Fair to say if we are to sign anybody else other than tresor today then they need to already be playing in England, we don’t have time for someone to fly over for a medical now
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I think Milan backed out of the deal..
AC Milan have dropped their pursuit of Patson Daka due to their inability to get the deal done in time and are now closing in on another target, a report claims.
In the last hour we relayed a report from Sky claiming that Milan have reached an agreement with Leicester over the figures and formula of the operation with Daka over personal terms. Thus, a race against time to get the green light for a work permit began.
However, the latest twist from Sky is that the bureaucratic registration times will take too long to try and get Daka, so Milan have moved away from the Zambia international and on to another target.
The player in question is 26-year-old Sevilla striker Rafa Mir. The player has already given the green light to join the Rossoneri, now Milan will have to sort out the details with Sevilla and thus definitively close the operation.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
What is now crystal clear is that VK wanted both Maatsen and Tella.
If we end up with neither it's not because VK didn't think they were good enough for the PL/'moved on' or whatever other theories we've seen.

Some fair comments. Not sure you can class a window where we spent so much money as a disappointing one. However I do agree there are some pretty blinding gaps.LaLigaClaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 5:49 pmSo at the moment in this window we have recruited an overload of widemen of whom only so many can play at any one time, but still struggling to bring in a LB. We recruited a GK for £19m which wasn't a priority, still light on the CM that we needed and missed out on a number of players who it was claimed would be incoming or changed their mind at the last minute and of course didn't recruit our leading goalscorer Tella. Although we recruited Amdouni the strikers still look a bit on the light side. The Lokonga situation is also an insult, going to Luton. Given we spent so much money, much more than ever before I am not sure the recruitment has been as good as it should and could have been. Hopefully Tresor is finalised and Maatsen is convinced to come but all in all this last week has been a bit of a disappointment.
Genuinely quite concerning that we are one injury away from Al Dakhil and Delcroix being our starting full backs in the prem.
I’m sure if the players were available VK would have got them. Unfortunately they some times just don’t happen

You’d imagine the club would want the same person to do the medical who has done all the others at the club
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Maatsen wouldn't sign a contract at Chelsea but he wants to stay to challenge for a place. It doesn't make sense. Probably more to do with money.

Yeah, I was responding to Ric who said he needs his head checking for turning down Milan for Bournemouth
I think Milan turned him down (that article I quoted was from 5 hours ago)

I honestly think we're okay. Yeah a left back would have been good but kompany thinks different or it would have been soreted earlier. Just think we need to play 3 in the middle. A mid field of Cullen brownhill berge as a 3 sounds solid to me. Berge further forward

I still think Taylor can do a job at LB. Some of our best games/results in the premier league came from the Taylor McNeil partnership and we have similar if not better left wingers.

I always remember Stan Ternent bemoaning certain sections of Burnley fans, claiming even if they were top of the Premier League they'd be moaning.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 5:58 pmthere are deffo some people that would complain if we won the Premier League by 1 point that it wasn't 2
This was after they were complaining and booing at some of his substitutions (in a game we ended up winning too) despite us at the time being clear at the top of the Championship (division 1 back then)

Not sure why people are critical of this. It's a fair summary. We have bought players with potential, we don't yet know how many of the new ones are premier league players, time will tell.LaLigaClaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 5:49 pmSo at the moment in this window we have recruited an overload of widemen of whom only so many can play at any one time, but still struggling to bring in a LB. For my part the biggest concern is the lack of a captain. Cullen is not the man for the job. He lacks the organisational ability to react on the pitch. Good players don't necessarily make good captains.
I expect we will be under the cosh tomorrow, hopefully someone will step up.

