Maybe the player has intimated he's not prepared to risk a big, long term deal by playing for them for another year..Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 7:43 pmApparently only 12 months left on his contract, but very much like the Tarky situation here a couple of years back, surely better for Sheffield to forego the £12? million now and hope he plays a significant part in keeping them in the PL and all the riches that entails. The more about I think of Tarky, the more I respect him. He gave every ounce to try and keep us up two two seasons ago knowing he was off to a lucrative deal..

Which raises another question why they didn’t want to renew his contract - unless they did and he wanted to move on?EarbyClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 07, 2023 7:54 pmSeems like they are not prepared to allow players to run down their contracts - Heckingbottom said they accepted Marseille's offer for Ndiaye because he had less than 12 months left on on his contract and they didn't want him to walk away for nothing next summer
It does suggest a serious cash-flow problem
Can only assume we've structured the proposed deal in such a way that we're making a significant payment up-front
Perhaps it is linked to Vinicius Souza and United will land him this week

I’d be delighted with Berge but it’s hard to believe Sheff U are willing to sell. He was linked with the likes of Arsenal not long ago. Hope it happens.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think that if there's a question mark over Berge, it's not so much why are Sheff Utd selling, but more why is noone else in for him at £12-15m in a market when Scott McTominay is being touted for £40m. Sheff Utd want every penny for him and clearly they've failed to get an auction going even at a comparatively modest price. If Nixon is right the wages aren't that big a problem for most clubs these days either.
I assume the answer to that is he's had 3 pretty indifferent years at Sheff Utd either playing in the Championship or being relegated, quite possibly playing in a team that have not generally played to his strengths. But still it's a bit of a fall for a player who was being linked with top 6 clubs when he surprisingly landed at Bramall Lane and it does beg the question are we all missing something the professionals are not.

Just looked up the usual compilation video of Berge. Firstly he huge. 6 5. Very strong on ball and tackle … scores goals as well and can head the ball. With that height can fill in as a centre half too I presume. Cost Sheffield 22m in 2020 …. Was linked with Liverpool too. So 12 m is not that big price for a player with premier experience.

The fact that the news only broke today indicates it is linked to Souza - with both clubs known to be interested - that's the only direct link I'm aware of
Would explain why Berge hasn't been touted more widely earlier in the window - attracting the interest of supposedly bigger clubs - and additionally why we seem very keen to get this wrapped up in the next 24 hours
Can't see that we're missing something that would be deterring other clubs - we've seen an opportunity and acted quickly - hopefully before the situation turns into a bidding war

He’s predominately right footed ….
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Berge of three years ago, I’d jump at.
Berge of the last season or two, remains to be seen. He certainly hasn’t pulled up any trees recently.
He’s still a very good age so there’s a good chance, in the right team and right system, he could prove to be a very good signing.
If he can recover his form, he could prove to be a bargain.

Yes, he’s tall (not convinced he’s 6ft 5”) but I certainly wouldn’t be presuming he “can fill in as centre half”. He’s an excellent footballer. One of his key attributes I remember from his play is the underlapping runs he makes to get to the by-line and put a ball across from that inside right channel. He could be our KDB, if you like (obviously only relatively speaking).
Fingers crossed we can get this one done soon.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
You’ve got to think that Sheff Utd are trying to sell the club to new owners. In doing so, they may need to ‘fatten’ the coffers a bit to make it more attractive to any potential buyer. A bit like Garlick did with us. So they have to sell a couple of decent ones to sign four or five and leave the rest of the promotion/sky money alone.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I haven't seen the story but apparently it's known that he doesn't want to sign a new deal
His links with elite clubs date back 2/3 years - it appears he wants to stay in England/the PL. He has just spent two seasons in the Championship
Realistically there are probably only 5/6 clubs who might be interested - assuming they need someone in his position and they are looking to spend around £12M - which probably rules out say Everton and Wolves right now
West Ham maybe - but announcing him as the Declan Rice replacement might not go down so well
There's obviously concern that someone else might show some interest but you'd assume - based on what has been reported - we are in pole position as things stand

Mourinho seems to be at odds with the owners at Roma over their failure to replace Abraham who got an ACL injury in June
They have missed out on his preferred targets Morata and Scamacca so assume they are still in the market for a striker - not sure if there was any substance to the reported links with Weghorst last week

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Berge was a mismatch for Sheffield. He likes to play the ball on the deck, fast movement passing style. His neck was hurting watching balls flying over at Bramall lane. He was never really happy there, signed when they were mid table PL team and things soon went sour after he signed. I think he will flourish under Kompany, playing proper footy.

Haven't many of you watched him play?
He was one of the key players when SU were "running away with the league". He is a quality player. I am very happy with this deal, if we get him. He reminds me a little of Cork but with more goals in him. He's not really a defender, as such. but can put his foot in in the middle of the park.
This would be an excellent signing for us. I am full steam ahead on it and, even though he is a different sort of player, I'm more excited about Berge than I am about Ramsay.
Usual disclaimers, etc.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
A good season for Berge in a ball playing but weaker team (us) will increase his chances of a £20-30m move before he is 27 to a more elite club.
And if that doesn't work out then the deal sees him with a nice £10,000,000 contract and still only be 30 if he sees it through.
One way or another, he is more likely to spend longer in the Premier League with us than Sheffield United at the moment.
