Fair play to Maatsen, but whether he comes here or not it seems highly unlikely that he’ll play much at Chelsea next season. Just look at their squad - they haven’t finished spending this summer.

That’s not even a reserve team. That’s a third XI
At the rate Chelsea are selling players, I wouldn’t be so sure

Reports this morning saying City’s buy back clause for Trafford is £42million.

Either Romano or Sasha said yesterday it was 3x the transfer fee. So I guess that means we are paying £14 million.

Chilwell, Cucurella and Hall will all be in front of him for the LB/Midfield slot
Would like to see a loan enquiry for Chukwuemeka

So if he gets us to win the league, FA Cup and wins England the world cup we only get £57 million.

We've been shafted!

We are obviously going to take two players on loan.

I think we are trying to play the market as we probably have four players we would take on loan. Lokonga, Maatsen, Diallo and one from city.

Lokonga might be for sale, i guess were waiting for Chelsea to make their mind up about Maatsen. He might be for sale if they need some extra cash for FFP.

Lokonga and Maatsen might be for sale.

Read that Maatsen wants to stay at Chelsea and fight for his place, cross him off our shopping list.

I find it hilarious that Maatsen has been with Chelsea since 2019, now the media, particularly the London Press ,proclaiming the club has "discovered a gem". Unbelievable Jeff !!

Just shows what VK can do for players careers if Maatsen and Chelsea believe he is approaching that level now.

It will come down to Pochetino's decision making process.

If he feels that Ian is good enough for Chelsea now he'll get a squad number.
If not he'll get another loan or will be sold. Pre season/ early season is the time for that. Think McNally / CJER for us last season.

We may still get him in this window or the next.

Good luck to him intrical part of our championship team but we move on, VK will have someone lined up and let's not forget Taylor was one of our better premier league players so no immediate panic.

This presumption that, at left back, Maatsen is somehow the only game in town, seems to be a UTC phenomenon.

I doubt those charged with our recruitment will be similarly obsessed...there will be plenty of names in the frame.

He scored two for Chelsea last night and an Insta post with blue hearts on it (I know, I know)… but possibly does look like he’s happy and has maybe been reassured of game time by Poch.

So we need to move on I think. A real shame but if he is out of contract next summer maybe it’s something we can revisit.

I sense Maatsen would only view us as a stepping stone hence why he would prefer a loan. Not sure how that helps us tbh. One thing for sure though, we are holding out for someone. Centre midfield is also a bit light but at least we have Cullen, Brownhill, Bastien and Cork. Left back is very light indeed.

I suspect 'stay at Chelsea' is probably meant in a long term sense. He could sign a new contract there and be loaned out (hopefully to us). He isn't going to get any game time there this season excepting for the likes of the Carabao.

If Maatsen only wants to come here on loan, I’d be going elsewhere. Only loans I’d agree to are ones with options to buy. Just don’t see the point developing other teams players as a Prem team - you’re just kicking the can down the road. Would honestly rather go with Charlie.

Key position is this , if Maatsen doesn’t sign we need a big hitter in this position the way VK likes to play. I am sure our manager will have the right choice lined up.

Come on guys, we know how this works now, Maatsen will be one of five or six equally viable left back targets. Gomez is probably another, Manning was clearly one, and there'll be a few names we've never been linked with yet.

We certainly won't be waiting right up until the last few days of the window hoping that Chelsea are good enough to let him out on loan again. We'll have moved on long before that, and I rather suspect we've already done so.

Maybe I'm just a bit cynical about bringing players into a PL squad who may be on a bit of a downward trajectory career wise.
We have had a few.
Tell me about it; I still cringe whenever I remember that Manc has been we got from City by way of QPR and some Jonny-Foreigner outfit; Joe Barden or Barman, certainly it was something like that

I’d disagree with the first couple of sentences tbh. I think it would help us massively. Gets a starting place tied up with someone we know fits, and gives us more time to source a permanent fix. If we do well (sorry, WHEN we do well) there will be left sided players banging the door off its hinges to be part of VK’s plans. Well, that’s what I reckon anyway…

Maatsen will be one of a number of targets for his position. He’s probably the preference because he’ll take less bedding in.

We’ll certainly be signing someone in his position I’d say. Can’t see VK wanting to start the season with Taylor or Vitinho there.