Not sure if you went to Forest Wednesday, but I did and it was a sad reminder that Charlie, despite his loyalty to us , is just not in tune in what is required as a LB in this team.Very ponderous, lacking in ideas going forward, but must admit he can defend when we are under the cosh. If Maatsen does not join he may end up playing for us by elimination

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
We've 'overloaded' on wide attackers probably because attacking players are the ones who tend to become most profitable. Don't think of all our dealings as only preparing us for the next 36 games, think of the abundance of attacking signings as multiple items being placed on a conveyor belt. We've not only got the first choice's (whoever emerges as that) replacement ready and integrated for when the first choice goes, but we've also got the replacement's replacement ready, too. In particular with regards to Odobert and Koleosho, I'm absolutely convinced they were brought in with an eye on them being the natural replacements once Zaroury and Benny go, and I think Koleosho has only started because of some other options being limited (Benny's injury stalling his pre-season, Zaroury's red) and him doing well in pre-season, but he's still raw and can develop more.
So we've got Larsen and Redmond as reliable 'now signings' in the even of Zaroury and Benny not being available, but we can bed-in Koleosho and Odobert while we're at it. I think the so-called relative dearth of activity in other areas of the pitch such as fullback, CDM and the No9 position is only seen that way because activity has been so high in wide attacking areas of the pitch, but we've actually brought numbers in at CDM, CB, GK and up front, with a LB still to come in and another 'now' attacker in Tresor coming in. Some of the fees are insane by our standards, and I hope it all works out because we're in serious trouble if it doesn't, but insofar as squad composition is concerned if we get Maatsen and Tresor through the door I honestly think this has been an incredible window for us, probably our best ever, where we have at once been able to drastically improve the squad depth, notably improve the starting XI, and also put future players on the conveyor belt. Three-pronged transfer activity: XI, squad, and future, all improved, all in one window.

From a tactical point of few it completely changes the whole set up of the team though.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:09 pmWhich all might be true but whilst we have games against spurs, united, Newcastle and Chelsea surely having an actual left back who is a pretty good defender isn’t such a bad idea
Because he is pretty poor at distributing the ball and can’t use his right foot it means we have change personal to accommodate him.
I suspect if Taylor is starting games it will be as the third CB. Which will result in someone like JBG or Larsen having to play as a wing back

The first half against Villa, delcroix wasn’t playing as an inverted full back he was playing as a traditional left back and played simple passes to koleosho and Cullen but was caught out positioning, Taylor could of easily played that first half roleNewcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:11 pmFrom a tactical point of few it completely changes the whole set up of the team though.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
If Beyer, Ekdal and O'Shea were all injured at the same time, that's three first choice CBs all out, and I don't necessarily think that's an indictment of our transfer activity, because you look at any club in the world, take out three of their best central defenders, they also start to look like they've got a crisis too, in spite of otherwise perfect transfer activity. You could apply the same logic to the GK position. If both get injured at the same time, it doesn't mean we've under-invested in the position.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 5:58 pmGenuinely quite concerning that we are one injury away from Al Dakhil and Delcroix being our starting full backs in the prem.

I think the Championship/D1 window's open for another week, so no news is good news with regard to my particular fears (Benson/Cullen/Muric) as those, along with Charlie Taylor and Josh Brownhill are all that are likely to attract EPL attention; the rest we'll hear about next week, with the departures being in part dependent on who finally arrives.

We are right on the line at the moment between 'great window' and 'failed window' - no LB, no CM and no CF, no Maatsen, no THB and no Tella - with money unnecessarily thrown elsewhere.
But get Maatsen, Kalvin Phillips and a good centre-forward through the door in the next few hours and we will have had a cracking window.

Completely agree we need a new LB to play the system.
We might even need to now sign that American Cannon purely for squad depth in them areas
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
O'Shea can play RB. Probably not an inverted fullback, but he can play RB. O'Shea, Ameen, Delcroix, Taylor. I mean, it's not exactly as progressive as a team with Beyer and Roberts in it, but it's not exactly a disaster of a line-up either.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:17 pmI’m talking about left back and Roght back.

Which in our current system I'll concede is not Charlie Taylor's strong suit. Coversely, i think there will be as many, perhaps more matches where what we really need is a left back who can actually 'defend' and for me CT is streets ahead of Maatsen in that departmentNewcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:18 pm...I think a (ball-playing) LB is absolutely critical to our league finish this season

Whether or not you rate him is a different matter.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Again, we can hypothesise about three first choice defenders all being injured at once, but bar Man City alone probably, even if you look at a team like Chelsea or Liverpool or Barcelona, take three first team defenders out of the picture and their system is gonna be affected too. You can't adequately prepare for that, you can only manage it when it happens, regardless of who you are. Every club would love three players in every position, but you can only name 25, plus some young players on top if it.
