City resorted to long ball. They (and Sam Allardyce/Sky Sports, etc,) can call it “sweeping passes/final third entries/long passes” all they want, but they resorted to long ball against Little Ol’ Burnley.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 9:41 amCity don’t play long ball, I think they’re called sweeping passes or some guff

What struck me last night was how slow Vitinho was. I’m not convinced he is any quicker than Charlie Taylor.

One of VK’s few weak points is his Vitinho blind spot. Really not sure how he still gets a gig.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I can understand why he's "teacher's pet". Not as bad as some of our fans think, can play in many different positions and can be used for many different roles. But I agree that he shouldn't start in the future.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 9:50 amOne of VK’s few weak points is his Vitinho blind spot. Really not sure how he still gets a gig.

I agree , it was a shame that that weakness in the team was so costly exposed. Never a regular at full back last season and won’t be this season , but great cameo player. Obviously new full back to be signed or loaned , particularly with CT not even in the squad. Would imagine he is on his way to dirty Leeds.warksclaret wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 9:41 amVitinho could have done a lot better with their first two goals. Appreciate that, but you will never convince me Vitinho can defend better than Taylor. If you see the goals again just look at their first two goals and the awareness of Vitinho as to whats going on and the effort he makes. It happens a lot with Vitinho. He was no better in the cup game v City in January. I think Taylor struggles in the way Vinnie sets us up but he is a good defender and quite experienced in the PL123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 9:46 amTaylor has been on the wrong side of 5 and 6 nil results against City before, nothing to say he would of made a difference

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I presume Vitinho only played wide left because he offers a versatile ability to get back and forward. Last night it was almost a hybrid between our usual 4231 on the ball and in the press, to a 523 in the defensive shape so Vitinho was the choice to give that versatility. I do think we might perhaps adjust like that depending on who we’re playing, and I wouldn’t expect us to start 3 centre backs and Vitinho wide against lesser opponents. I’d imagine the line up then may be a strong attacking 4231 with a new left back looking something like:Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 9:50 amOne of VK’s few weak points is his Vitinho blind spot. Last night there was one that said City's defence on the pitch cost more then the total Burnley had spent on defenders in their history.
The other stat I noted was that in the last 13 matches City vs Burnley we scored 1 goal, they got 42! I couldn't help laughing at that, particularly as I would have thought it was more like 60!!! Surely if they'd gone back to the days of Shaun Goater it would have been an enormous number.

Funny isn’t it. Foster started out wide last nightPickles wrote: ↑Sat Aug 05, 2023 6:05 pmI haven't said we're not unbalanced.
I'm saying we haven't stockpiled wingers. It's bizarre that someone like yourself, who clearly watches a lot of football, is considering Costelloe, Vitinho, Gudmundsson and Twine as consistent winger options in the Premier League. Because it's obvious Kompany won't. One of them played for Bradford City and the other three barely played as wingers last season in the league below.
Foster has been played as a striker all preseason and previous to coming to Burnley. Last season he didn't play as a winger in the same way as Zaroury and Benson did - which is what we're lacking.
Bruun Larsen is a winger but can play centrally and deeper and it isn't obvious where he'll play yet.
So - that leaves Redmond, Koleosho, Zaroury, an injured Benson and Amdouni who plays as a ten or off the striker and who isn't really a winger.
We haven't stockpiled wingers.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Well I never, Tiémoué Bakayoko, a foreign player I've actually heard of!
I saw the PSV vs Sturm Graz UEFA Champions League Qualifying game on TV recently and he was electric on the right wing. Doesn't of course mean he'd cut it in The Premier League.

Unless I’m mistaken - Tienoue is the 28 yr old ex-Chelsea player released after five years of loans and currently without a club
Johan Bakayoko is a 20 yr old Belgian winger at PSV

Why do you seem to have a total lack of being able to read what people write? You seem to do it quite often.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 12, 2023 10:54 amFunny isn’t it. Foster started out wide last night
Foster played on the left of a three quite often last night and he was very good. He absolutely was not a winger though, and wasn't playing anywhere close to the way Zaroury and Benson play/played - which is what our conversation covered whenever it was we had it.

Of course I've never seen Lukebakio play, but from the surface-level information available on him it does look as though VK is making a very deliberate effort to improve the height, pace, and physicality all over the park and this guy seems like he fits the brief.
Last night, although we continued to be somewhat disjointed, it was immediately obvious that we looked a much bigger and faster team.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Finally a winger with the ability to play 90 minutes at a high international level. Yes we have Benny Zaroury Koleosho Redmond and yes they are good players but after half an hour they are dead.
Lukebakio can start a game and you can rely on him. Hopefully we can get Bakayoko too who's an even bigger prospect. Lukebakio already has some experience from the Bundesliga. He can bring alot to the team.

So after Odobert, Ramsey and Lukebakio, surely we are a left back away from being finished in the window?
I know there’s been the Lokonga rumour but nothing in the press about that at all.

We need a Barnes / Weghorst replacement. Big man to hit balls to when tippy tappy isn't working.

I might be wrong but I don’t think we’ll see that. Just not enough space in the squad now (plus that kinda of player costs big £). Lukabakio can also play as a 9.

Odobert confirmed!
No experienced left back and only two decent central midfielders (Cullen and Berge) - Cork and Bastien will hardly feature if at all unless we are desperate
We then have Brownhill and Twine who I presume will be in competition with Amdouni
Then Foster appears as our only decent striker with the ageing Jay and the injured Obafemi
Are we recruiting based on covering actual positions on the pitch

Some clever link up play in that video. Clearly has an eye for goal and can go past defenders. A quick google indicates that he is about 6ft 1 too. Could be the big attacker we're missing. Would be very handy to have an extra big man to defend set pieces too.

There’ll be a few leaving, for sure. Maybe a couple of surprises too I reckon.
I don’t know how other posters don’t think we need another striker. Where was Jay last night? We had 5 wingers on the bench but not one striker. If Jay was fit, why wasn’t he on the bench? If he’s not fit then that also suggests we need another striker. Obafemi will be out for a while yet - we’d be screwed if Foster got an injury now.
We still have two domestic PL loans to use and we’ll definitely utilise those.

Watching Arsenal here they have Jesus and Nketiah for one spot with Havertz who can kinda play there. Why do we need 5 when they have 2/3?

I have a little list of possible omissions from the squad:
Taylor,
Churlinov,

Muric (yes, that's right)
then possibly Twine.
