How the hell did we lose that
Completely battered them in the first half and seemed to lose confidence as the second progressed. Maybe a poor referee allowed them to frustrate us. It was a bit worrying at the end when we seemed to lack belief and a fair bit of physicality. But we should have been home and hosed before any of the QPR shenanigans.

Should have been out of sight at half time
Hit the bar, blocked shots and THAT TBH miss
Once they got the first they were always going to go to the “dark arts”

Re: How the hell did we lose that
We weren't good enough 2nd half
Not even remotely
Yes, we should have been out of sight, but we weren't, and we dropped our standards alarmingly and I don't think you could argue that QPR looked better than us 2nd half
Of course, the mass dying on the pitch was blatant cheating, but its up to us to recognise it and use it to motivate us to beat them, like we did with Rotherham
We just didn't do enough today and there was some iffy performances thrown in as well, especially 2nd half

Re: How the hell did we lose that
Little movement, slow to shift it, crossing shite again, no one in the box, poor defending..... etc.
Although they did make some brilliant blocks. We could have been 3 up at half time.

The dark arts started well before they scored their first.
Three minutes extra in the first didn’t cover their time wasting and other nonsense.

Re: How the hell did we lose that
Burnley have always been associated with the kind of performance qpr put in today but the way they conducted themselves was totally embarrassing it’s happened and the ref let them waste time all game can’t change it we had our chances onto the next
Re: How the hell did we lose that
Shocking to concede 2 today, they were abysmal. I like Beyer and THB but winning headers relieves pressure and we're missing a CB who can reliably win headers. We need at least one big lad at the back.
Re: How the hell did we lose that
Ignoring the time wasting and cheating. They did a Rotherham on us, very physical off the ball and no protection from the officials. We need to toughen up and IMO we are much better with Ekdal alongside Beyer. I still think we need a Joey Barton in midfield and a Charlie Austin up front. The two things we lack are a bit of toughness and a goal poacher to get on the end of some of those crosses.

True but it was more noticeable in the second when every time there was a break in play (and even when there wasn’t) at least one of their players “went down”

Re: How the hell did we lose that
I dont think the second half was that bad, and QPR deserve credit for defending manfully when they weren't flagrantly wasting time. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the best we've seen, but we continued to dominate the game.
What changed was we (a) switched off defensively, and (b) stopped manipulating the ball with the patience we'd showed in the first half. That patience allowed us to work overloads down the sides, particularly down the left (where Zaroury, Maatsen and JBG combined to superb effect, creating a constant stream of dangerous crosses), but also with Brownhill, Roberts and Benson on the right. Impatience meant we stopped doing that in the second half and that made us more dependent on moments of magic from the two wide players, which they only managed between them once.
We do also lack a midfielder who can switch the ball quickly though, particularly against 2 narrow banks of four- the only players to manage that today were THB and Mastsen - and both for that reason and the second half issue of width, I thought the substitution of Maatsen and Brownhill filling in a bit was counter productive. It made us narrower and a bit more ponderous when we needed the opposite.

Re: How the hell did we lose that
We failed to take our chances 1st half to kill them off, then 2nd half we were poor for some reason.
It can happen in games that the team who fail to exert their dominance pays the price later on.
That said they created nothing from open play and the 2 goals we conceded were poor.
Worth remembering this is still a young side and today showed where we are lacking in experience.
It had the feel of one of those days when Benson and THB fluffed those early chances and so it proved.

Look at Man City or even Liverpool (less recently) when they were one of the best. They’ve all had freak results. It happens. 9 times out of 10 we would stroll past that QPR side. It just so happens they found their lucky day. Absolutely nothing to panic about. We win the league and everyone is happy.

Could still be playing now and we wouldn’t have equalised, ran out of ideas, momentum and movement.QPR deserved it.
Re: How the hell did we lose that
Not true. There was once at about 80 minutes when no QPR player went down. It stood out as being unusual.
Re: How the hell did we lose that
Not often you see three players from the same team sprawled out ‘needing’ treatment, at the same time.

