I think the transfer window was the easy bit, blending all these signings into a happy cohesive squad and team will be a lot tougher.

Maybe you should tell VK that because I can't see anyone else coming in. Charlie might yet get a chance.

If we’ve spent £120 million, mostly on wingers, and still want that clown I’ll shoot myself…

I said in another thread the 25 man squad lists are due for release anytime now and they are final till January unless you sign free agents, so if we have spaces in the squad then we may well be looking at a free agent

When was the last time we signed a free agent after the transfer window closed out of interest? Doesn’t seem like an option we’ve utilised very often in the past.

Good question - can't have been many. When did Joey Barton sign? (the first time) He was definitely a free agent but can't remember if it was just before the window closed or just after

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Looking at our 15 new signings, I've come up with the following team which should hold its own in the PL
Trafford
O Shea Beyer Delcroix
Odbert Redmond Berge Ramsey Koleosho
Tresor Amdouni
There can't be many other teams in any division that have signed a complete team !

Nice. But full backs would mean this team would lose most games.Nonayforever wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 8:48 pmLooking at our 15 new signings, I've come up with the following team which should hold its own in the PL

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Looking at the above team it is stark and scary that we have signed (excluding Beyer) 1 goalkeeper, 2 defenders, 1 deep midfielder and 6 attack minded players. That is despite losing 2 loan defenders.
Using that logic it seems certain the defence is worse than it was last season, with O’Shea and Delcroix in for Maatsen and THB. The law of sod means injuries were inevitable to compound that problem.
I’ll revise my assessment of the window to being 9/10 in the forward positions and 1/10 in the defending positions.

That has been rather the point (although I think O'Shea may be an upgrade on THB, and of course we purchased to centre backs in January as a down payment on our summer's business).CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:10 pmLooking at the above team it is stark and scary that we have signed (excluding Beyer) 1 goalkeeper, 2 defenders, 1 deep midfielder and 6 attack minded players. But I'm pretty sure Vinnie would have signed Maatsen if he could. Looks like he waited too long on that one.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Very harsh considering we achieved what was arguably the number one defensive objective of getting Beyer signed up permanently - often forgot about, but we got it done quickly and for pretty big money. O’Shea, jury still out, but it’s been a tough baptism of fire and he’s widely considered a solid enough pro. Harwood-Bellis had no PL offers and is back in Championship. Left back is the obvious issue but we obviously had Maatsen assurances which didn’t happen.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:10 pmLooking at the above team it is stark and scary that we have signed (excluding Beyer) 1 goalkeeper, 2 defenders, 1 deep midfielder and 6 attack minded players. Agree, a bit harsh, and I note claretspice’s point about the work done in January. I also hope Massengo is the answer who wasn’t in the above “team”, not much money but is 22 and has hopefully matured enough to handle this level.Swizzlestick wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 11:17 pmVery harsh considering we achieved what was arguably the number one defensive objective of getting Beyer signed up permanently - often forgot about, but we got it done quickly and for pretty big money. Left back is obviously the major problem and the real reason for my defensive pessimism. I don’t see any reason why we didn’t sign one before what Matt Williams was alluding to, Chelsea only having rung us up late on.
I sense though our biggest problem is tactical so hopefully this debate over personnel and the need for free agents is moot.

O'Shea's positioning has been awful, and his distribution is light years from THB.claretspice wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:37 pmThat has been rather the point (although I think O'Shea may be an upgrade on THB, and of course we purchased to centre backs in January as a down payment on our summer's business).

With all the international call ups doesn't seem we'll have that long to iron out the defensive issues before the next match.

I think the Matt Williams reference to looking at players who are unattached is just something to appease the worriers regarding a left back etc can’t see it materialising to much

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
2 weeks of Taylor being at the training ground, surely they can figure out he’s the best option at left back.
Taylor Beyer al-dakhil/O’Shea as a back 3 until Ekdal is fit and then have either roberts or Vitinho as your inverted full back next to Cullen. Brownhill and berge/Ramsey in front then front 3 of tresor foster and Amdouni

According to Matt Williams Chelsea only made him available on the last day of the window. Also mentions we went in for other LBs but couldn’t agree deals on them either.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 9:54 pmNot a massive shift in quality.

Tough one to take but just appears to have been a problem position to recruit this window, not for want of trying. Probably not helped by a late change of heart from Vinny’s #1 target.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Chelsea will be gutted Maatsen didn't come to us as they'd have claimed max profit since he's a Cobham graduate. FFP encourages teams to sell home grown products which doesn't feel right. Chelsea have done it often. Man City with Palmer the other way too.

Would of been interesting to see if West Ham came in for Maatsen at the same time as us if he still decided to stay at Chelsea

I see Matt Lowton is a free agent still. I wonder if he could play at Left Back?

Disappointed he hasn't manage to find a club. He was an amazing signing for us. The Huddersfield loan just didn't work out for him and put him in the shop window as I'm sure was his hope, and it's been downhill from there.
It's crazy how they played a career long RB at LB. Take note Vinny!
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
I'm disappointed for him too, but you never know if his legs have "gone" or not. I remember watching Ward play for Stoke after he left us and couldn't quite believe he was the same player. I haven't really seen anything of Lowton since he's left us but seems strange that he hasn't found a club.FeedTheArf wrote: ↑Tue Sep 05, 2023 5:01 pmDisappointed he hasn't manage to find a club. Dalbert looks a decent available freebie signing at left back. Ex Inter who paid big money for him. Had a serious knee injury a year or so ago so could be a risk.
