR is in the Championship next season.

4 promotions in recent years, 2009, 2014, 2016.2023, and only one of those (2016) was really expected, all the others have came out of the blue (2009), or against the odds 2014, 2023.

All were memorable for various reasons, however this one has been a statement promotion as we've breezed back to the PL, and almost certainly the title, when in the summer we weren't sure what the pending season held following all the departures.

However even the most optimistic of Burnley fans couldn't have hoped for this scenario.

Absolute turning point for our club. Hard to think where we'd have been without Coyle masterminding promotion.

I claim all of the credit for our pre-season in the Town of Cary, North Carolina. This place is just magic…. And it rubbed off on them 8-)

That’s the ninth promotion I’ve experienced with the Clarets. All have different special memories such as the wonderful matchdays with my dad during 72-73, York in 92 when I was living in York, the old Wembley win in 94, the new Wembley win in 2009 when I never imagined I would ever see the lads in the top flight again – but age and distance doesn’t dim the passion. It seems that the club took a step back with relegation in order to completely reset and take many steps forward. Great achievements to do what we have in the last few years, yet this just feels like the club has transformed and re-energized itself this time. Thoroughly enjoying soaking up all the highlights and reports :D

That 72-73 was a sensational season as I went to lots of games that season and was of an age where football was at the centre of my world - was living in Fleetwood so Blackpool were my big rivals because of friends and the 2-1 Boxing Day win at Bloomfield Road remains one of my favourite ever games.
Now, even sitting 3,000 miles away and only able to watch on TV, the feeling and excitement over the way we have played this year has made me so proud of the team.

My nephew is 9 and only “seen” 2 years of us out of the top league, along with 3 decent England tournaments

It’s not fair these young fans are getting it easy when us 30-50yr olds had to put up with so much pain and heartache

Exactly the same for me as I am 6,000 miles away. Blackpool were the local rivals for you; for me, Leeds were due to where I was brought up. I was at the Blackpool game that day. What a huge following.

Very much this ^^^

For several reasons...
I never thought I'd be alive to see us at the top table.
I'd seen us at all the lower ones right to the brink.
Frozen my bits off on midweek night games - away games (Oldham away one year was brutal we walked back into Manchester soaked in a blizzard due to bus being full).
So many games all with little interst in the top flight.

Then a year that really hurt - missing the playoffs last game on GD under Stan when I had started to believe we might get there...

In 2009 I was so ill that a friend (Man U Fan) insisted on driving 40 miles and actually carried me into his car to watch the Play Off Final in my local half a mile away. We won. That team. That Day. That Pal.

It's close they are all great - but Wade's goal, the pure grit on show that day made me so proud - The Game Changed

Even in 2016 it was slightly against the odds. We knew better of course but I backed us at around 25-1 to win the championship that season. We were not the favourites, that’s for sure.

Derby, Middlesbrough and Brighton were spending more than us.

Derby, for example, had the buying power to steal our club captain in pre-season.

Is it not cheaper watch football away from home in the PL due to the £25 ticket price cap?

2 big differences in 2016 were we retained SD a proven promotion winner, and also most of our PL squad.

We were among the fancied sides certainly in the top 3 or 4 with the bookies as I recall. You did well getting 25-1.

This time we didn't have SD and the squad underwent a big revamp.

Weren't Derby spending beyond their means back then, hence why they ended up in a morass of debt.

Correct about derby and that spending helped make them favourites with Brighton, I think.

There was also Leeds, forest and wolves with large fan bases. That helped skew the odds in our favour as they all back their own side.

None of them were anywhere close.

I think I backed us before we’d signed anybody (definitely before Barton and Gray arrived) and from memory we were about 6th favourite which I thought generous.

Sean Dyche did the rest! 😜

Nothing will beat York,Wembley came close. Scunthorpe was next, Dyche's first promotion, then second one then this as it has felt inevitable. I've enjoyed this season most though for tge sheer quality.

15/16 was a surprise to me as we weren't even top 6 in December. We'd been struggling to replace the Ings/Vokes/Tripper dynamic, but Dyche bringing in Lowton and moving Mee inside was the masterstroke.

Early 2000's I remember playing against 'yoyo clubs' like West Brom and dreaming one day we might have a taste of that again. In 2008/09 I thought that was it, our year in the sun and I was happy with that. Not once did I ever envisage what has happened since then.

We must of course applaud those who have implemented the strategy at the club during this time, but I can't help but feel everyone associated with Burnley FC including the fans and those running the club have been very fortunate with how the last two managerial appointments have turned out.

UTC and long may our fortune continue.

If you’d taken a box pops of Burnley fans at 6pm on 26th December 2015 you wouldn’t have found much positivity.

Ditto for straight after the Sheffield United away game this season.

Indeed both awful at the time, but in hindsight those heavy defeats were a blessing in disguise.

2009 for me, as others have mentioned above, a 34 year wait, the tension of the play offs, and it wasn’t looking good until Bikey lost it. Waiting for the final. The final itself when Mr Dean could have given a couple of penalties fortunately Blackwell had spent the whole week impugning his integrity. We just couldn’t get that second goal.

The final whistle. A mixture of relief and ecstasy.

it's an intangible thing, I just can't describe it, but this season and last night gave me the same feeling as I had at York for the first time since that night. All the other promotions have been great (and fully celebrated!!) but this just seems that bit special to me

anyone else ?
I agree, although the massive gap has meant very little jeopardy which tempers the elation a little bit. I am more appreciative recognising this is a special team and season than elated at what has been for a while an inevitable promotion.

Don't know about anyone else but it's been such a joy to watch games this season where we are basically toying with the opposition. Fans come to the Turf with a bit of bravado which suddenly turns to silence when they realise how good we are.

I dragged my son up to the Turf from the South coast for the last match last season. Not because I thought we might pull off the great escape but because I thought it might be a very long time before he would have the chance to see a top flight match in Burnley. I really thought we would struggle to get up again. There were so many players out of contract or wanting away that I thought we would struggle to attract a manager, then struggle to get players in, then struggle to get a team to gel with so many new faces that I genuinely feared dropping down again. This season has been such a pleasant surprise. VK was an inspired signing and he has put together one hell of a team. He has found some real gems but more than that he has moulded them into a sum that is greater than their parts. They appear to have a genuine love of the club that I didn't expect to see in a team from so many different countries, most of whom I assume couldn't have pointed to Burnley on a map this time last year.

I think each time has had a different dynamic. For utter joy it had to be 91/2, that was probably due to how long we’d sat in the bottom tier.

On balance, my favourite is now extremely close between this season and 72/3.
