Re: Least favourite Burnley players
The thread title can only be read as which Burnley players did you not like.
For me that equates to which Burnley player did I think never gave everything for the club when on the field. Completely different from those players who gave everything but just weren't good enough.
That narrows it down a great deal for me.
Paul Stewart immediately springs to mind and I think the reason was that he was physically and mentally gone by the time he put a claret shirt on. Terrible signing by whoever was the manager.
Naming any other player is difficult

Re: Least favourite Burnley players
I'll do this in order of them being at the club from my time watching (and this is least favourite, not worst) since 1992:
Tony Philliskirk
Lee Howey
Michael Williams
Mark McGregor
Neil Wood
Wayne Thomas
Gabor Kiraly
Steve Jones
Mark Randall
Leon Cort
Lee Grant
Cameron Stewart
Joe Hart
Wout Weghorst
Some of them were shite, some of them were more than good enough but didn't perform for Burnley, some of them just were not to my specific tastes... There is no logic to one's 'liking' of a player is there? Whenever anyone signs you're excited to see what they offer and hope for the best. Bizarre really.
Wayne Thomas though. What a load of shite he was.

Can’t believe I forgot Stephens. He’s definitely in my team. I’ll swap him for Van Der Shaaf who can drop to the bench.

Not keen on the concept of this thread, but I find it beyond belief that anyone would mention the late Ray Deakin, who may not have been the greatest footballer, (compared to our current crop),but captained the side during a difficult period when we almost went out of business, and ultimately led us to victory in the Orient game.
He was also our Captain at Wembley in 1988.

Not including loans, I think there is only one Burnley player who I can honestly say, for reasons I find hard to explain, that I just could not take to.

Not only that, but to identify Len Kinsella.....one of the most committed Clarets of recent times. Len was at the Turf for some seven seasons as No.11 behind the the likes of Ralph Coates and and Ian Towers but always gave 100% whenever he was called upon......Totally out of order.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 6:06 pmNot keen on the concept of this thread, but I find it beyond belief that anyone would mention the late Ray Deakin, who may not have been the greatest footballer, (compared to our current crop),but captained the side during a difficult period when we almost went out of business, and ultimately led us to victory in the Orient game.

Sorry, DC, they all represented Burnley......and that's all that matters.
But it's the identification of the likes of Len Kinsella and Ray Deakin, the most most committed of all players, that particularly wrankles......there really is no need.

So by your reasoning United fans should like Greenwood and Sunderland fans like Adam Johnson just because they played for their club?Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 7:17 pmSorry, DC, they all represented Burnley......and that's all that matters.

Everyone is allowed an opinion on players whether it be a perceived lack of commitment or they met them and the player acted like a bell end.
I tried to avoid listing players for not being "good enough" and there are several deemed in that category that I actually warmed to and liked such as Liam Robinson.

Re: Least favourite Burnley players
I don’t think I could dislike a player because they weren’t much good. And perhaps dislike is a bit strong but I have always been intrigued by Lee Dixon and Ian Wright. Both quite likeable as pundits but when it comes to Burnley I sense a sort of denial that they were ever here. I know neither were here very long but I’ve never felt they had any fondness for the club. Perhaps it’s an Arsenal thing or perhaps I’ve got it totally wrong?
Re: Least favourite Burnley players
They did, Roy and that of course has merit.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 7:17 pmSorry, DC, they all represented Burnley......and that's all that matters.

I appreciate what you are saying about Kinsella (before my time) and Deakin (a very limited player during our darkest days) but this isn’t a thread to simply label poor players, it’s about ones that for whatever reason, you couldn’t take to.
You have every right to back both examples but that doesn’t mean that someone else may not have a very different perspective.
Just as we might have our favourite players, we will each have ones that for one reason or another, we are less keen on or can’t take to (and I’m sure that you must have as well )
Appreciating the positives also means accepting that there are negatives and there’s nothing wrong with discussing either. Just because player a has represented our club (something that we would all give our right arm to do) it doesn’t mean we have to love and appreciate every one of them.
I can appreciate what Ian Moore did for us but I could never take to him as a player. Kyle Lafferty is another - I just didn’t like the way he came across on the field and I like him even less the more I read about how he’s conducted himself throughout his career.
The Paul Stewart one was a good example perhaps, but when you later read about what he had been through, my views on him have softened.

He's the first one that sprang to mind for me.
He just never seemed like a professional footballer... In any way. He had an awkwardness to him. He was crap basically.
I was probably early/mid twenties at the time and remember watching him and thinking if I got back in shape and started playing again there might have been an outside bet of picking up a professional contract myself.. you know... if he could play at championship/premier league level there's hope for us all.

Tbh it’s been well documented later that our tactic was we told him not to get back onside if he was already off, in fact, go deeper off, because that was where the free kick would be taken from. Not his fault.steve1264b wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2023 4:07 pmThere many reasons why a player might fall out of favour.
However, there can only be one. His transfer summed up the sorry state we were in at the time.
His loan signing in feb 1987 from Hibs where as forward he had 14 appearances with no goals, allowed him to get eight appearances with no goals for us.
He was without doubt, by a country mile, the most unfit footballer ive ever seen. He could not even run back to get onside.
His signing was a complete mystery to me and his appearance at Stockport County was shocking.
Ladies and gentlemen i give you Mark Caughey!
