Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Apparently our promotion means that we are now obliged to buy Obafemi for £3 million
Source Wales Online but the site is worse than Burnley Express so I won’t link it.

I read something similar but it didn't mention the fee. 3 million seems like a bargain and I'd be very happy to keep him from the glimpses I've seen.

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Not trying to sound funny but the fact that we have only seen "glimpses" of him would suggest he is thought to be down the order from Barnes and Foster
With Barnes thought to be going this summer just hope we can bring some strikers in who would start in front of him next season if the signing is confirmed

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
If the fee is £3m that's a steal considering the amount Swansea were asking for last summer.

I thought it was always an obligation to buy deal when he arrived in January although it was reported then as an option to buy

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
If there was any truth in that.
Hopefully VK and the team can develop him as a player as right now he looks quite a way off what we will need in premier league.

I can only think of Sunderland at home where he got some minutes through the middle in his preferred position and.he looked big, strong, quick his hold up play was better than Barnes. I'd like to see him start the next 6 through the middleBig Vinny K wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 10:48 amIf there was any truth in that.

I know this could end up on one of the "humble pie" type threads next year but I agree. I've not seen anything to make me think he'll be effective in the PL.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 10:48 amIf there was any truth in that.

No idea how much truth the rumours had, but it was suggested they were asking 12-15m.Big Vinny K wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 10:48 amIf there was any truth in that.

Like most of our squad Obafemi is still developing, however at 22 he has plenty of potential to improve, and his scoring record isn't that bad compared to his minutes on the pitch.
Well he be capable of making the step up to the PL, we just have to trust in VK I guess.

I thought he looked good when he came on at City in the cup too when he played down the middle.

It’s like the Foster situation really.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 10:55 amI know this could end up on one of the "humble pie" type threads next year but I agree. I've not seen anything to make me think he'll be effective in the PL.
VK must have seen potential and quality in both of these so we just need to wait and see and give them both a chance.
At Blackpool Obafemi was brought on and played out wide which most of us thought was a bit strange. But actually I thought that he did well - he’s clearly not a winger but I thought his touch and passing looked decent.
You can only go off what we have seen so far but no doubt that a few months with VK and pre season etc will be of benefit to all of the squad and especially the players coming in mid season. Just look at how those brought in during the summer had developed by Christmas.
Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Personally prefer him to Foster down the middle, if he can progress through the middle with that strength and pace we could have a bargain on our hands.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 10:57 amI thought he looked good when he came on at City in the cup too when he played down the middle.
People forget Barnes took until October to adapt to the new system. Hopefully VK is just giving Obafemi that time to adapt too
Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
He has the physicality and pace to offer us something in the prem which are two crucial attributes at that level. The question will be will his finishing match up

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
I think that most of us would accept that we'll have far less possession of the ball in the PL, so VK will be looking to adapt the system somewhat.
Players with outstanding pace on the break - like Obafemi and Foster - may well be much better suited to this system.

I know its very early days, and in some ways hope I am wrong, but I see more in him currently than I do in Foster, and the latter has played a lot more minutes and games for us

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Neither of them have played enough to make that comparison in my opinion . Before the sending off against Sheff Utd, Foster was showing some promising signs and causing problems . I haven’t seen enough of Obafemi to comment on him yet , not sure where he will fit in .

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
On Monday he could have come on with 5 mins left and just rode out the remaining minutes...he didn't. He harried, tracked back, showed for the ball. There is a good player in him, he just needs games and we will reap the rewards, whether as a starter or off the bench, he fits into this project perfectly

As well as his pace, he looks like he has a good football brain. Keeps possession well, gets into good areas to link up.

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Our team is now a project, over the next window we will start to see layers, progression routes for young talents, whether that's starting, off the bench, loaned out. We arent seeking instant profit, these buys like Twine and McNally are probably not going to start realising their potential for a year or two loaned out. Let's have it right, Obafemi gets 5 goals in the prem early on and will be looking at a 15million pound player minimum
Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
I like the look of him. Seems quick, strong and adaptable to a few different positions (playing on last man, bit deeper or out wide). I think at £3m it's a no brainer. Certainly a good player to have on the bench IMO.
Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Agree I like Obafemis pace and he seems to back in to defenders then spin very effectively.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 11:50 amI know its very early days, and in some ways hope I am wrong, but I see more in him currently than I do in Foster, and the latter has played a lot more minutes and games for us
Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
I would like to see both Foster and Obafemi start as a front pair vs QPR (rest Tella for the B@stards game).
Hard to really comment too much on them within consistent game time but from the glimpses I've seen I'm excited to see more.

Had no idea the lad was only 22. He certainly needs a good run in the side and could yet come on .

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
I heard the option to buy was if we failed to gain promotion. Once we were promoted it became an obligation to buy. Swans announced it as a done deal last Saturday.
Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Problem is that when a team is playing as well as ours and winning makes it harder to change it, especially when you're still wanting the title and a possible points record. I think it's only once we are champions and can't get the points record that VK will try different players.

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Very happy if that's true. Bargain. A pre-season at Burnley will help and he might develop into a real force. If not, his record at Champ level means we'll get some return either way. I'm another one who thinks game time for fringe none loan players is more important than anything now the title is in the bag.

Re: Obafemi confirmed as a Claret?
Nooooo. Part of our great history will be this season where we got the record number of points Nobody would remember us giving time for fringe players. Let them earn their place
