Are you looking at rumours from January?

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The club's transfer man, Matt Williams, was quoted as saying in hospitality last week, that we wanted Tella but couldn't get it done/wouldn't pay the asking price.Gazclaret83 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:57 pmIf he wanted tella kompany would have got him. Don't think kompany thought he was up to the prem for whatever reason. Maatsen different story. Possibly are best 2 players last season
No surprise, VK isn't daft and knew that Tella would have done a great job.
But its history now.

What's Les Thompson up to these days if we don't sign a LB

Exactly.warksclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 6:06 pmNot sure if you went to Forest Wednesday, but I did and it was a sad reminder that Charlie, despite his loyalty to us , is just not in tune in what is required as a LB in this team.Very ponderous, lacking in ideas going forward, but must admit he can defend when we are under the cosh. If Maatsen does not join he may end up playing for us by elimination

Lokonga has joined Luton. We must have pulled out of that one, surely. He’d been linked to bigger clubs than us too.

Lokonga was at palace on loan it could be the case that he just wants to remain down south (London area) maybe family or other ties although bedfordshire isn't exactly that but it's a damn sight closer than lancashire.Claret Alfie wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 7:12 pmLokonga has joined Luton. The guy who said we would only let Dodgson go if we sign Maatsen has changed his tune now
Burnley have prioritised ensuring Owen Dodgson gets Barnsley opportunity before waiting for Ian Maatsen green light
First team minutes unlikely even if Maatsen doesn’t sign
Highly rated by Vincent Kompany and seen part of future plans
See they where putting 2 and 2 together

There's been a lot of froth around re. potential incoming
but most, if not all of it has evaporated over the last few hours.
Pity really because some of names mentioned have got many of us
a tad too excited, myself included.
It looks as if we'll have to do with what we've managed to get in
but not many, if any of those we were keen on in particular
those who were with us last season - in particular Tella and Maatsen.
VK will put a brave face on it but he must be disappointed.

Could well be. I think I’m guilty like others that every Belgian player automatically would like to play for KompanyJakubclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 7:18 pmLokonga was at palace on loan it could be the case that he just wants to remain down south (London area) maybe family or other ties although bedfordshire isn't exactly that but it's a damn sight closer than lancashire.

Maybe the case. But kompany was chasing him for a while. Think I heard we pulled the plug on the deal rather than the player
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Didn't it break down over personal terms, I remember reading something about that?Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 7:18 pmLokonga was at palace on loan it could be the case that he just wants to remain down south (London area) maybe family or other ties although bedfordshire isn't exactly that but it's a damn sight closer than lancashire.
Anyway, I wonder how much of his wages Luton are covering.. I think he's on around £53k a week at Arsenal.
Although reading this, it seems Arsenal were desperate to get him out of the club.

Maybe it’s gone quiet because our signings are doing media duties ready to be unveiled tonight. Grasping I know but you never know!

Lokonga went to Luton as he had nowhere else to go after rejecting our offer earlier in the summer. It was Luton or his career was in the bin so just last minute desperation on his part. Pretty humilating for him and for us. Rejecting us over Luton, hope he turns out to be gash.

I'm not sure I think holding is on his way out as well it would appear arsenal are looking to offload, when/if lokonga ever plays for a northern club I'll maintain that theory until, I'm merely speculating on his possible desire to remain down south without being sure.Wembley09 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 7:22 pmDidn't it break down over personal terms, I remember reading something about that?

We got Ramsey instead,so no big deal here.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I just hope VK actually plays Taylor at LB now because as much as he doesn’t suit our style, he’s our best and only LB.
I don’t want to see Roberts, Al-Dakhil or Vitinho shunted out there trying their best to do a job when Taylor is available for selection.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. Thought we didn't want him in the end. But if he's turned us down hoping for a better offer haha

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
If Maatsen is unsure about joining us I hope it is the strings being put in place by Chelsea or personal reasons and not an arrogant I'm to good for Burnley attitude . If it is the latter then I don't really want him.

Any left back free agents out there to go with cannon as a free agent right back?
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
How can you even compare to SD's defence when it's two polar opposite systems? Imagine Pope, Taylor, Mee, Tarky and Lowton trying to play in VK's possession based, 'play it out from the back' system, rather than a low block. It would be utterly shambolic.

the guy literally went around and fed 5 families in Burnley on Christmas day last year. The last thing he is is too big for his boots or arrogant. If he thinks he can make it at Chelsea he would be mental to join Burnley, can't fault or criticize the lad for backing himself. The only criticism here would be pointed at us if we don't have a plan B

Truly bizarre, especially with the budget VK has been given...
There is absolutely no chance we stay up with this current set of defenders.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I read gushing reports of how much he admired VK and how much he wanted to play for us. Staff at Arsenal were convinced it was a done deal because he said he wanted to come here. Reports of his desire to come here came out before there was any talk of us being interested in him. The fact that he eventually chose Luton and rejected us having strung us out for weeks in the summer is humiliating. I mean Luton who finished miles behind us last season. At no point did I read or hear that we were pulling out of the deal. Many posters on here kept asking what was happening with his supposed signing and there was never any explanation as to why there was any delay. Comments were being made ton here that we should walk away because of his reluctance to sign. I don't know why we seemed to be waiting for him to sign for so long without withdrawing our offer. The hanging on for weeks seems to be a very similar situation for Maatsen, that is keep hanging on in the desperate hope it will happen but without any alternatives being a realistic oprtion. By the way aren't we still short a good passing, defensive CM. and looking likely not to get one ?Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2023 7:34 pmI'd love you to explain how it's humiliating in any way shape or form for us

I'm genuinely giving my head a wobble at that reasoning.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
If the Maatsen deal is loan with a buy obligation then it could be a case of Maatsen not being keen on signing for god knows how much, knowing that in the event of relegation next summer, having just spent god knows how much on him in June we'd probably be unlikely to let him move to a prem club that same window. This was my theory with the Coulibaly deal. Player doesn't want to be tied to the potential of Championship football, something that is more likely if the fee is paid next summer. There's less flexibility, little room for manoeuvre for the player. I think it makes a difference if the fee is paid now, because after a (hopefully decent) season in the prem, if we're relegated we'd probably be more willing to sell than if we'd just paid whatever fee a few weeks prior to any potential sale.
