It makes you wonder how Bobby Moore ended up as a world cup winning captain.

I dont need stats to tell me Ekdal is a tad slow. The same applied to Ben Mee. However if Ekdal is as good as Ben at reading a game , this will compensate. I don't think Ekdal would have got this far if he lacked both qualities

I've not seen a credible source for the Bobby Moore link.

Must have repeated myself countless time on here that Exdal is not slow, VK himself said that Ekbal was not fit when he got here due to their pre-season & got injured due to us having to use him before he was fit. Lets not get facts in the way of rumoursTaffy on the wing wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 6:01 pmI'm curious.........are there any statistics that prove Ekdal is slow? Have the signings ground to such a halt therefore we are now discussing whether Bobby Moore would be good enough in the modern game?
Was he any good at left back?

The point I was making was that pace isn't everything.
But I'm sure you knew what I meant.

If enough people say something enough times on this board it becomes accepted as true
I don’t think Ekdal is slow. I think he is a victim of this board.
In his early games I was impressed with his speed. Alongside Al Fakhil most centre halves may appear to be slow

On the premise the gullible & naive buy into it which is often the case admittedly you have a point, the old wise heads reserve judgement & when what initially appeared as true turns into a big steaming dollop of BS you can quietly afford yourself a chuckle secure in the knowledge only experience earns.Down_Rover wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 9:58 pmIf enough people say something enough times on this board it becomes accepted as true

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
On the one hand, there's the view that a centre half, to make a career in the OL, needs to be over 6 foot tall and noticeably fast. On the other hand, there's Ben Mee.
Obviously speed is an advantage, and all else being equal, a quick centre half is better than a slow centre half. But all else isn't equal, and the slower man can make the most of his other attributes to get by.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
My opinion on this is straight forward enough - Ekdal is a really good player; reads the game well, good in the air, comfortable in possession and wins his fair share of tackles. I would personally like to see more of him but in VK I absolutely trust!

Hope we get someone in early this week, this dissecting of our centre halves attributes is getting a bit dull.

12 days to go, ideally the squad would be finalised but we aren't too far away.

I certainly did - just being facetious.Juan Tanamera wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 9:27 pmThe point I was making was that pace isn't everything.

I also agree that pace isn’t everything but the meta in the Prem is definitely changing.
You could get away with just being a footballer a few years back - I think to succeed in the Prem now you have to be a top athlete as well, or be an absolutely phenomenal player (talking your David Silvas)
This isn’t to say that Ekdal is a snail btw

Part of Nixons sun article
A £12miilion deal for Aston Villa midfielder Aaron Ramsey, 20, is still possible.
But Villa want a complicated buy-back arrangement.
Their manager Unai Emery wants to keep tabs on the England Under-20 star this season - whether he moves or not.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
That sounds like it isn't happening then. We can't afford to be messed around by Villa. Time to move on.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Not sure if I'm over-reacting with this, I don't think I am, but I'd be pulling the plug on Ramsey now. We're not some glorified feeder club for Villa here. A buy-back option is fine and commonplace, but this feels like a £12m loan deal now.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
No doubt Ramsey is talented, but I’d like a bit of experience through the door now, ideally.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I saw links that we might be bidding for Ernest Nuamah but that Tottenham were also likely to bid as well as there being interest from several European teams. Then I saw reports that we might bid £25m. I also then saw a report that suggested Tottenham might go to £30m so I thought we would be seen off. Now there is a story that says Spurs are going in for Lukaku instead. Perhaps if we move quickly we might get something done.
There seems to be a number of issues going on with getting players in over the line and whilst a LB is desperately needed I'm not sure the Anderlecht guy is going to be enough. The Ramsay deal is looking more and more dubious, Lakonga looks like a dud deal, and I'm not sure what is happening with all the other linked players recently but unless there is something special happening soon its all getting a bit meh. The last 48 hours of the window could be a bit special or a complete washout.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think we are at the stage where agents are holding out to see what the best offer they can get for their players is which is why there's always a mad scramble towards the end of the window. I've no doubt we have a number of players lined up as possibles, just have to hope a couple of them come off in areas where we need them most.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Looks good prospect this lad but appears he's signing for Lyon.LaLigaClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 12:02 amI saw links that we might be bidding for Ernest Nuamah but that Tottenham were also likely to bid as well as there being interest from several European teams. Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
No rumours but a player I’d like to see in is Sinclair Armstrong, a 20yo Irish player at QPR.
Only seen brief highlights of their first 3 games but he has stood out in them. Pacy striker, big bodied and knows how to use it, good strike on him. He might not be PL level but has all the attributes to be coached into one. Shouldn’t be too expensive and could soar in value.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
You could Google. It's just silly to think successful football sides don't have quick centre halves, with athleticism and defensive high lines as prominent as they've ever been.

I would tell Villa to do one
They are asking for us to pay his wages and take on the responsibility of developing his career while they sit back and collect the fruits of our labours in due course
Unless he helps us win a trophy there is no upside to Burnley

He said Nuamah was going to PSG the other day. Then a bud from West Ham yesterday. Then I also saw some other journo say he was signing for Lyon.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 8:56 amLooks like if this is true it will smash our transfer record

I saw the same guy had done a link to West Ham, not sure if it is him linking the player to Spurs. Maybe he is on commission if the player gets a move to England

We will buy a striker and a LB before next week. Plus Ramsey.
I just wish we were still in for Lokonga.

Ramsey must just be a technicality from their end. I'm sure it's all fine.
I'm hoping the rumours of him training with us already are true.

Footy Insider (Peter O’Rourke) is clickbait in its purest form. No idea why anyone cites it.
