Who are we selling for that much?what_no_pies wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 9:42 pmFully expect some to go the other way and balance that spend out a bit. Realistically we could have £30/40m in asking prices for players we're actively seeking buyers for.

Trevor Steven was playing in the 3rd division when he made his debut for us at 17.

I'm 100% in the 'I'd rather try and get Gomez out of Man City or someone else rather than over pay to get Maatsen' camp. He's more than decent, he's young with no doubt good sell on value in the future but we need someone who's main quality is defending and that's not him at this stage of his career (from what we've seen).

I agree with us needing someone who’s main quality is defending, I’m not sure Gomez at city is that player, he’s more like Maatsen than an actual defender, second half of the euros final he played right wingVegas Claret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 5:52 amI'm 100% in the 'I'd rather try and get Gomez out of Man City or someone else rather than over pay to get Maatsen' camp. Koleosho was in the Italy squad that won the UEFA U-19 tournament held in July in Malta. He played in the Final against Portugal (on as a sub in the 80th minute); in the Semi against Spain (on as a sub on 69); and started the group matches against Portugal (subbed on 75') and Malta (subbed on 76')

Would have thought the "big spending" West Ham or Forest might have gone for the LB Digne at Villa. He joined them when Gerrard became manager and now out of favour with Emery. Hes a decent attacking defender
I really feel Burnley got the best out of Maatsen but both the above clubs have big squads and will drop you after a mistake or two. Max Cornet has hardly played for WHU

Dignes a brilliant player but is 30. For what he'd cost West Ham would only get a couple years out of him and be a tough one to make money back on after, vs Maatsen has more longevity and room for a sell on.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 8:56 amWould have thought the "big spending" West Ham or Forest might have gone for the LB Digne at Villa. I really like the Redmond deal. I know he can be hit and miss (name me a winger who isn't) but bags of experience, free, good fitness record - I think it's a really smart signing.

Definitely Charlie Taylor then and as a bonus, CT looks likely to have the strength, experience and nous to carry the Clarets-scapegoat role; we need to find a new one if Trafford plays instead of Muric, this Forum always demands one. By Christmas and irrespective of results/performance there'll be people posting about how useless and never was good enough Taylor is, while also remembering Maatsen as being our best left back since Alex Elder.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 7:58 amI agree with us needing someone who’s main quality is defending, I’m not sure Gomez at city is that player, he’s more like Maatsen than an actual defender...
I liked Maatsen and last season, when we were the dominant side in our league, I think that week in week out he was a better option than Taylor. Next season will be different - even if we do well - we'll have a lot less of the ball and be defending far more; as a result, Maatsen's weaknesses would be far more apparent - we will need real/defensive fullbacks.

Another great transfer window.
What would we be without VK' s knowledge and influence.?.. dread to think really.
Well done to AP and the board as well for their constant backing and unwavering support for the manager.
Big Vinny bronze statue should be already commissioned!!

It’d be a surprise if we signed any more attacking midfielders/wingers. We’ve now got Zaroury, Benson, Twine, JBG, Redmond and the young Italian to come in. Amdouni also supposedly likes to play no10.
Left back and central midfield would be the priorities for me from here, unless anyone leaves.

I don’t agree re wide players. Benson, Zaroury and Redmond plus one more required. Twine isn’t a winger and I don’t class JBG as a winger anymore (he just hasn’t got the pace required for this system). I wouldn’t have though the young Italian will go straight into the first team.agreenwood wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 12:59 pmIt’d be a surprise if we signed any more attacking midfielders/wingers. I agree we need a left back and a midfielder (maybe even two) though. Maybe another centre forward too.

