Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
If you can believe BBC Sport's Gossip page (and why should we, they have mentioned Harry Kane on a daily basis for about 6 weeks now re Bayern) Southampton have turned Liverpool's bid down over Romeo Lavia, they've asked too much for Ward-Prowse for WHU's liking and there is v little intelligence on Tella, possibly suggesting that they are asking too much. Why are Southampton over-pricing their players? Are they comfortable enough financially to hang on to their squad? Are they taking a risky strategy?

Tbf they don’t need to the money by the looks of it. They only need to sell Lavia, which looks like a matter of time and they will have generated north of 80m this window.RN_Claret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 9:06 amIf you can believe BBC Sport's Gossip page (and why should we, they have mentioned Harry Kane on a daily basis for about 6 weeks now re Bayern) Southampton have turned Liverpool's bid down over Romeo Lavia, they've asked too much for Ward-Prowse for WHU's liking and there is v little intelligence on Tella, possibly suggesting that they are asking too much. Good question(s).
Confess to knowing very little about Southampton’s finances - maybe CP can fill us in - but since they spent so heavily in January I can only imagine that selling players is a must and they’ll be in big trouble if they don’t. Even continuing to pay their salaries during the summer must be a struggle, you’d think?
Fair play to them for holding out, but they’re either richer than I thought or taking some big risks.

I think the ship has sailed on Tella, Flemming, Hamer, Maatsen and Vranckx. I'm expecting Lokonga and a LB but nothing much beyond that.

I think if you add Ramsey to that, that is as close to a ten out of ten window you can get

I too think a CM and LB are the only real essentials. But didn't we bid on a winger playing in France a couple of days ago?
From what I've heard about our approach to transfers in that we strengthen wherever we can whenever we can, I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple more new faces come in than is necessary. Can't harm to bring in more if the money is there.

On Southampton - we would hope to do the exact same if we went down. Sell high or keep a strong squad in the Championship. Fair play to them.

Recent accounts but a lot will depend on if they’ve got relegation clauses etcNewClaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 9:16 amGood question(s).

Southampton’s owner is hugely wealthy. As long as they stay the right side of FFP, they won’t need to sell.

Everton are (reportedly) trying to sign Che Adams and Suleman and I expect Ward Prowse to join West Ham with David Moyes under great pressure to strengthen the squad with no incomings since the departure of Rice.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 9:35 amSalisu for 17m, Orsic 3m,
Apparantly rejected a bit worth just over 50m for Lavia. If they get the 60m they are after that’s the 80m this summer.
If I was a betting man I would expect there only outgoings now to be JWP and Lavia
Several of the top 6 clubs chasing Lavia so can’t blame them for holding out for big bucks.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Southampton could come unstuck if the players in question are priced out of a move. You only have to look at Mitrovic at Fulham.

But I do expect someone to come in and sign him. He’s far too good for the championship.

We all agree he's a good player, but at his age he has to have a limit on his value. Personally I'm not surprised WHU pulled out, there won't be a crush trying to replace them. Lavia and Tella are different matters though. They'll probably get the money they want for Lavia, in the end, and I wouldn't have sold Tella, for what we are rumoured to have offered.

Don’t be surprised if WHU go back with a “take it or leave it” Final Offer. As I said David Moyes under great pressure to strengthen with zero incomings thus far having sold their prize asset. Moyes would probably have already been replaced if it had not been for Europa Cup win.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 9:49 amApparently West Ham have pulled out of the JWP deal.

Not sure they will sell Tella now. Apart from us there appears to be absolutely zero interest in him. They are unlikely to get the bidding war they need to get the price up.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 10:05 amDepends how much they are wanting though.

West Ham fans absolutely furious with their summer window as you'd expect - big money in for their star player, but signed nobody. Ajax have sabotaged a deal for Borges from City and not wanting to pay up for Ward Prowse. Expect a couple of panic signings.

Whilst many players at S'ton may well be on silly wages due to several years of PL football, Tella probably isn't one of them so offloading him from the wage bill probably isn't a priority.

West Ham tipped up by a professional betting punter who specialises in English football as a great value bet to be relegated. It was available at around 10/1 but he tipped them at the start of this week on the Racing Post season preview show which has a big audience so odds might have come in now.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 10:29 amWest Ham fans absolutely furious with their summer window as you'd expect - big money in for their star player, but signed nobody. From what I have seen Tella hasn't pulled up any trees in their friendlies. He has been played in different positions but doesn't seem to get involved like he did with us. It might be that their style of play doesn't suit him.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
That or is heart isn't in it, so he isn't at his dynamic best. Either that or he is trying to avoid an injury until the window shuts
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Looks like Bournemouth could be signing Newcastleclaret’s favourite Alex Scott for £25m. A few had them possibly going down this season but I’m not sure on that.

They could be surprise candidates for relegation. They have all the hallmarks. A club with a detached fan base not replacing key players, a poor season last season league wise. I think they will be ok as they’ll spend their way out in Jan if need be but the signs aren’t good for them. It could be them and Everton in a battle this yearSwizzlestick wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 10:29 amWest Ham fans absolutely furious with their summer window as you'd expect - big money in for their star player, but signed nobody. 10mil + - Ramsey

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The way we dealt with the funds from players sales is a lot more complicated than what you are suggesting. It’s well reported we took advances on these via factoring facilities etc.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 12:32 pmWe made a profit from sales last year buying bargains and selling Nick.Dwight.Cornet also we got place money for finishing top.We we always being televised and got a serious wedge for actually going up .
In terms of television appearances and prize money earned last year for winning the league its very little. A fraction of what you get in Premier League.
Of course our money goes up significantly in the Premier League but so do our costs (mainly wages).
I would be interested in how we are funding this amount of spend in the transfer market and the kind of fees being talked about. It’s exciting to see as the types of players we are buying look like those with potential to increase their value in the future if we develop them like we did with a lot of the team last year. It’s a very different model than spending £20m money on a 28 or 29 year old player on a 4 year contract when we may be buying him at the peak of his value.
So the interesting part will be how we fund this strategy in the short term (next couple of years) and effectively before we start to sell and make profit on some of the players we have brought in under VK.
