JG once described the Turf as looking like "something out of Lorna Doone"
Looking forward to seeing these old episodes.

If we can just find out Greavsie's opinion of Scottish goalkeepers, we can finally square the circle.

Maybe someone will take notice about how entertaining a footy show can be and commission a new show?
Tony Hayers perhaps?

Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
Any new show commissioned would have to show diversity and be politically correct and so wouldn’t be anything similar to Saint and Greavsie. One of them would have to be female for a start.
Sky have decommissioned a group of 5 middle aged white men who used to discuss football on a Saturday afternoon and those types of shows are now destined for the archives.

Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
Greavesie, back in the early 60s, said the difference between Spurs and Burnley was their reserve strength. This was at the time we won back to back Central Leagues. Me Da was foaming at the mouth.
Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
JG actually said that when Spurs used to arrive into Burnley on the coach via Manchester Road, the town used to loom out of the chimney smoke and fog like Brigadoon. Always had a soft spot for Burnley did Jimmy.ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 9:10 pmJG once described the Turf as looking like "something out of Lorna Doone"

Will look out for this rerun and a bit o/t but what a shame the modern world is banging on about Haaland breaking the record when post-war Greavsie got more. It is disrespecting the dead.
Even that pales into insignificance compared to Dixie Dean with his 60 goals, someone who tragically dropped dead watching a mersey derby at Goodison and whose record of 60 goals needs to be respected.

Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
That’s a brilliant clip and allowed me to listen to my old friend George Bray. George used to tell me that we’d get back to the top flight one day but I don’t think I ever believed him. I just wish he’d lived long enough to witness it.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 8:30 amhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ympSdf2pglw

Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
I just looked at one on YouTube. It was better then I remember (I didn't see many because I was going to matches) with Greaves making mildly amusing little quips now and then. It looks quite ad lib. The main point was that it was a bit different from what we were used to at the time.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 10:07 pmI'm not sure these reruns will stand the test of time.
We'll see.
I often enjoy the interviews from the 70s/80s on the Big Match etc. repeats, especially with likes of Malcolm Allison and Ron Atkinson. They seem quite relaxed and honest and less of today's media savvy stuff.
Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
Of course it was. A place where a visiting team can only win once in a hundred years!
I think Jimmy G described the coach coming over the hills and down into Burnley, amongst all the chimneys. The weather was different - always raining and misty. Suddenly, the mist would clear and there was Turf Moor.
Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
I watched a few the other month on youtube and there's one where Ian actually says that he has a soft spot for Burnley.
I'll try find it.

On the one occasion I met him in 1986 when he and Saint came to Supporters’ Club Dinner, he spoke so warmly about our club and that was in a private conversation rather than speaking at the dinner.

It started in 1985 when St John was 47 and Greaves 45. It ran for seven years.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 12:17 pmWhat sort of age were they when they did the show? Hard to tell from the photo

Love the youtu.be clip. I think Greaves was confusing mist with smog.
I don't doubt that StJohn had a soft spot for Burnley, in '68 and '69 he came with Liverpool sides that buttered us st Turf Moor. I still have nightmares about Peter Thompson giving our defenders twisted blood.

Peter Thompson ran Jim Thomson ragged. I think it was Thomson's debut, but maybe not.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 12:46 pmLove the youtu.be clip. I think Greaves was confusing mist with smog.

It was Jim’s debut. We played him at right back. We lost 4-0, made changes and won the next eight.

Anyone remember when Greavsie was ill, so Peter Brackley stood in for him as his spitting image puppet?

Quite nice at my age to still be able to see things like this and be able to say I'm too young to remember this. Doesn't happen so often nowadays in a year where we appointed the first Burnley Manager to be younger than me.

Thanks for that clip brilliant! So funny seeing Jimmy as a puppeteer puppet! Brings back great memories.

In a way you are correct, as a stand alone show it did start in 1985 but Saint & Greavsie were on World of Sport in a segment called 'On the Ball' much earlier than 1985.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Sat Jun 03, 2023 9:26 amI'd never have got that right if it was a quiz question. I have a VHS full of clips from the 82/83 season and the attached clip shows the build up to the FA Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday in 1983.

Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
Fantastic, really enjoyed that, brings back memories and got me in the mood for the Cup Final better than the rubbish served up nowadays like Football Focus in recent years.
The access they get to training grounds and to athletes like Mike Tyson was far better than nowadays, and the players were happy to join in the gags.
Incredible that Greavsie in this is much younger than I am now but he don’t look it bless him (until he did those exercises at Watford)

Really enjoyable. Not sure when the next one is on.
Re: Saint & Greavsie back this summer
I thought it was stilted and no-one seemed comfortable. Frankly, pretty awful.
