I’m pretty sure there have been numerous talks between the club and Maatsen/his representatives. And I’m pretty certain that Maatsen will have suggested that he’s open to a move. But until the ink goes on the paper both parties are entitled to keep their options open and ultimately change their mind - as we did with Townsend.

As a PL team we can't even complete a loan deal for players based in our leagues when we need some positions to be strengthened. Pathetic really.

I’m going to go out on a limb here by suggesting that Massengo will quickly become a terrific signing for us. My reason for this is because a close friend of mine is a Bristol City season ticket holder who reckons this lad is class and was gutted to see him leave. I wouldn’t normally take these opinions too seriously, but he knows his stuff, attends every game, and he was very quick to identify Alex Scott as a serious talent a few years ago way before anyone else!

It goes without saying that there are no guarantees, but I would rather take his opinion over some journalist who watched him on YouTube.

I also think the squad is looking strong overall. No doubt I would like to have seen a left back signed but other than that I really don’t think we can complain considering what we have spent! We simply cannot afford to spend £15-20 million on Amdouni for example, only to then go and sign another forward!!! We may also still get Tresor over the line before close of play.

Therefore, we have got to get 100% behind these players and trust in Vincent and his coaching staff to get the best out of these boys! 17th and above will do very nicely this season and then watch this squad grow!

99.9% sure it is for PL clubs. EFL clubs can loan for a while longer, but not PL. I think the logic is that the EFL get the players the PL clubs can't fit in their named squad lists when the dust has all settles on the transfer window proper.

I think Massengo could be a regular feature in the short to medium term. He’s very highly rated and by all accounts was outstanding for Auxerre.

If he can tackle he's an upgrade to be honest. Our midfield was great with 70% possession, but as last Sunday showed, they need to get stuck in in the Prem.
I know the set up of only 2 in the middle left us light, but the players in there didn't have a tenth of McGinns commitment.

The solution has to be a release clause in the event of relegation that covers our costs but we don’t lose money, or a Weghorst-style loan arrangement. That could be the best compromise for all parties but at present it is all bluff and double bluff.

Hypothetically, if Chelsea insist on a sell-on clause, then any release clause would have to exceed the initial fee, otherwise, even if we manage to sell him to the penny for the same as we bought him, it's a deal we lose money on because of the sell-on fee payable to Chelsea. This might nudge any potential release clause higher than what Maatsen wants because he might think it too high, and he might want a lower release clause to give him more options. Again, this is all conjecture, but it highlights that it's a bit more complicated that simply saying Maatsen doesn't want to play for Burnley. He's legitimately got all the talent and potential he needs to break into the Dutch NT, so I can see why he, much like Wout, would want to insist on a level of flexibility.

Haven't written him off but not having expectations he will be the player we turn to keeping us in the PL. I repeat he has development potential for the future but not as a first team choice in the PL this season.

No, but it means he doesn’t walk away with a panel deciding the compo they are due next summer. Tie him down to a long deal and they can sell him if it doesn’t work out.

I think for clubs like City and Chelsea it's a case that their academy players are a good source of revenue more that it is that they actively need to sell to stay within FFP limits. Revenue for Maatsen gives them more spending power. A long term contract gives them the potential to profit firther down the line, or maybe he becomes good enough for them, in which case you've avoided having to spend to sign anyone. But the last thing they want is to lose players to a tribunal fee. If nothing is sorted by January Chelsea will be moving haven and earth to get sold, but by basically doing nothing this window, it changes nothing for Chelsea at this moment.

He's considered under 21 so wouldn't need to be named in the 25 man squad. Only option left is for Poch to tell him he's not part of his plans, but then if Chilwell is injured it means Cucurella is the other option, and Poch would be mad to put all his eggs in the Cucurella basket, so keeping Maatsen in the fold makes sense. Shunning him out would just be done out of spite. That's not good business, and would make him less inclined to sign an extension, which is their preference.
