Is Justin Connolly the son of former Walton High School deputy head John Connolly? I was in the same year as his son, Jonathan Connolly and sure he had a younger brother.

Excellent feature on shirt sponsorship. I knew it was grubby but that is very grim. The ‘money talks’ argument has a lot of credibility, even with me, but this is not a deal I am remotely proud of my club for getting tied into. Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
I enjoyed the bit on the shirt sponsorship and the murkier details of it.
I felt it was all a bit naive on the "why are our American owners failing to get a giant American sponsor" chat though. It's not as if other clubs aren't owned by American owners with significantly more clout and also don't get sponsors like coca cola.

I think Coca Cola was a suggestion but Wrexham - for instance - have been able to pull in United Airlines for their shirt.
I know most will point to the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney effect but I’m sure the JJ Watt factor (he’s just signed a multi-year - and I imagine multi-million dollar - deal with CBS) would also be very attractive to big US companies if we decided to try fishing in those pools/had the deal makers to get those deals signed off.

How many times do they say “we’re not accountants” in this episode? Then proceed to talk like they are. That aside I do find it a good listen.

I’ve given up after this episode. Have given it a good few goes but can’t be doing with the negative agenda driven stuff.

When every other phrase is "you know" it makes it an awfully difficult listen.
The transfer chat was decent but turned it off soon after.

Good listen again, but surprised how easy some pretty seasoned journos thought plucking a lucrative US sponsor would be.
JJ Watt and Vincent Kompany or not, we’re still Burnley. Nobody is offering us close to what the overseas gambling companies are willing to stump up.

I am still surprised that ALK Capital hasn't been more effective commercially though. Then again, they don't really have a background in that kind of thing, their track record is more in money markets.

Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
Each to their own but a third of the podcast was dicussions of transfer options - nothing negative or agenda driven about that. The next section was an interview with a French expert on Asian betting companies which was focused on facts about W88. There was then a discussion about the moral issues of the deal - with some contributors saying that well, its the big money, its hard to turn down. Then there was a brief chat about safe standing which was evaluating how it might work at the Turf and how it might improve the atmosphere.
I am genuinely baffled how that could be perceived as "negative" or "agenda-driven".

Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
Thanks. It will be more regular once the season starts. There will also be much more focus on the on-field action and debates about games once the football is back under way.
It is inevitable during the off-season that many of the talking points are related to off-the-field issues - like kits, sponsors, loans etc but while we aren't going to stop asking questions, when needed, about the club's ownership, the football will be more central when the games begin.

If we have a decent season playing good stuff and still struggle to attract investment then yes, I think that assessment will be valid. But up to now I can see why it’s been a struggle.

The lack of success commercially has cost a few jobs. The entire commercial team there at the takeover have all gone as have a number of those brought in to replace them.RicardoMontalban wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 10:28 amCan’t help but think relegation played a massive part in that, and the less than aesthetically appealing playing style prior to said relegation.

No idea but they brought in one bloke to head the department who was then removed and replaced by someone from Celtic called Gordon Kaye. He went too and not of his own accord I’m told.
More difficult to track all the staff changes now. They’ve removed the staff list from the official site.

Re: Brilliant New Burnley Podcast
I’ve been a critic but this was a great episode. The only thing I would say is on the muric debate and to be fair a few of the guys on the podcast made this point. Muric did nothing wrong last season, however the PL is a different ball game and muric’s qualities on the ball counts for nothing if his shot stopping ability is below par which I believe it is for the PL. it’s harsh, and ruthless by VK but I think he is making the right decision here.
