Premier League to ditch Sky

Post by Carwin261 » Wed Apr 12, 2023 7:44 pm

Could be the thin end of the wedge for the lesser clubs, going back to the 60’s gate money used to be split between both teams,so if The Clarets played at Old Trafford they would get a 1/3 share of the gates receipts ,which was a lot bigger than we got at home, the big clubs got greedy, and it was changed to home clubs keeping all the gate receipts, can see the Premier League insisting that those with the biggest followings will get the most money ,and we get shafted as usual.

The only way the PL is ditching Sky is if they’ve got an even more lucrative offer from whatever the replacement is. So no, I highly doubt it

There was an article about yesterday re:DAZN going to outbid all of Sky, BT & Amazon for sole rights. Further on in the article it referenced the PL setting up their own system and getting all the money available and also having control over ko times.

The only reason they'd ditch sky is to launch their own streaming service.

They're only just looking into that idea, so we're some way off ditching sky

You get the argument that the more platforms there are, the more competition there is.

But what actually happens is that the more platforms there are, the more you pay.

PL says they are going to do their own thing

Was in a lot of the Sunday press that the next deal could be similar to the current deal with multi partners but then likely to launch the league’s own platform.

Current deal has another two years to run.

For a lot of people, if there's no PL football on Sky, there's no point having it.
A few films and documentaries on penguins aren't necessarily going to appeal to a mass market.

Probably the main reason they keep coughing up whatever's required to keep it.

Agree with this...the future will surely be the PL streaming their own content in a Netflix type model.

We must not forget ITV Digital when looking for new suitors! I still hate that monkey

Isn’t there always a story like this conveniently placed ahead of the next round of bidding.

This could simply be the PL playing hardball to try and gey Sky to cough up more when the rights are up for renewal.

However it's also fair to note that streaming platforms have made great strides in recent years, and just like many other forms of media broadcast telly is on the decline as a mass market, whether subscription services or FTA.

Amazon have already dipped their toes into the PL, so it wouldn't be that great a leap for the clubs to decide that they could negotiate their own deals, or even introduce a PL streaming service.

2 reasons I don't see them ditching Sky yet.

1) Sky have been long-term partners, and whatever you think of them they have played a large role in making the PL a truly global brand.
2) Is there enough of a market, when they tried to introduce PPV games a few years ago the take up wasn't as big as they anticipated.
