Seasons champagne moment

Post by Vintage Claret » Sat May 13, 2023 1:07 pm

Season 2022/23 had so many great moments but if you had to pick just one to receive a virtual bottle of champagne what would it be?

Benson's winner at Ewood is an obvious one but for me I'd give it to Barnes for that headed goal and 'accidental' follow through planting of the goalkeeper into the back of the net.

Winning the title at Boll-Ewood ... and those 4 Bensons left foot rockets 😁

But yeah Barnes planting the keeper in the onion bag has to be right up there

Absolutely this.
A goal that will go down in the annals of Clarets history.
Pretty outrageous at the time, but who cares?

Pretty sure everyone’s champagne moment will be winning the title at Ewood. But honourable mentions for the late late comeback against Rotherham, and the game that sticks in the mind was the only game I didn’t watch - the comeback at Sunderland which pretty much ruined my day out for 2 hours but ended up making my day!

Missing the point tbh riley😊those are occasions not moments.

I'm in the Barnes v Bstards camp, with the Muric nutmeg in second place.

Maybe not a champagne moment, but the performance at Huddersfield the first game of the season will always stick in my mind.

To get a team to function like that after a few weeks working with them was brilliant, and a sign of things to come.

This was when the champagne was put on ice. I had just watched us lose to Watford whilst on holiday and entered into a conversation with CTID on this Twitter thread. We decided to save it for a rainy day.

Barnes header........as I witnessed it. The noise of the stadium and Barnes' emotion. That is why we love football.

Maybe if I could have filled one of those thousands of empty seats...Benson's winner would probably have it.

So many moments in what has been an unforgettable season.

Too many to choose from. One that hasn't been mentioned:

JBG scoring the free kick and running over to Vinny and jumping into his arms. Just said so much about the team and the manager.

The first half at Huddersfield.

I was sat at home with the lad watching on sky, we turned to each other in complete disbelief, in pure excitement at what we were watching.

Has to be them lot at home. We utterly destroyed them. It revitalised barnes, meant we were top before the world Cup break, was the start of our winning run that set us up for the title, was the first Derby experience for a lot of the new squad and manager, was our biggest win against them since the 60's, was a great way to come back against our worst league defeat of the season, barnes shoving the keeper into the net and then referring to them lot by their Christian name, it was a lovely sunny day in November.
For so many reasons it was my champagne moment. Winning the league at deadwood was the cherry on the cake.

Barnes shoving their keeper over and Tella giving it the three fingers.

To all of the above I'd like to add, the 5th goal away at Wigan.

The complete annihilation of a team in the same division, away from home, convinced me we were really going places.

Thought about this a lot the last week or so, and still giggle at that outrageous nutmeg.
But top champagne mo, out of numerous candidates in an outstanding season has to go to Barnsey putting the ball and keeper into the net.
It'll be up there with the real iconic moments in years to come, like the late, great Ralphy sitting on the ball at their place.

That keeper needs to be thankful it wasn't Andy Lochhead that did it. :D

That nutmeg from Muric- insane.

I was feeling uneasy watching him being closed down and then that happens, just shook my head, couldn't believe what I'd seen. Even had to ask my mate 'cos I thought my eyes were deceiving me.

Barnes getting the 3rd at home to Blackburn, proper took the p**s there with the build up.

It was great walking back up Tod Road after too.. we’ve beaten them loads recently but that was the real thrashing we’d waited for. Car horns blaring, everyone bouncing around, sun shining, even police having a laugh when they came in the pub after.

Don’t think this gets mentioned enough. 100% intentional, 100% genius, 100% taking the p***. The fact in then resulted in our third against Rovers then makes it something special.

Has to be Barnes putting the keeper in the net after bullet-heading that sublime cross from Zaroury but I think maybe if I could have been in the away end at Ewood Benson’s beautiful, beautiful strike might have edged it. Sitting on my hands in the JW stand (I was in hospitality) was not the best way to be able to celebrate such an incredible moment.
Twine’s fantastic free kick to beat WBA at home was maybe the moment when even I ….a terrible, anxious pessimist….. thought “we are def going up this season”
