I seem to remember Middlesbrough fans laughing when we bought Pope. Not sure fans opinions are the best judge of a deal.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 10:08 amI 100% back what is happening, but lets not beat around the bush here, we'd be laughing ourselves silly if another promoted club spent that amount of money on a keeper with no premier league experience and at that age

Absolutely
They bought a proven La Liga and Spanish international keeper who turned out to be crap, and we bought a complete unknown who turned out to be Englands best shot stopper
I 100% back what we are doing, and it is the only way a club like ours can even hope to compete at this level (by buying and selling at the right time)

I’m not sure why there’s so much animosity.
You can think the lads a good signing whilst thinking we have paid over the odds for him.
I think he will be a great signing. He’s got the pedigree and our manager knows the lad. But I also recognise that it is a really substantial fee for a lad that’s only played at league 1 level.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
It proved with Popey its not this 1st contract it's getting the 2nd contract signed or selling the asset at the right time - if the timing is wrong i.e. the player has the power because he has only 12-18 months left no matter how good he is or has become as per popey you have to "give them away" to get any return at all. Once they get to 12 months left you get the tweet "not thinking about my future until the end of the season" then you know there walking away for nothing.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
That's just insurance option for them in case he really impresses with us and becomes one of the best goalkeepers in the league. They insert similar clauses in a lot of their recent deals, in fact, even Muric has one and we all know he will never be good enough to play for City.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 05, 2023 7:37 pmThe best keepers I’ve seen for Burnley came with very little top level history. If Manchester City are insisting on a buy back, to me they are doing that for very good reason.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Has there ever been such debate over signing a hugely talented footballer. For me I am thinking £3m cost this year, £3m cost next year and so on, and if he turns out to be as good as we hope he will cost us an additional £4m, for probably keeping us in the Prem for 5 years (whats that worth). And if he is exceptional we might even sell him for £30m in a few years

I hope we end up paying the full 19 million, that will mean he’s progressed and meeting his potential. If we only pay the initial 14 millon he’ll never of made those land marks, international appearances etc

I can’t wait for a signing to coke in so we can talk about something else other than Traffords fee

i hope the deal is already done as i think his value will already go up after we in the u21 final
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Highly unlikely he will sign before the final as he has other priorities until after the final whistle blows. But I guess you mean the fee agreed with City… but they can always change that until he signs…
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
His value won’t go up unless he gets some PL appearances under his belt or even Championship appearances. We are paying over the odds as it is.

Welcome to BFC James. A club that has helped develop goalkeepers to become England internationals over the last few years. Looking forward to see you play and hopefully develop into another England number 1.

Someone will be along in a minute to say that VK is still unproven in the Premier League as a manager. They might as well say it now, as next year it will be too late and wrong.

Trafford.
Potential -yes
Today? - unknown
Premier League - huge gamble for a lot of dosh
Posters are using the word 'if' a lot.
I wish him well, however, at 20 he is not yet a keeper.

AC Milan....20 mill euros for Benson ?

Oh ffs any other transfer rumours APART from Trafford?
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
What do you know about goalkeeping that VK doesn’t?
CT once called you out for criticising Lee Grant for not saving a shot that went wide and you spent all last season telling us all how rubbish Muric was

It is an opinion. Potential yes. At 20 a goalkeeper? No. Will get caught out 'too often' in his learning. Could cost us in the prem...like Muric.
Lee Grant?

Lots of talk about recruiting goalkeepers on this thread - interesting article from The Athletic today on the same subject - it kicks off on the fact that a significant number of Premier League clubs appear to be in the market for keepers this summer

Peter Shilton made his debut for Leicester at 16. Was so impressive they sold Gordon Banks within a year. Would you say he was a Goalkeeper at 20?

Like many transfers there will be add ons. I don’t know if they are payable if we stay up, if we win the champions league or if he plays for England. I suspect it’s a mix of expected achievements and stretch achievements.AGENT_CLARET wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 11:30 amIf we were the selling club instead of the buying one we'd be saying we got 19m for him, can't have it both way's, all the media say its a 19m deal
I’ve been told the up guaranteed figure is £12m.

I'm not sure he'll start the season tbh, look at the time frame - he's playing at the weekend, then will have a few weeks off you would imagine, we start in about 5 weeks.superdimitri wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 8:04 amIt is a bit concerning Trafford hasn't even had Championship experience yet.