Arsenal 3 Southampton 3
Celtic 1 Motherwell 1
Burnley 1 QPR 2.
It's actually not that unusual for that to occur late in the season when sides are fighting for survival.
And back in July we'd have surely settled for being promoted and having the opportunity to win the title at Ewood wouldn't we.

Re: How the hell did we lose that
They were appalling for timewasting/cheating but we could still have beaten them easily.
Barnes had 4 chances he should have scored with. THB chance was an easy one as well, but the centre forward has no excuses.
The central midfield are often found short for creativity and today was as bad as any game this season. They knock it sideways and expect someone to create.
Going out wide works sometimes, but we don't often have men in the box for crosses.

Re: How the hell did we lose that
Well their game plan worked didn’t it. Can’t remember a team where so many players went down feigning injury just to disrupt our play. Their Goalkeepers antics from the off should have been dealt with. With play being stopped because of it together with stoppage for both teams Subs I timed it all at 12 minutes and he gives 8.

Probably cos I wasn't there.
Re: How the hell did we lose that
That second half performance lacked any thought passion or bravery I thought. THB looked slow and weak. Ekdal is a much tougher centre half. But the tactics of pushing both full backs into a congested midfield were just crazy. A Dyche old fashioned 442 against qpr would have secured a win today. Sometimes you don’t have to be clever or trendy or sexy !
Tella really is a big miss. Really hard to pick a man of the match!

Re: How the hell did we lose that
First half was just a freak - absolutely astonishing how we didn’t score at least two or three. Second half I thought we were off it but they just completely stopped playing the game of football and turned it into a big pile of sludge. Fair play, they did us due to some seriously sloppy defending, but my word it was unwatchable. Frustrating but I’m not overly concerned about it - you can get these once promotion is sorted. Missed Tella today.

Re: How the hell did we lose that
Couple of things for me.
First one, we just look tired. Whether that’s physical or mental, it’s important to remember that we’re a very young team and a lot of our players are experiencing this level of workload and playing in so many “big” games for the first time in their careers.
The second factor today I think that we possibly lost a bit of faith that we’d get the first goal. How we didn’t go in at half time several goals up is a complete freak event. It may well have knocked our belief and boosted theirs. Again, some of that might be attributed to experience.

Very much that, ag. They're not robots and its very hard to maintain the levels they have when the main job is done and the secondary target is a formality. Our more experienced players will see us through this.

Yes, we certainly started trying to force things in TBD second half, no doubt as a consequence of the doubt that creeps in when such a dominant half yields no rewards.agreenwood wrote: ↑Sat Apr 22, 2023 7:57 pmCouple of things for me.

That mental fatigue would be the generous interpretation for the defending for both goals, which just lacked focus.

I just hope the QPR lad who had cramp in the first half recovers - that was embarrassing
Re: How the hell did we lose that
They didn't oblige us by playing to our strengths. Packed their own final 3rd and refused to be drawn in to pressing the ball, which is why we ended up aimlessly passing it sideways on the halfway line.

Ah well, sh1t happens.
Would be gutted if it wasn't for the fact we've had a fantastic season.
This must be what it's like to be a Man City fan when they throw in a freak result.
I'm quite relaxed about it because we still have margin to win the championship.

Days like today are the consequence of being so good all season.
The intensity isn’t what it was, understandably.
But we are so much better than the rest that we still could have easily won it in the first half.

Second half, slow slow, no quick, quick then slow slow. Must have out passed 2 teams.
Then woeful defending
Then woeful defending
Re: How the hell did we lose that
Frustrating not to win but I thought QPR were very good today. Sure, they were fortunate in the first half not to be a couple down, but their last ditch defending and blocking was solid. Second half their management of the game was excellent and their shape was compact and tight; really restricted us in the final third. We had enough time to win it irrespective of them pushing the boundaries at every opportunity and I’ve no problem with that, especially given their league position. They worked very hard and you could see how much they needed that win and I thought they deserved it. On to Rovers…
