What car and which refrigerant does it use? I’d be surprised if it’s using R1234yf on a 2017 car.

Is it on 1234yf gas ?
£50 is plenty for a top up if it is someone you know. You might get to around double that price using somewhere like Halfords or Kwik fit

Re: AIR con re-gas
If it was recharged last year and needs doing again then you have a leak. Common problems are a leaking condenser or ‘O’ rings which seal the pipe work. A proper recharge involves recovering whatever refrigerant might be left in the system and vacuum testing it for leaks.
It will say on a plaque under your bonnet which refrigerant type it uses and the volume, but if it’s a bigger car and if it uses R1234yf then £150 would be about right, but as I said, you have a leak somewhere.

Re: AIR con re-gas
You're meant to get it done every year.
The newer, more environmentally friendly, gas is a lot more money and £150 sounds about right.
The gas loses its potency over the course of 12mths, hence why it's usually an annual thing to do.
You can usually find good deals on over the winter

Re: AIR con re-gas
If it’s lost enough refrigerant to stop working over the course of 12 months, then it’s got a leak somewhere, however small that might be.

Re: AIR con re-gas
I had a leak with my last car, it was such a slight crack in the tank that the machine didn’t pick it up and the garage said I just needed a refill.
When the gas ran out a few days later it was obvious they were wrong.

Really?! I've got an old Honda Jazz (2006) that has never been re-gassed and it still gets cold enough to ice the windscreen!

Mine turned out to be a leak, on a VW Passat. They changed the seals, it still leaked so they changed the compressor and it still leaked - the new compressor turned out to be faulty so they fitted a third one which worked. That was 6 weeks of hell last summer in the heatwave.

Never regassed in how long?

Don’t be tempted to get it done at Halfrauds. They charge as much as everyone else, but only do half a job.

Yep, fair enough.
I can't help but think that "air con" is aptly named.

Re: AIR con re-gas
I had an issue a few years ago and if I remember rightly it needed a radiator specialist to sort out. Wasn’t expensive.
Re: AIR con re-gas
2 months from the end of my last lease, my aircon totally failed... couldn't be bothered to re-gas for a few weeks... but that coincided with the 42° day that we had mid-July... on a day I was delivering chocolate to clients.

Re: AIR con re-gas
Is regassing based on age? Or age/usage? I've only ever used it a handful of times in the 3 years I've had mine so never thought of having it done (it's 3.5 years old)
Re: AIR con re-gas
It’s good practice to keep your air con on all year round as it helps keeps the system fresher, lubricated (and thus sealed) and stops the compressor from seizing up. The difference in fuel consumption with it on or off is negligible, too.
FWIW, although it’s recommended to get your air con serviced every 24 months, if it’s operated regularly it should last for a lot longer than that without intervention.

Me and my wife are 50, been driving over 30 years apiece, probably had cars with A/C for 20 years.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 5:31 pmYes.

I had to regass my car last year, the only one in at least 40 years of A/C ,driving between us.
Maybe they don't make things like they used/ should do?

Re: AIR con re-gas
There's quite a bit of misinformation or disinformation on this thread. All cooling systems, be it your car, home, commercial or kitchen refrigerator work in more or less the same way. The refrigerant is constantly changing from liquid to gas and vice versa, depending on pressure. If your car needs a recharge due to low refrigerant level, there IS a leak somewhere. It's a sealed system and should last the life of the car. Mobile A/C systems are particularly susceptible to leakage from hose/pipe connections due to the constant vibrations. There are other reasons for an Inoperative A/C such as electrical or electronic failure.
Re: AIR con re-gas
I completely agree that if has been re-gassed 12 months ago, and now needs redoing, you have a leak.
When they are re-gassed, the garage must do a system check for leaks, otherwise they are potentially polluting the atmosphere.
This is done by firstly emptying the system of gas and then doing a vacuum test, to check the integrity of the system.
Having said all this, I had my previous car checked and re-gassed. The following summer it was rubbish again.
Slow leaks are hard to detect by doing the vacuum test as they are only for around 15 minutes. Obviously a slow leak won't be detected in such a short time.
As for where to go, try Brookside garage in Trawden, great lads and very reasonable.

Re: AIR con re-gas
Well, it'll be 16 years since I've owned it from new. Still gets as cold as the day I bought it so why would I pay to have it regassed? As per others in the thread, I've never had a single car I've owned regassed over many years of ownership. Not sure where you have got advice it needs doing every 12 months.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 5:31 pmYes.

Re: AIR con re-gas
Only ever had 1 car needed a re-gas. Hyundai i30 that was re-gassed and it lasted 2 months. Took it to dealer (in last 3 months of warranty) and turns out it was the condenser had a leak and needed replacing. Never needed doing again after that.
As mentioned previously, mine is always on to keep the system and seals lubricated so they don't fail.
If you've got a good local garage, would be worth them checking the condenser and seals out before getting another re-gas