Chelsea will be desperate to tie Maatsen down to a long term contract so will be making lots of positive noises to him. Once he signs Poch will quietly suggest that he won’t get past Chilwell and Cucurella this season so go out on loan and assuming he performs the year after will be his chance. I can see us being the front runners for that loan move. Dangerous to wait for it because injuries to either of the two players ahead of him or some incredible performances pre-season could change everything.

Gomez, Maatsen. Palmer and Tella I hope to see Gomez over Maatsen personally, Maatsen going forward & s threat I like but defending I worried last season & it'll be even worse this season I think

Tella I really like but think we wont pay the asking price Palmer looks good to me but I doubt we will get him

That’s about right for me, if anything overpriced as I’d have said McNally is worth about 5m and Thomas 1.5-2m. You’re looking at a total value package there worth around £13-14m for a 26 year old with a year left on his deal who has never played in the Premier League? Nah.

Coventry can keep him and finish 9th and watch him leave for nothing. Good player but far more appealing options open to us.

Agree with all of this. It’s a bit of a shame that Tella seems increasingly unlikely, although no guarantees that he would make the jump up. The left back situation is an interesting one and no doubt lots going on behind the scenes with this position. It will be interesting to see who we end up signing for this position and could it be another name we haven’t heard of yet?

I think one thing is for certain we will be signing a left back better than Maatsen was as the start of last season. The bar has obviously risen now in the premier league and therefore a good chance he will also be better than Maatsen is now.

They may want McNally and cash as opposed to Thomas being included. McNally is tried and tested at Championship level whereas it’s a step up for Thomas.

The extra money may be more appealing, particularly if they are needing to fill gaps left.

I’m a little surprised by us shopping in the championship as much as we appear to be - links to Hamer, Gyökeres, Flemming and buying O’Shea. I expected more from abroad as last summer, where the value looks better if you can find the right players.

Exciting.

If Kompany and his scouting team have assessed a 19 year old with barely any football behind him as worth £3m then I am confident he will prove to be a good one! Out of absolutely nowhere, again like Amdouni. Reminds me of Zaroury and Vitinho last summer where we heard the link a day before then they were signed the day after.

Looking into Koleosho more, he broke into the matchday squad for Espanyol's first team in La Liga for the last two months of the season (had made a couple of sub appearances at the start of the season too). He came on against Barcelona and in the last game of the season scored against Almeria with a goal that reeked of Manuel Benson.

Also, interesting nationality. Born in the USA, moved to Spain at around 11, played internationally for the USA at U-15 level, then called up to the Canadian senior team last year, then capped for Italy at U-19 level 7 times.

Good fee and exactly what I thought we should be asking for considering his successful loans - Coventry take note please on accurate valuations. Good luck to Bobby, time for him to move for sure and I hope we have stuck a sell on in because his trajectory looks very upwards.

Good move for Bobby and a good fee for all parties imo.

I feel like if we’d have come down this season he’d have probably made our squad - wasn’t quite to be…. All the best Bobby!

Bobby Thomas to Coventry for 2m being reported by Sky Sports News.
Doesn't really add up if Coventry wanted McNally + cash for Hamer but not Thomas.

So far we've had that Cov want a cash deal for Hamer, then McNally + cash (but not Thomas) now they are possibly buying Thomas. Just shows how much speculation is out there. If we sell Thomas to them then it obviously means we given up on Hamer. I'd prefer Fleming over Hamer anyway.

Maybe we will look at Hamer as a pure cash deal and intend to keep McNally as backup now that Coulibaly isn't coming?

Selling players who realistically aren't ready for the level we are now isn't the worst strategy in the world

One thing we appear to be a lot better at is recognising that if we can sell someone who isn't going to feature, then we should

£2 million sounds like a good deal (though would presume that includes add ons and a sell on fee)

Hopefully we can get the likes of CJ Egan-Riley, Owen Dodgson and Dara Costelloe good loan moves this window so that (if they're not going to be PL players, ala Bobby Thomas) we could have a fresh stack of options to trade with in 12 months. This is clearly part of our strategy and I am all for it.

Yeah pretty much this. Much better than having them hang about or go on loan again

& this precisely - if they do well and we drop a level then perhaps they can be part of the squad, if not they can showcase their talent playing first team football and we can turn a nice little profit. Win win
