Sometimes you need to buy assets when they become available even if not necessarily needed right now. If we think he's going right to the top, and is available now - then makes sense. Wouldn't surprise me if we loan him out to a championship club for the next season and we plan to start him 12-24 months from now.

Ridiculous, Burnley are not a club like Liverpool ect to spend 19m in a keeper then loan him out until he's readyblake's wand wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 7:39 amSometimes you need to buy assets when they become available even if not necessarily needed right now. Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Every transfer window we have some weird logic displayed on here, good to see this one is no different.
It is interesting when the story came out Tella is available for 15m the comments were just get him, then it comes to paying somewhere near the same for someone else and you have to question where the money is coming from. Then we are told we have spent 50m already thinking you pay the fee in full on day 1.
Then we have the thought process that the players we sign are done in order of most needed, comments like we need a striker are really strange.
Last season we had the owners accused of doing it on the cheap, signing poor players with no end product and only the loan players were any good to now bordering on reckless spending. I get that it isn't easy to do for some but judging the transfer window when it closes is a much better time to do so.

Trafford will be worth double at least in 2-3 years no doubt, my only issue would be it weakens our position when it comes to low balling the “smaller clubs” for the Likes of Clarke, Fleming etc, they’ll see it as we have money to burn so pay up for their top assets.

We obviously had a shortlist of keepers - doesn't mean we were going to sign each and every one. Some don't come off (Verbruggen for example) so they had alternative targets. They're playing the market the right way.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Seriously struggling to understand the negativity around signing Trafford, with the thought process being “Why are we doing this instead of X, Y, Tella”. People should be excited at the fact that our budget is clearly big enough to allow Kompany the decision making that says the likes of Coulibaly and Trafford are worthy additions knowing he is still in the market for probably another 5 players (LB, CM X 2, Winger, Striker).
On another note altogether, I notice it’s being reported this morning by many (including Romano) that Leander Dendoncker is available to leave Villa. Whilst he is 28 and won’t fit the resale model, he’s got that height/physicality and PL Experience we arguably need in the middle of the park IMO. He’s also Belgian of course so would be well known to VK. Just a suggestion, no idea how much he’d cost.

One of the performance related clauses will not be how many splinters he gets in his arse sat on the bench. If he signs he plays is the only way I see this. I don’t get all the fuss about what level he’s played at. Keeper is the one position where a shot saved is a shot saved and coming for crosses and taking them is similar. Obviously deemed good enough by the experts let’s hope they are right.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Your absolutely right-we are not like Liverpool. They spend £67m on a quality GK when Allison signed. The alleged initial £14m we have spent on him is still lower than we paid for Chris Wood 7 or 8 years ago, who we went on to sell for £25mAGENT_CLARET wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 7:42 amRidiculous, Burnley are not a club like Liverpool ect to spend 19m in a keeper then loan him out until he's ready
This is a genuine investment. Had he gone to Sheff Utd or Leicester, who were both after him, he could have been moving again for £30m plus in a year. The fact the new Leicester manager wanted him (Pep's assistant for many years), shows how good this guy is. There is a genuine shortage of "British" keepers in the PL and this could be a very shrewd bit of business

Re:Tella.
Noticed in the morning papers Chelsea are after Livramento and Arsenal are after Lavia, both for good money, from Saints. Martin will want to build his own team but will any income from these potential deals affect the Tella situation. It appears he isn’t wanted there.

Whilst initially having to steady my brew and thinking it's a heck of a lot for us to splurge on a position which didn't, on the surface, appear to be a top priority, you have to now believe that VK feels it is a top priority and that what we currently have in that area doesn't fill him with enough confidence. Also, it seems from what people are saying about the trajectory of Trafford that whatever happens we'll always get back what we paid and almost certainly plenty more, so fair enough I guess, as long as there's enough cash still available right now for other upgrades in other areas.

Anyone who saw our games in the Premier league years must realise GK is a pivotal position for us. Not seen his distribution but that will be important as well.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Got a feeling that the fee won't be quite as large as is reported. 19m may well be the potential value of the deal, but only if for e.g. we stay up, he goes on to play 50 Premier League games for us and we get into Europe. May be wrong but I can't see it being anywhere near that figure initially.
If it is accurate I'll be surprised, but kind of excited that the board feel in a position that they can bring in exciting prospects for sizeable fees. Investing in the squad should lead to a largee return than keeping our millions stashed away in a bank account. And should be much more exciting to watch.

The Gibson fee in the media (and stated by some on here when trying to bash the previous owners) was different to what we actually paid because he never met the add-on targets

Agree - it’s arguably the most important position on the pitch. This guy looks like a great shot stopper but will not have Muric’s confidence on the ball. I think he’ll be our no 1 although Muric has earned the right to start the season- if he stays.Ziggy Stardust wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 9:03 amAnyone who saw our games in the Premier league years must realise GK is a pivotal position for us. Most especially for a club who might struggle to score a handful of goals every week; buying a goalkeeper who you think might save you from conceding 19 goals a season is a whole lot cheaper than buying a striker who you think might score you nineteen.Ziggy Stardust wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 9:03 amAnyone who saw our games in the Premier league years must realise GK is a pivotal position for us...
Given the signings we've made and those we're allegedly chasing, I'm starting to anticipate a very different game-plan/methodology from last year's: A rock solid defence with some quick lads up front to score on the break.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I’m surprised people are surprised to be honest. I’ve always maintained that a new number one would be a priority for VK in the event of promotion and it seems this is the case. Muric on the whole did a great job for us last season but coasted through most games without having to make a save of any note - we all know that this won’t be the case next season. When he nutmegged a striker towards the end of the season I can’t imagine this particularly endeared him to VK either - strangely he was lauded for it on here, but can you imagine him attempting that next season and conceding a goal.
I also don’t buy into Muric deserving to start the season, this isn’t kids football. If the coaching and management staff don’t think that Muric is cut out to be the number one in a probable relegation-battling side then they’re not going to start him so that his feelings aren’t hurt. Unfortunately the goalkeeper is one position where you really do need a number one and a backup, they’re rarely rotated unless necessary.
This seems like an exciting signing, I would be slightly concerned about his age and lack of experience and wonder whether we’ll bring in an older head as a number two and sell both Muric and BPF.

The Trafford deal doesn’t seem much different to the Collins deal to be fair. He’s obviously very highly rated. I thought Muric was excellent in the second half of the season though so will be interesting to see what happens come the start of the season.

I think Muric looked a hell of a keeper in the 2nd half of the season to be fair

Think Wood was our record signing at £17m, surprised we managed to recoup so much for Gibson.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 04, 2023 9:35 amThe Gibson fee in the media (and stated by some on here when trying to bash the previous owners) was different to what we actually paid because he never met the add-on targets

With the signing of this dortmund lad I would presume either Ekdal is being sold, which I would be rather sad about, or we are moving to a back 3.

Apart from anything else we'd then have to shell out millions more for a No.2 keeper of Muric's standard (or better) - unless you'd be happy with BPF as our No.2?
This board would implode if we bought another goalkeeper.

O'Shea is just as comfortable playing RB so competition to Roberts as much as CB
McNally the more likely to leave
Whether we play a back three or four Ekdal will be, at least, on the bench for majority games if fit
We are allowed a bench of nine players from which five can be used

That's certainly true. And I have to admit I'm not sure exactly what the plan is there.
With his age and lack of games at top level he would have been one to sign then potentially loan out, but as he's rumoured to be coming in on loan initially then that rules out that possibility.