We've been playing Obafemi as a winger and there's always Churlinov (even if he seems likely to leave, shame as he's young enough that I'd still want to see what he can do, had very little match time last season).Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 1:39 pmI don’t agree re wide players. I wouldn't write JBG off regardless of his pace but I'm not sure which position he will be going forwards.
Plus Vitinho can cover wide if need be.
Really think our wage and transfer budget has much bigger priorities than even more wingers.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Yeah CM the priority for me now. Minimum 1 if not 2. Definitely one that can play in a double pivot next to Cullen then another that can get forward and score a goal or 2 (Hamer/Flemming type).
Left back is a gaping hole obviously, albeit I don’t mind Taylor starting there against City, which means another 2 weeks until our next game v Villa, giving a bit more time.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Guesswork but I think we'll sign:
Tella - Permanent
Lokonga - Loan with obligation to purchase if we stay up
Maatsen - Loan with no option
Purely based on where we are as a squad right now and the fact that The Athletic said yesterday that we are still pushing for Maatsen and Tella. As other targets have reared their head and then gone away, those two keep coming up (understandably) and remain areas where we are more than likely seeking a player. Lokonga is just based on the obvious Kompany link and the fact he's available from Arsenal - feels an obvious one to me.

Flemming
Lokonga
Maatsen
And a few fringe players sold or loaned out and it would be a great window.

THB as a priority and a midfielder with power and experience
Unfortunately, I think we will not get Maatsen now. But I am more than Happy to use Taylor in his preferred and best position.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I can't see us getting Maatsen or Tella now unfortunately.
Presume we still want a left sided defender as we didn't get Coulibaly and need a physical presence in midfield in my opinion.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Kompany has said Taylor isn't a left back, he's a centre back. Now obviously that opinion may have changed over the summer but there's no proof of that at the moment.
So knowing what we know, I find it strange a fair few seem to think Taylor is an option for us at left back. Left side of a centre back three, possibly. But a left back in the Kompany system, we assume going off last season and this preseason so far, needs a very different skillset to the one Taylor has.

Unfortunately I agree with Tella and Maatsen looking unlikely.
Lokonga or Vrancx
Hamer or Flemming
LB
Get three of those over the line and it will have been an excellent window.

Leeds trying to sign Taylor apparently. Hard to see that happening any time soon with the dearth of players we have in the position.

Taylor to Leeds would make perfect sense if we had at least another left back already on the books.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Obafemi, Churlinov and Vitinho weren't good enough as wide men in the Championship - never mind the PL. Obafemi isn't a wide man, Churlinov isn't quite at the required standard (and probably can't even be considered right now) and Vitinho definitely isn't a winger (not quick enough). Vitinho is really just a sub who can fill in for 20 mins if required.spt_claret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 1:42 pmWe've been playing Obafemi as a winger and there's always Churlinov (even if he seems likely to leave, shame as he's young enough that I'd still want to see what he can do, had very little match time last season).

I do like JBG - lovely footballer - but not a winger anymore imo.
Let's also remember that Benson is often injured/carrying knocks. So that, coupled with the fact that he either plays 60 mins from the start or comes on for the last 30 mins means we really need someone of at least his level to dovetail with him so we have the same threat on that side regardless of who is on the pitch.
We maybe have to sell a couple to bring a couple more in but our system and the way we play is heavily dependant on how much of a threat the wingers are.

Anthony Elanga going from Man United to Forest for £15m. Not sure on any add-ons and wages but I wouldn't be surprised if we've had a sniff.

Totally agree, we lack guile and physicality in centre midfield and to sign two of those would complete an excellent window with a LB.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Sell Taylor to Leeds for sensible money and make Chelsea an offer they can’t refuse for Maatsen assuming he wants to come to us. If not then keep Taylor until we get a replacement

I'm anticipating - or maybe just hoping? - that this will prove less of a problem next season; compared to the Championship football's generally played a bit differently in the EPL and the players are better protected by the officials when it isn't.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Fri Jul 21, 2023 3:15 pm...remember that Benson is often injured/carrying knocks. Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
If the shortfall between our bid of £15m for Maatsen and Chelsea's valuation is £5m, then make Leeds pay to the exact penny what that gap is.
If you offered me the chance to sign Maatsen for £15m+ Charlie Taylor I am biting your hand off. He has been a good, solid pro for us but it feels to me like it's a good time to shake hands and wish him well. We can use Vitinho as backup to Maatsen, or bring in an alternative cheaper left back option to be backup.

Sky Sports News reported earlier that Millwall are wanting £13m for Flemming and we’ve had 4 bids turned down. Do we think that ship has sailed?
