Absolutely. Said on another thread on Friday night that some of us clocked last season how he'd been brought in for this season. He was head and shoulders our best player against City, looked really useful.

I can understand us accepting a buy back clause going in if that’s where the selling club have the option to buy a player back at a set price IF we decide to sell. I’m fine with that.
I’m less comfortable if they can buy him back at any time, regardless of whether we want to sell. Albeit possibly the only way we’d get him, but certainly feels like a glorified loan in that scenario.
Would maybe prefer we continue to develop Twine.
I agree. Either they want to sell or they don’t.
If we take him on and develop his career while suing his wages all the risk is with us

By my reckoning we now have 8/9 wide men in the squadTricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 2:33 pmMy only thought after seeing how many wingers we have signed, relatively cheap, is we are going to showcase them to increase value and some will be sold on for profit to be replaced by a new batch of young exciting players. Rinse and repeat.
This showcasing will in no way interfere with objective number 1, which is PL survival.
You can't "showcase" them all if we are going to maintain the stability we will need in our starting 11 during this season

Injuries, loss of form/struggling to adapt is one thing. I also think VK will play horses for courses against different opposition.

Squad number nerd alert. Maatsen had been 38 for Chelsea. He's moved down to 29, same number he wore for us.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Ringing the changes is part of the team ethos, look how many top City players only start 19-20 games a season. Players need a rest, which is why the man replacing them has to be just as good, just as versed in the system. Buying a winger is like putting your money on Black. If you buy 4 wingers and put all of your bets on black, some are going to pay off.
VK said you can't guarantee that every signing is going to be a success, again why we need to buy multiple players. I doubt VK knows yet what his best team is, although he's probably a lot closer to it than any of us. Everybody has got the chance to impress him, it's up to them to take it.
After Friday I can't wait to see us in 6 games time.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I suspect a few might be moved on and a few are very young and probably won’t feature so much this season. Anass, Benson, Bruun-Larsen and Redmond will probably be our top 4 to be rotated over the course of the season plus maybe another if we sign any more forwards. JBG’s game time will probably be limited and he may play more centrally or he may be moved on which could also be Twine’s fate. Players like Koleosho and Odobert are more likely to feature less this season even though Koleosho started against City. Amdouni will play more centrally I think either as a 9/10.
Wingers aside, I really hope we sign a left back along with whatever value we can get for any potential goal threats whether that be Tella, the Hertha lad or anyone else that VK might have in mind. Possibly another centre mid?
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Yes, agree. It will take time for this new team to get much like last season when we drew a lot of games first up. I just hope we haven’t lost too many after 10 games!Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 4:26 pmRinging the changes is part of the team ethos, look how many top City players only start 19-20 games a season. Admit he looked sharper but strikers are measured by scoring goals. Early arguments in his favour were some 'homesickness' maybe then the number of minutes he'd only played which soon turned to just a few games. A full pre- season was then seen as necessary for him. He had that, played a lot of games and still no goals. Hope the 'surprises' arrive soon.

The big difference between us and City though is they have the European games to juggle, and are likely to go further in the domestic cups.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 4:26 pmRinging the changes is part of the team ethos, look how many top City players only start 19-20 games a season. There is a bit of truth in your arguments we need to build resilience into the squad and that not ever player will come off. However, bluntly, its VK's job to make sure a good proportion do come off and we can't be scatter gun as a substitute for having confidence in good judgement.
I'm not saying that is what we are doing, and I'm all for layering up the squad. But I thought we had an odd bench on Friday with too many wide players and I'm not sure we can give all of them enough game time without it coming at the expense of cohesion in the way we play.
That is why it's right to get Twine out by the way. He needs to play abandoned he won't here this season, certainly not before Christmas.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I'd have agreed before Friday, but we showed Friday that we have lots of options in the forward department.
I like Twine, and think he will need to play regular after last seasons bit parts. Hopefully he'll get that at Hull, and come back a better player. He's still one for the future, hopefully he looks at it as an opportunity, and not a set back.

How many of VKs signings last season didn't come off though. None. People could argue Bastien, but we saw enough of him to see he is a very good player, he just wasn't good enough to play regularly for us.
Some of this windows might not come off, but in the same way they could be good players, just not quite up to our system, or good enough to displace better options.
The only thing odd about this window, is how few players have left, compared to incomings. In a shorter season it does seem like too many players, much like Twine could be left with not enough game time. However the loan window runs a week later than the transfer one, so I'm hoping we are lining up some good clubs for our players. McNally and Thomas did particularly well last. Showcasing some more at that level would bode well for the future.
We also need to have ready replacements when 'bigger' clubs start sniffing. If those replacements have been out on loan it's a win win.
P.S. could add Dervisoglu and Churlinov, but I think both carried injuries that hampered them.

Jack Harrison is another of the Leeds players with the loan clause in their contract. He's passed a medical at Everton but Villa have come in and he's going there instead.

Always liked Harrison - good signing.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
He was playing against some of the best players in the league I think he will start to shine when we play some of the lesser teams, hopefully fill his boots against Villa, also if he plays as Barnes did he’ll be laying it off to our multitude of winners to cut in and score a la Benson and Zaroury.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 13, 2023 5:10 pmAdmit he looked sharper but strikers are measured by scoring goals. If we've got a few plates spinning all at once, as has been suggested on numerous occasions for various positions, then surely getting a left back shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Think I’m the only one not seeing the Tella obsession.
17 league goals last season was it? Hat trick at hull take that off and it’s 14. That’s not like, amazing is it? Pretty average return for the side finishing 1st. In addition he was never fancied in the prem by Saints either.
Good in the championship as he is faster than everyone but in the prem most defenders are as quick as him and definitely stronger.
I feel it’s a mostly emotive argument based on our love for him, when there may well be better options out there more suited to the Prem.
Just some balance!
